What happened to them? A victim of Covid?
I can't seem to find Golden Delicious Apples anymore

My Safeway app tells me they're in stock here in Portland, $1.99/lb.
Not sure how useful that is to you, tho'. Worth the trip?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 4, 2024 5:26 AM |
In stock in my area. Are you making a pie?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 4, 2024 5:52 AM |
Oh my god, shopping at a Safeway in Portland on purpose
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 4, 2024 6:01 AM |
Well, how do you shit now without them apples, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 4, 2024 6:13 AM |
Fuji apples finally showed up at the grocery store in my city. Only took 3 years.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 4, 2024 6:33 AM |
It might be a little early for a large enough crop to be sent to some areas.
But did you look in the area where they have apples already pre-packed in a bag, rather than the area where you pick and choose your own apples?
I was looking for the seasonal SweeTango apples last year and couldn't find them. I was told they were only going to be sold in bags where I was. In that case, I think it was a 3-lb bag, and I couldn't possibly eat the number that were in the bag, so went without.

Safeway is a low-tier grocer in Portland, but a few of their locations are decent enough, R3. Let's be honest, though, once the Kroger-Albertsons merger goes through (and it will), our local Safeways will go the way of the Golden Delicious.

Golden Delicious Apples are a late season variety and don't import very well. Wait two weeks - mid September
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 4, 2024 12:00 PM |
They'll show up here in DC in a few weeks - lots of apple orchards over in Virginia, so tons will be here soon
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 4, 2024 12:03 PM |
Apples in a bag? What fresh hell is this?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 4, 2024 12:12 PM |
The orchard down the street from me has a bumper crop of them (and all their other varieties). They'll be available around the last week in September.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 4, 2024 12:21 PM |
They are a softer apple than others, and so bruises/blemishes appear more readily than other apple varieties. Because of this, they do not ship quite as well as others so stores are more reliant on local purveyors.
Red Delicious, Fuji and the like are firmer and can even be shipped from overseas and still look good on the shelves.

Honeycrisp and Fuji etc seem to have crowded them out year round, for reasons R12 describes , but they’ll be around this next 6-8 weeks.
Our local store keeps offering newfangled apple varieties with no clue as to what they might taste like. Nope I’m not going to buy Wizzala or Fantango or whatever the name I’ve never heard of at $2.49/lb.

Has FEMA intervened?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 4, 2024 1:20 PM |
They taste horrible and often have a mushy texture.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 4, 2024 7:18 PM |
R15 The "Delicious" part is false advertising.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 4, 2024 10:07 PM |
they getting less sweet, even the fuji apples.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 4, 2024 10:09 PM |
Yellow Delicious are supposed to be good for baking. I really dont like the Red Delicious. I like Honeycrisp,
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 4, 2024 10:27 PM |
I've had trouble finding them also, OP. I also haven't been able to get tangerines in my market in years. And no one in the produce department seems to know why.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 4, 2024 10:42 PM |
I took love Goldens OP. I looked pretty hard at the varieties available this summer and found any other kind I like with similar sweetness. Their called "Pink Ladies". Think Gala/Fuji but sweeter.
Don't know what availability is in your area but they're available at my Kroger equivalent.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 4, 2024 11:13 PM |
Pies deserve a mix of Granny Smith and another apple.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 4, 2024 11:16 PM |
Ewww mealy apples are the worst. Considering when you get single apples at the store sometimes they get expensive.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 5, 2024 12:41 AM |
There is no better slicing apple than a Golden Delicious and so freaking tasty. Yum!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 5, 2024 12:45 AM |
I like crispins, which are a cross between golden delicious and an indo apple. They're halfway between sweet and tart, very juicy and extra crisp. I don't know if they're available in most stores, though, I get them from orchard markets.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 5, 2024 12:46 AM |
I didn't think anyone actually ate Golden Delicious. Aren't they used more for holiday centerpieces and mantel swags?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 5, 2024 12:56 AM |
I love Golden Delicious.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 5, 2024 1:26 AM |
OP, how long have you been unable to seem?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 5, 2024 2:03 AM |
[quote]Safeway is a low-tier grocer in Portland
What is your mid or high tier R7?
Safeway is very middle of the road in most of the country.
If your answer is Whole Foods or Erewhon, then ask Muriel to delete your post out of shame.

Red Delicious are disgusting. My favorites are McIntosh apples from Michigan—they are beautiful, flavorful and are everything you’d want from a table apple.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 5, 2024 2:12 AM |
R19 Tangerines seemed to go away as Clementines and Cuties became more popular.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 5, 2024 3:46 AM |
Have you ever shopped at a Safeway in Portland, R28? So many people on DL think that their experiences halfway across the country apply universally. The only comparisons I can make with Safeway outside of this state are their stores in SF and LA, which are better quality than our local ones. As I said in my post, they do have a few decent locations here, but still not at the level of their California locations.
Fred Meyer holds the position of everyday, mid-quality tier here pretty solidly. Some would say WinCo as well.

It's almost fall. You're in the Portland. Go to a farmers market.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 5, 2024 3:55 AM |
Unfortunately, I don't get out to the farmers markets very often because my CSA drowns me in produce this part of the year.

We call the static 70s era Cold-War era decrepit East European Safeway on Hawthorne "Safeway-istan"
Safeway in PDX is some kind of corporate grift, holding out, in some overpriced desperate and shitty state, just long enough (while overcharging their locally locked in customers) for a big stock fueled corporate sell-out.
Walking by smeared feces on the floor to buy cleaning products and pasta sauce at 2x the price elsewhere

I'm in American Samoa and they are readily available.

Fuji and gala apples are sweeter than Pink Lady.

There are no Safeways in L.A. The longstanding Vons name was retained in Southern California and continues to be used.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 5, 2024 11:42 AM |
Golden Delicious are an old apple type. Maybe when the trees aged in your area they were replanted with newer varieties?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 5, 2024 12:22 PM |
All the tasty apples I grew up with (Jonathan, Winesap, Rome) have disappeared from stores. Apparently these older varieties do not keep as well as the newer ones and are seen as less commercially viable. To me the new apples with the cutesy names are all too sweet and have sacrificed flavor for appearance/longevity.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 5, 2024 4:07 PM |
Cosmic Crisp is the best, new apples, leave the old ones alone.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 5, 2024 9:24 PM |
They’re widely available. Shop different stores.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 5, 2024 9:26 PM |
The Red Delicious taste worst even though they're good looking.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 5, 2024 9:27 PM |
A lot of the fancy franken apples are just a little too tart. The Golden D's are the perfect amount of sweetness and crispness.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 6, 2024 3:51 AM |
It's not franken apples you stupid cunt, it's called breeding, you should be shot for that.
