If Mexicans looked like Swedish people

Would the conversation on illegal immigration be different?

by Anonymousreply 84September 19, 2024 4:07 AM

If they spoke Spanish with a Minnesota accent (as seen on Los Espookys) it would comfort many of our frightened fragile white folk.

by Anonymousreply 1September 12, 2024 1:12 AM

Absolutely.

by Anonymousreply 2September 12, 2024 1:14 AM

100% yes

by Anonymousreply 3September 12, 2024 1:19 AM

I've commented on this before, and at the risk of being a bore, a guy by us was a PhD in Chemistry, had a very successful company, charming, witty, generous, and was the toast of the town. An all-around Really Good Joe.

The teensy-tiny problem was that he was an ex- German SS officer who absolutely was not supposed to be allowed in the country (he had a talent for keeping certain trains on schedule). I don't think he was part of 'Paperclip' because he did his own thing, not some government research.

by Anonymousreply 4September 12, 2024 1:21 AM

Err…

by Anonymousreply 5September 12, 2024 1:24 AM

Yes it absolutely would OP.

You're posting in the wrong thread or have misunderstood OP's post R4. Bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 6September 12, 2024 1:34 AM

Mexicans belong here. They're natives to the continent. Swedes? Not so much.

by Anonymousreply 7September 12, 2024 1:36 AM

The US is less than 60% white. Some people (like OP) seem to think it's 100%.

by Anonymousreply 10September 12, 2024 1:45 AM

Question is moot. White southerners dislike the looks of white strangers from another town. The Swiss famously distrust anyone around them, especially their neighbors. Xenophobia is about “the other” - not looks

R11, in the U.S. it goes beyond that. Racism is a defining fact of our history.

by Anonymousreply 14September 12, 2024 1:53 AM

R11 tell me that you’re American without saying that you’re American. Sweden and Switzerland are two separate countries.

by Anonymousreply 15September 12, 2024 1:55 AM

Like most other countries.

by Anonymousreply 16September 12, 2024 1:55 AM

R15 Duh. The poster was talking about the Swiss in a different context.

by Anonymousreply 17September 12, 2024 1:56 AM

R6 - Um, no. It has everything to do with it. Nordic-looking guy with money get's a pass even though he has an incredibly sketchy background.

by Anonymousreply 18September 12, 2024 2:00 AM

“Duh” yourself R17 - the poster is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 19September 12, 2024 2:00 AM

It really wouldn't - it's not what they look like. The issue is being the default country for immigration for a lot of Central American, Carribbean and South American countries.

Most of the migrants are not coming with money and education. The US - just like Europe - is not a release valve to send all the impoverished people to.

Just like in Europe, there are 'preferred' countries to land - even among those fleeing war-torn countries. That's more of a sign of migrating for economic conditions than actually fleeing violence.

If Sweden was a border country with so many economic problems and people with limited resources and education - and they were coming in all the time, there would be the same issue.

And for me, it's more of a housing and economic issue. We have a housing SHORTAGE - rents are too high, wages have been suppressed - how are more people coming in going to handle that without significant outlays from the government?

Canada is in the same boat - their housing is CRAZYTOWN with severe shortages and outrageous prices, yet they want millions and millions to keep coming in?

What about Americans and Canadians who just want some affordable housing? I'm sorry - but immigration only helps the upper 1% in keeping labor costs down and to create issues to get more people to vote for Conservatives.

The first world cannot absorb everyone from the developing world. Many of the undocumented immigrants come with very low levels of education and skills. I also think that we should not give citizenship to children whose parents aren’t here legally.

The US long ago stopped legal immigration avenues for white Europeans so I’m not so sure that it would be any different. They would still be othered. A highly educated white European can marry a US citizen and that’s about it. The other options would be short term visas with non immigrant intent, the green card lottery. Maybe having millions of dollars or becoming a movie star so avail of investment or “the Melanie Einstein” visa

If we really wanted immigrants with education and skill we’d have welcomed Europeans again.

The dirty secret is that we need low skill and no skill workers. We have 2 options. 1) Embrace Sanders/AOC policies so that American citizens can work low skilled jobs for a liveable wage, with rights and protections. 2) Immigrants. Right now we have millions of smug cunts (from both parties) who use unskilled labor dozens of times each day - cleaner, barista, cashier, cook, janitor, assistant, server, driver, delivery, warehouse picker, baggage handler, farm worker, factory worker, slaughterer, nursing home staff and on and on. If these jobs didn’t exist “let them all learn to code and no breeding until they earn 6 figures” then life as you know it would not exist. Some schmuck has to work in a slaughter house so that we can have a restaurant every 20 ft and so that we can have a $2 breakfast sandwich. Do you want to work in a slaughterhouse or a warehouse or a factory or fast food? No. How about your child, niece, godchild? Hell no! They’re going to a good school and they will get high paid jobs that (as the pandemic showed) are not really necessary or important. So it won’t be you. It won’t be yours. It won’t be immigrants…….who? Flyover people for $9 an hour?

by Anonymousreply 42September 12, 2024 8:46 AM

R42 depending on whether you consider Australians as “European” - a lot of the population are of European descent - the USA created this visa classification for Australians in recognition of Australia’s support in the war on terror.

Anybody who meets the criteria, which are fairly easy to meet, can apply which is why there are so many Australians in the USA for a country of only 25 million.

I think that hostility toward immigrants has to do with economic power. For example, nobody would ever think about expressing hostility toward a Saudi or Emirati prince, even though the Arabian peninsula's elites have played an extremely important role in the spreading of Islamic fundamentalism. On the other hand, the taxi driver who looks the same and speaks with the same accent, but has a limited purchasing power and will compete with the local working classes for housing and limited services, is reviled as a potential terrorist and subjected to xenophobic abuse. This is because privilege is a powerful weapon for those who have it, and a terrible weakness for those who lack it. Also, elites will always band together to protect their status and wealth regardless of their origins, beliefs and background, to everybody else's detriment.

The real issue is that mass immigration is caused by corporate imperialism, which destroys countries and then, imports legions of desperate people to the first world to exploit them as cheap labour, not to mention that the human traffickers who bring them here launder their ill-gotten gains through our financial system and by investing in the business sector - thus, the problem we face is one of commodifying human beings as goods from which profit can be extracted at all levels. Politically, immigrants are also being used as electoral fodder and as a weapon that political parties use against each other, not to mention that when the economy destabilizes, politicians are quick to blame this on immigration. Many people have the information to understand these things, but they prefer to allow themselves to be seduced by simple answers because, let's face it, the majority of us are cowardly and we're afraid of the consequences of confronting those who have power. After all, there is a reason why revolutions take place when the corruption and excesses of the upper classes have gone so far, that life is completely unbearable for the vast majority of the population.

I am not too thrilled about mass immigration, but we must be reasonable and understand that if we keep allowing our governments to steal their wealth and prevent their countries of origin from developing, so that a tiny minority in our own homelands can profit immensely from their desperation and poverty, they are going to continue arriving because we all want, and have a right to survive. Equally, I agree with the posters who have said that the Poles and the Irish have been treated appallingly even though many of them are blond and blue-eyed, and we have recent proof of this in the UK. Once again, poverty and competing for access to deliberately underfunded services are the real issues, rather than overt racism (which also exists, of course).

Still, it would be interesting to also note that Mexican people like to endlessly whine about being stereotyped and mistreated in the US, but then turn around and speak disparagingly about Central, South American and Caribbean immigrants, and treat them awfully. Just read the link below. As always, being a destination country is very different from being an exporter of cheap labour, and many Third World countries are neither capable nor willing to make provisions to absorb immigrants from even poorer regions. So before we whine endlessly about how evil European, North American and Australian people are, we should remember that those who claim victimhood are less than compassionate whenever they're in a position that allows them to become victimizers.

The Irish were arguably the most hated immigrant group in American history, and they couldn't have been any whiter.

by Anonymousreply 51September 12, 2024 1:32 PM

R45 It is a nonimmigrant visa that does not tolerate immigrant intent. An applicant must be prepared to demonstrate their intention to return to Australia at the end of their visa. It was never extended to the EU. They tried to extend it to Ireland only but it did not pass the Senate. Aussies get 10,000 visas per year but they have never used all of them. They only use 3 or 4,000 of them each year. Their own country pays skilled professionals very well so it's too far to go for a visa that doesn't have dual intent. If those were H1B visas they'd be in high demand.

by Anonymousreply 52September 12, 2024 2:22 PM

Cinco de Mayo is actually a holiday celebrating Mexico winning a battle against a [italic]French[/italic] invasion.

So I used to ask my students (many of whom were Puerto Rican), "Do you think Americans would like Mexicans better if they spoke French?"

Still an interesting question.

by Anonymousreply 53September 12, 2024 2:40 PM

I think the real prejudice is because they are short, and possibly tinymeated.

by Anonymousreply 54September 12, 2024 3:07 PM

I think Americans object to the mistaken sense of entitlement on the part of some migrants in believing they have a right to settle in this country simply because they want to or because dismal quality of life elsewhere compels them.

by Anonymousreply 63September 12, 2024 6:41 PM

You don't know racism until you've gone to Latin America. Americans are always beating themselves up because they think they invented racism but let me tell you - Latinos are the worst. The white Latinos of pure European Spanish blood are the most racist motherfuckers you will ever meet.

by Anonymousreply 65September 12, 2024 7:10 PM

The sweet summer children of this thread think the Mexicans (of all people) are open to migrants in their country:

"On Sunday, anti-caravan protesters chanted: “Out Hondurans, we don’t want you here”, “Tijuana first” and “Long live Mexico”, and waved Mexican flags and signs reading “no to the invasion” and “no more migrants”."

You should ask the Mexicans: would they be protesting if those migrants looked like Swedish people?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 66September 12, 2024 8:20 PM

And I've previously said R66, there is A LOT of hypocrisy in Mexico when it comes to migration, and the same people who complain about discrimination and racism in the US, will turn around and react with extreme hostility toward other non-Caucasian immigrants in Mexico, with the Haitians and central Americans being the target of much vitriol nowadays.

And to reply to your question: no, Mexicans wouldn't mind it if the immigrants were Swedish. In fact, they would be delighted due to the racial values and perceptions of people in Latin America in general. And just as we point out Eurocentric discrimination against other peoples, it's important that we remember that there are HUGE problems with racism, ethnic hatred and envy among non-Caucasians. Go to India, Latin America or China as a black person and you'll see how they treat you. Go to the Middle East as a Philippine, Indian or Latin American person and you'll se how they react. Go to Sub-Saharian Africa as a non-Caucasian person, and they won't be nice at all... Unfortunately, prejudice exists everywhere and in the West we've convinced ourselves that white people bear the entire responsibility for it.

Reasonable common sense immigration laws is what the Democrats have been trying to pass for years, but Republicans sabotage every such bill so it can remain a wedge issue in culture wars and elections.

by Anonymousreply 73September 12, 2024 9:58 PM

During WWII, German Wehrmacht POWs were shipped to the United States to work on farms and plantations, mostly down South. When the natives got a good look at the POWs as they were being paraded through their towns, they saw these guys looked just like them.

This white southern trash treated the enemy POWs better than they did the black American soldiers who were fighting in Europe to protect white people's freedom.

So yes, if only Mexicans were blond and blue eyed.....
