I thought New Yorkers were mean and rude.

A few days ago, I worked at the game between the White Sox and The Mets. In my section, there was an older man, I noticed, that would smile at me sometimes when I go down to the bottom of the isles at the top of each inning. He would look at his wife, although I am assuming that's what she was, and then nod when I would walk back up. I am fairly certain he was from NY because he had a shirt that said NYC on it. Now, the stereotype is that New Yorkers can be assholes, and that they walk around with stank faces. So I am thinking he may have did this to be snarky. But I did not expect him to smile like that because he had a pretty stern looking face. But don't mind me, I am just rambling on with my thoughts. Carry on.

Carrying on.

I loved Grand Central Station. They sent me a letter once. There was this man, once I saw him, he was selling hot dogs. I wanted a hot dog. I had a bagel instead. It was good but I dropped it on the sidewalk and a pig ate it. I think it was a pig. Perhaps it was a homeless pigeon. It was covered in shit. Maybe a stockbroker. But they don't eat bagels. It did get on the 4:14 to New Haven so who knows.

by Anonymousreply 2September 4, 2024 3:37 AM

He wanted to blow you.

Have you been to the Isle of Greece? I have.

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2024 3:42 AM

New Yorkers have come a way since the asshole days. I hadn't been there in a couple of decades and I was shocked at how friendly they were, meaning mostly the younger ones because old New Yorkers still have that rough and distant attitude.

So you selected the bagle not the sabotge.

Do they still have Cigarette Girls?

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2024 3:45 AM

OP was it your first time in New York. The asshole New Yorker is definitely a false stereotype. It’s because New Yorkers mind they motherfucking business and don’t do fake nice. If anything I feel like New Yorkers are more agreeable than other people. To me there is a New York State of mind that sort of makes you smarter as you navigate life. It makes one able to rationalize and employ a degree of fairness wherever the setting.

by Anonymousreply 8September 4, 2024 3:45 AM

Were you plying your trade at the game?

by Anonymousreply 9September 4, 2024 3:49 AM

It sounds like he was trying to fuck

by Anonymousreply 10September 4, 2024 3:59 AM

I’ve seen New Yorkers be meaner than hell to each other but they always bent over backwards to help my Midwesterner ass. They have a sixth sense about who’s not from there and doesn’t quite know where they’re going. Particularly in the pre-smartphone era and having to navigate with paper maps.

by Anonymousreply 11September 4, 2024 4:15 AM

R11 They could either sense your kind heartedness or feebleness and didn’t want you in any danger. Like I said it’s rooted in real world intelligence; why would kick someone while there down. They were likely mean to other New Yorkers who deserved that shit.

by Anonymousreply 12September 4, 2024 4:19 AM

I have been there many times. They aren't mean, but they are kind of gruff. They will help you if you ask. But I don't buy the whole "they will tell you like it is" BS line to pass off for why no one on the planet considers therm polite or or god forbid friendly.

by Anonymousreply 13September 4, 2024 4:39 AM

I'm guessing that people at MLB games tend to be nice people.

by Anonymousreply 14September 4, 2024 4:55 AM

Maybe he has a gayling grandson and wanted to make you feel comfortable.

by Anonymousreply 15September 4, 2024 4:56 AM

Remember that thread about a DLer going to his first baseball game? That was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 16September 4, 2024 5:00 AM

New Yorkers are nice until they get on DL.

by Anonymousreply 17September 4, 2024 5:00 AM

Random straight dudes don't smile at you OP unless it's in jest. "look that that queen, what's he doing here, shouldn't he be practicing for his next drag show".

by Anonymousreply 18September 4, 2024 5:01 AM

R18 I’ve had older white dudes smile at me since I was about 12. Not with any perversion either. I am very nice looking and look non threatening. It still occurs obviously with less frequency as I’m aging but a lot of times they think I’m like 20 or 21. They are just being nice.

by Anonymousreply 19September 4, 2024 5:05 AM

Oop- R10.

But on another note, I agree on their agreeableness. They seem very outspoken describe the “icy, reserved” demeanor they get stereotypes of having. Just a thought though.

by Anonymousreply 20September 4, 2024 5:37 AM

Hard on the outside, soft on the inside. The first words might be “fuck you”, but the next ones will be “do you need some help with that?”

Opposite of California.

by Anonymousreply 21September 4, 2024 8:01 AM

The real assholes are in New Hampshire.

by Anonymousreply 22September 4, 2024 11:02 AM

Food trumps homophobia.

BS. It does not matter how good looking you think you are, straight guys do no smile at gay queens randomly on the street unless they are also gay or laughing at your look.

Were you wearing a handkerchief in one of your back pockets? What color & what pocket?

by Anonymousreply 25September 6, 2024 10:31 PM

You may, unintentionally, be sending the wrong signals

by Anonymousreply 26September 6, 2024 10:35 PM

The city wasn't the same after 21 changed their lawn jockeys to white.

by Anonymousreply 27September 6, 2024 11:47 PM

They're just very angry.

by Anonymousreply 28September 7, 2024 12:00 AM

I don’t even look queeny R24. I was wearing a uniform, I look like an average guy.

by Anonymousreply 29September 7, 2024 5:49 PM

Does that make the sex better R28?

by Anonymousreply 30September 7, 2024 6:04 PM

Speaking as an oldish New Yorker who has stank face I can tell you that I get alot of attitude from strangers but when I respond with kindness in a friendly manner I can see that they realize they've misjudged me and their attitudes change.

by Anonymousreply 31September 7, 2024 6:12 PM

R22, they are crazy, too.

by Anonymousreply 32September 7, 2024 6:46 PM

That was me and she was my cousin.

How you doin’?

by Anonymousreply 33September 7, 2024 6:51 PM

I find people in NYC are always so kind and I'm a hick from the sticks.

by Anonymousreply 34September 7, 2024 6:58 PM

As NYC has gentrified, nicer, younger people have moved in. Sometimes I miss gruff and rough NYC but mostly I don’t.

by Anonymousreply 35September 7, 2024 7:12 PM

Yes. But they make the city so dull with their uninteresting personalities and blandness.

by Anonymousreply 36September 7, 2024 7:14 PM

Aisle have some peanuts and cracker jack.

by Anonymousreply 37September 7, 2024 7:21 PM

I lived in Manhattan for 35 years. New Yorkers are very often the friendliest people you'll meet.

by Anonymousreply 38September 7, 2024 7:29 PM

R37, please marry me.

by Anonymousreply 39September 7, 2024 8:02 PM

I can always tell who is not originally from NYC, they are all haughty, judgemental and self-righteous about living in NYC. They also tend to be unfriendly and uncool.

by Anonymousreply 40September 8, 2024 6:51 PM

[quote]I loved Grand Central Station.

It's not a station.

by Anonymousreply 41September 8, 2024 6:57 PM

That’s reassuring R38.

by Anonymousreply 42September 9, 2024 1:50 AM

R38, these posters are not “marinated”. NYCers are wonderful.
