by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 8, 2024 11:08 PM |
Between the drugs scandal, the boring tennis and the dull personality, I fear Sinner's reign at the top of tennis may result in very poor ratings and lower than ever interest.

Sinner is bad for tennis. The only thing he has going for him is his interesting last name.
With an Italian at #1 you'd at least expect the guy to be hot and with some charisma. But Sinner has the looks and personality of a table cloth.

Better to have the bland leading the bland in a Major final instead of the ignominy of Novaxx or RFC.
Looking forward to how the rest of the year pans out with the 1000 titles to be defended by Hubie (Shanghai) and Novaxx (Paris) and 500s by Jannik (Beijing and Vienna), Shelton (Tokyo), and Felix (Basel). Novaxx may not even be eligible to defend his ATP Finals title since he's currently #9 in the Live ATP race and is unlikely to defend Paris. Only Sinner, RFC and Carlitos are locked in for Nitto so far.

Laugh all you want at Carla Suarez Navarro R31, but Carla is a beautiful person inside and out, who probably overachieved in her profession (if you consider her diminutive size and antiquated technique), always audibly supported the LGBT community and had the courage to come out while still playing actively (while many these days still wait for retirement to step out of their closet); she's also a cancer survivor, a daughter, a sister, and the mother of two adorable daughters (Ona and Noa) and according to her wife, Olga, no one can munch carpet through a chain link fence like she does.

Back in 1989 I was at a Women's Tennis Event in D.C. working as a volunteer. I essentially just refilled the water cups for the players on the court.
Martina Navratilova was playing that event, and though I had never been sexually attracted to her before, I have to say that in person, she is mesmerizing. Kind of like Nancy Kulp meets Kiki Dee. Anyway, I was filling up Pam Shriver's water when she asked me if I could run into the locker room and get her Movado watch that was lying on a towel on a bench next to her locker. So I ran in there, feeling a little bit funny in my downtown lips at the opportunity to see "backstage" of the Women's tennis tour. And let me tell you right now, it didn't disappoint, as I walked in there was Chris Evert doing lunges in the buff. The only thing I can say is that it looked like she was hiding a bear cub down there. I was just about to suggest that she take some Nair to her whisker biscuit when out of the shower she came. Yes Martina Navratilova!! Wow, I had never felt so funny down in my grey clam in my life. She had a great rack, maybe a 34 C but the best was her porkchop sandwich. She had trimmed it ever so fine and it was actually in the pattern of a rooster!
Martina could tell I was checking out her goods, and she winked at me and pulled at a little string hanging from her nice piece of hair pie. She then said to me, "Do you want to earn your red wings?". Not knowing exactly what she meant but willing to do anything to be closer to this icon I nodded in agreement.
Well, the next thing you know I found out exactly what she meant, Martina's girl was bleeding like the Serenghetti and my face was slopping it up like Hattie McDaniel at an all you can eat jumbo fried shrimp buffet. I earned my red wings all right, the sides of my mouth to my cheeks were crimson with her rotted girl eggs.
Wow Martina!

by Anonymous | reply 248 | October 4, 2024 11:22 PM |
R247 Yeah, I've been on the TME bandwagon since his run to the quarter finals at Roland Garros a few years ago.
He has a big heart - reminds me somewhat of Juan Martin Del Potro. I do wish he would develop his game a bit more - it's a little one note: heavy bashing cross court, with occasional serve-volleying. I get the feeling that most of the top players have him sussed now. He needs to develop some variety if he's going to step up to top 20 level.

Muchova’s ranking reflects her injury problems.
She’s really been injury-prone. If she could start a year healthy and stay that way, she’d easily be top ten if not top five.
She could easily win a major, but she needs enough such play to be ready.

Sinner defeats evil.
While not as exciting as Rafa/Fed or even Pete/Andre, Sinner/Carlos is the obvious heir apparent to great tennis rivalries. I assume he's going to get suspended, which will most likely kill that rivalry's momentum.
(And also means Novak will surely vulture even more slams.)
by Anonymous | reply 351 | October 13, 2024 6:43 PM |
I wish I knew what to think about the Sinner doping situation.
Coach’s Cahill has an outstanding reputation for integrity, though Simona got caught shortly after working with him (which I suspect was because of Morataglou).
And it’s not Sinner’s fault that his case was kept quiet while it was decided.
But the medication his physio used is clearly marked as doping, and there’s been a rash of Italian athletes who have “inadvertently been exposed.
There’s a little smoke.
by Anonymous | reply 352 | October 13, 2024 7:28 PM |
I don't know. Even without Sinner I get the impression that Novak's starting to lose the stamina to last the 7 consecutive matches it would take to win a slam. Even with the long lay offs he's taken between tournaments this year - apart from the Olympics - he's not been convincing. I think there are too many young up-and-comers that don't have the same fear of him that plague the Zverev, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Fritz generation.
Maybe he has one more in him. I wouldn't rule it out if the stars align.
by Anonymous | reply 353 | October 13, 2024 7:28 PM |
I think Novak will win at least another.
Remember, he suffered that knee injury this summer. That surely has limited his fitness work.
I suspect he is between a rock and a hard place because he would benefit by shutting down the season and taking time to prepare for Australia. But I suspect he doesn’t feel he can afford the loss of ranking points, which would affect when he would meet up with the two top players.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | October 13, 2024 7:35 PM |
R353, I don't think Novak is going to dominated anymore, but without Sinner there's a great chance he wins one or two slams just because Carlos is inconsistent and, really, no one else can beat Novak when he's on. Even with his decline.
I also don't think he cheated. I could be wrong, but I think his physio just didn't realize that the ointment could be "transferred" in the way in which it was. I think he thought what he was doing was harmless by not wearing gloves. Again, I could totally be wrong.

by Anonymous | reply 359 | October 14, 2024 2:36 AM |
R359, he may not. I think now that Rafa has announced his retirement Djokovic is done. He's in good physical shape and can still defeat most players. He can always stroll to a final if he's half-way motivated. But his willingness to concentrate on understanding and breaking down a player of Sinner's quality isn't there anymore.

Taylor Fritz had the same knee surgery last year and came back just as quickly.
Yea, I actually believe that.

Because Djokovic and his camp have invariably been consistently credible historians.
by Anonymous | reply 364 | October 14, 2024 8:08 PM |
Novak called players like Fritz to have long conversations about their experiences with the surgery.
Sorry, but all that subterfuge is too deep for me to believe it was a lie.
Lots of tinfoil hats on this site.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | October 14, 2024 8:19 PM |
Interesting that only Novaxx wears the knee wrap but I don't see Fritz wearing it. I also didn't like Novaxx's act, calling for physio during his match with Fritz. Even the announcers were trying to figure out when Novaxx could have hurt his non-surgeried leg. He just started stretching it and then physio came out. Miraculously, he was 'cured' and went on to beat Fritz.

What fucking hypocrites who slam Novak and annoit the known cheater Sinner. The excuses for Sinner's failed test don't pass, and thank God it's been appealed. He should own up and accept the suspension. Darren Cahill - you need to answer some q's as well.

In the first of the day's semis:
YELLton tops Fils in Basel - I've really tried to be more open to Shelton but I just can't stand stand to watch him - the constant bellowing and that face he pulls. Euch.
Big Jack D beats down Lorenzo: 6-2, 6-4 - but the match was closer than the score suggests - lots of long deuce games. Musetti broke back in both sets but seemed to collapse whenever he got back on even terms. Jack now up to 15 in the live ATP rankings (started the season at 62).

Just back from a very disappointing night at Bercy. Pornstache seemed overmatched, even though he went up 6-5 in the second before Humbert took a really suspiciously timed medical timeout. (Between that, his annoying grunt that starts AFTER his shot has crossed the net and the fact that he has rodent-like features, I nominate Ugo for RFC#2.)
The second match was a total dud. Did the commentators say anything about NSYG being sick? He was listless throughout.

Ugo gets intense and fired up on court, particularly in front of the home crowd, but nothing in his general attitude is like Zverev. Off court he's very mild-mannered and nerdy.
Obviously, we all like or dislike players for our own reasons, I just think a comparison to someone with as an obnoxious, sometimes aggressive attitude as Zverev is way overblown.

I like it. So Zverev has a good chance to finally win a ATP 1000.
He is the player, who played the most tournaments this year. So he deserves to win Paris.

Zverev deserves prison!

r539. What for?
by Anonymous | reply 542 | November 2, 2024 9:08 PM |
Humbert shows his piano skills and easy-going demeanor off court.
Zverev clearly has a violent temper and got off easy in Acapulco with a slap on the wrist when he should have been suspended for quite a while. The ATP has a double standard when it comes to the top players, same as with Il G's failed drug tests causing barely a ripple.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | November 2, 2024 9:16 PM |
RFC and the UGOAT have split their previous matches, and each was tight.
Should be a good match.

Why is Paolini in a black folding chair when the others have those cool basket things?
Anyway, Rybakina looks fabulous! And I'd give second place to Zheng, if this were a beauty contest.

What did Karen say to Ugo at the net? He mouthed off at Humbert after the loss. Its not Humbert 's fault that your body failed you Karen....
by Anonymous | reply 549 | November 3, 2024 2:23 AM |
Why r537 is Humbert evil?
by Anonymous | reply 550 | November 3, 2024 2:26 AM |
r550, I think the reference is to my finding Ugo to be annoying/shady when I saw him play against Thompson. I suggested he could be RFC#2. (He's got the mug for it.) The " " suggestion is I'm making mountains out of molehills. Still don't like him. ;)

Okay, so far qualified for the ATP Finals: Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev, Medvedev and Fritz.

Strategically smart, Coco lost in straights to Bar-Bore Uh, so Iga is eliminated as a semi finalist.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | November 8, 2024 3:18 PM |
Which meant she has to play the top seed in the semi and not the number 7….no, she did not lose intentionally.
by Anonymous | reply 563 | November 8, 2024 4:49 PM |
I think she has a winning record against Sabs, so she may still get revenge on Barbora if she reaches the final. I truly believe she wanted to get Iga out of the way.

Another feel-good result at the end of the season: doe-eyed Frenchie, Benjamin Bonzi - who was out for an age with a wrist injury, just when he was getting momentum - wins his first main tour ATP title in Metz. Beats another player coming back to form, Cam Norrie.

by Anonymous | reply 579 | November 9, 2024 7:17 PM |
Qinwen's problem is she always tries to be Venus when she could be Capriati. Gauff was playing like shit both times when Qinwen was serving for the match. Would've won the third 6-3 if she had a little patience but nope, had to hit herself off the court when she didn't need to be the aggressive one.

Zheng with the perfunctory, no-look handshake.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | November 9, 2024 7:20 PM |
R581 I wouldn't be able to smile either after that match. Coco was solid but ultimately Qinwen lost to her own impatience at the end.

Sinner is more ruddy/pinkish.
