Are Podcasters Tim Pool and Dave Rubin Actual Russian Assets?
U.S. says Russia funded media company that paid right-wing influencers millions for videos
[quote] Two Russian nationals working for a news network controlled by Vladimir Putin's government funneled millions of dollars to an American media company that paid right-wing influencers for videos pushing narratives favorable to the Kremlin, U.S. prosecutors alleged on Wednesday.
[quote] Federal prosecutors said RT (Russia Today) oversaw a series of "covert projects" that included funneling $10 million through a series of shell entities to a Tennessee-based company launched in 2023 that publishes videos on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and X, formerly known as Twitter.
[quote] Though the company is not named in the indictment, prosecutors said that it describes itself as a "network of heterodox commentators that focus on Western political and cultural issues" and features six commentators as its "talent." Tenet Media describes itself using the same phrase on its website, and other details in the indictment align with the firm. Its website lists six right-wing personalities, including Dave Rubin, who has more than 2.4 million YouTube subscribers; Tim Pool, a podcast host with more than 1.3 million YouTube followers; and Benny Johnson, whose YouTube channel has nearly 2.4 million subscribers.

Tim Pool's response:
[quote] Pool wrote on social media, "Should these allegations prove true, I as well as the other personalities and commentators were deceived and are victims. I cannot speak for anyone else at the company as to what they do or to what they are instructed." He said his podcast was licensed by Tenet Media and existed before the license agreement. Pool also said he had full editorial control of the show and its contents, which he said are "often apolitical."

Tim Pool just announced that he is contemplating suing the Kamala Harris campaign for posting one of his videos that seems to indicate that he wants certain Democrats rounded up, imprisoned, or executed if Trump is elected. Maybe he believes it was edited or taken out of context? Not sure.
The Harris campaign's actual post:
[quote] Trump operatives [Tim Pool] say their Project 2025 plan is to give Trump total, unchecked legal power so they can jail and execute those who don’t support Trump if he wins. (They have since scrubbed this video from YouTube)

I remember casually watching Dave Rubin years and years ago. I was very into the Sam Harris/Chris Hitchens/Richard Dawkins intellectual scene in the late 00s, early 10s. Dave Rubin was an offshoot of that. (Or that's how I found him anyway.) But I quickly realized his idiocy was ocean sized and he did not belong in the same universe as Hitchens, let alone the same sentence.

Yeah, Dave Rubin seems to be purely on the take. He started at The Young Turks as a leftist, but apparently wanted his own show with a huge paycheck. They turned him down, so he decided he was a libertarian instead and quickly realized the grifting is better on the Right, just cause you can always find rich wingnuts over there. And obviously, very interested foreign governments willing to shell out large amounts of money for even a semi-competent propagandist.
Pool seems more insane actually. Yeah, he loves the huge payoff, but shrieking that Ukraine is America's biggest enemy in the world is a level of "commitment" that seems at least partly driven by insanity.

"Project Good Old USA":
[quote]In late August 2023, Ilya Gambashidze was in a conference room at the office of Social Design Agency, a Russian IT company he founded that is based in Moscow, close to the world-renowned Moscow Conservatory. Gambashidze was relatively unknown in Russian politics at the time, but just a month earlier his name had appeared on a Council of the European Union’s list of Russian nationals subjected to sanctions for playing a central role in a sprawling disinformation campaign against Ukraine.
[quote]In the conference room, Gambashidze was laying out his plans for a new target: Along with his colleagues, he began drafting what would become known as the Good Old USA Project. The project was supposed to influence the outcome of the US presidential election in favor of former president Donald Trump, specifically targeting certain minorities, swing-state residents, and online gamers, among others, in a scheme that included a full-time team dedicated to the cause.
[quote]On Wednesday, Gambashidze and his company were named by the US Department of Justice among the architects of a disinformation campaign known as Doppelganger that has for the past two years been targeting Ukraine and, more recently, US elections. The Doppelganger campaign uses AI-generated content on dozens of fake websites designed to impersonate mainstream media outlets such as The Washington Post and Fox Business, using a network of fake social media accounts to disseminate pro-Russian narratives targeting audiences across the globe. Doppelganger is a Kremlin-aligned disinformation campaign that was first linked to the Kremlin in 2023 by the French government.

The worry is how many other Tim Pool's are on Russia' payroll? Slowly chipping away at people's belief in our system?
Also, you might not have heard of him, but I have. And so have hundreds of thousands of other people.
You might also have never heard of Dave Rubin. But I have. And so have hundreds of other people.

It’s telling that so many (most?) of the prominent figures on the “new right” landscape are failed screenwriters, comedians and actors - and that they tend to be either breathtakingly stupid - like Dave Rubin, Tim Pool and Benny Johnson - or have fairly obvious personality disorders - like Candace Owens, Stephen Crowder and Rod Dreher.

Part of what Russia does is financially back and platform people who are already on their "side". Or near enough to it. They don't necessarily tell the "influencer" what to say. Though they might do that too. But they give the influencer a bigger microphone.
Tim Pool got paid 100k an episode to sound the lunatic he already was. But amped up.
And with a bigger platform? That means more followers. More followers means more acolytes. More acolytes means more incels thinking they have a "voice". They then use that voice, telling their idiot online friends about how cool Tim Pool is and to fuck Ukraine, fuck the West, fuck democracy.
One of those friends tells your weird cousin this exact thing in some Reddit thread. And pretty soon your weird cousin, who was always strange but generally harmless, is now ranting and raving about how Putin is misunderstood, fuck Biden, fuck Harris, all while proclaiming Trump is the only true leader.
Rinse and repeat.

I like what Kim Iversen has to say. If you’re going to go after influencers for secretly taking money from Russia, you should be going after anybody secretly taking money from Israel or Qatar.
But, if what the indictment says about Lauren Chen is true, what she did was very wrong. Influencers are constantly being accused of being paid Russian asssets. So when it turns out that that’s the case with Lauren Chen, that makes everyone else look suspicious, even if they’re innocent.

R134: I always wondered why Rod Dreher merited THREE extensive profiles in The New Yorker over a period of several years.
I know a Dutch journalist who interviewed him in Budapest for a current-affairs weekly. My acquaintance said that when Dreher first relocated to Budapest, he would occasionally move his "office" to one of the local "Scruton Cafés" (named after the conservative British philosopher). He said it was ironic that people in those cafés like to rant against globalization and take pride in Budapest being "like the rest of Europe was a century ago" while the background music, oat milk chai lattes, pulled pork sandwiches, ambience, furnishings, and magazines on display are as generic and "globalized" as can be,

He's a gamergate guy through and through. These channels are huge - there are so fucking many of them and they are all making TONs of money with hundreds of thousands or million plus subscribers. TheQuartering has 1.7M subscribers for example and is a morbidly obese retard who says the same thing every day. Actually, looking at TheQuarterpounder's channel now it's more explicitly political than usual - but for years this was all about how video games and comic books and your favorite nerdy hobby is under attack. He's a guy who became an anti-woke youtuber after getting banned from Magic The Gathering tournaments for harassing people and creeping out women.
