Bird flu reaches cows in California, the country’s largest milk producer

[quote]The outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in US dairy cows has now spread to three herds in California, the largest milk-producing state in the country with around 1.7 million dairy cows. Fourteen states and 197 herds have now been affected by the unprecedented outbreak in dairy cows, which was first confirmed by federal health officials on March 25.

[quote]The herds in California are thought to have been infected through the movement of cattle, despite a federal order mandating testing of cattle prior to movement between states. So far, health officials believe that all of the dairy infections across the affected states stem from a single spillover event from wild birds to dairy cows in Texas. The virus is thought to spread from cow to cow, as well as from contaminated milking equipment, dirty hands, and boots.

Currently stampeding through dairy farms in California, with number of infected herds doubling over the weekend.

[quote]With the new tally, California now ranks second among all affected states for having the most herds with avian influenza. Only Colorado, which has adopted bulk milk-tank surveillance, has more, with 64 herds confirmed. California's high ranking is despite the fact that it only reported its first three infected herds on August 30, while the dairy outbreak was first confirmed on March 25 and thought to have begun late last year.

Texas farmers found it first and didn't say anything, so it spread faster, fucking Texas right wingers again, I hope a million people freeze to death in Texas this winter.

by Anonymousreply 2September 24, 2024 8:37 PM

Here you go, it was probably even longer before they said anything.

This is all Kamala Harris' fault! And of course Sleepy Joe. Now mah babies won't git their milk!

by Anonymousreply 4September 24, 2024 8:43 PM

Did anybody hear about the first Human Case of Bird Flu in Oregon the other day? Now they have confirmed three more Human cases in California. We are in deep shit with "Brain Worm" Kennedy Jr. in charge of HHS.

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2024 8:08 PM

Farm workers R5?

by Anonymousreply 6November 16, 2024 8:24 PM

I hear that H5N1 gives cows a flavor reminiscent of Kobe.

Mad Cow had such a horrible tang, but get ready to have McDonalds buy it all up and cook it well done.

by Anonymousreply 7November 16, 2024 8:28 PM

As long as it doesn't spread to almonds, I'm good.

by Anonymousreply 8November 16, 2024 8:28 PM

OMG, SAVE THE PISTACHIOS!!!

Is Nut Flu on the way?

by Anonymousreply 9November 16, 2024 8:34 PM

R8- You don't get it. It's spread to humans. The next probable development is Human to Human transmission. That's what happened in China. This is literally the next Pandemic in the making.

by Anonymousreply 10November 16, 2024 8:47 PM

Transmission to humans so far has been animal to human and from physical contact. Unless you are drinking unpasteurized milk you should be fine. The case in a pig recently was concerning, but this isn’t particularly.

by Anonymousreply 11November 16, 2024 9:05 PM

Won't someone please think of the pig-fuckers?

by Anonymousreply 12November 16, 2024 9:36 PM

R4, don't worry. Dr. Pepper's still safe.

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2024 9:47 PM

Nobody panic. RFK Jr will save us all as our new Health Czar!

US Health officials report first known case of new, more severe strain of monkeypox

by Anonymousreply 15November 17, 2024 12:00 AM

It’s travel related. It isn’t spreading in the US.

by Anonymousreply 16November 17, 2024 12:03 AM

From WaPo: The individual, who recently traveled from Africa, is isolating at home and recovering after receiving care in San Mateo County, according to the California Department of Public Health.

“There is no concern or evidence that this form of the mpox virus, clade 1, is currently spreading between individuals in California or the United States,” the California health department said in a statement. Nevertheless, public health workers are notifying close contacts of person, the department said.

It isn’t spreading fast. All the infected are dairy workers.

by Anonymousreply 21November 17, 2024 10:06 AM

Hey Elder Lez, are you an Epidemiologist?

by Anonymousreply 22November 17, 2024 10:37 AM

The more humans it infects, the more opportunity it will have to potentially mutate or combine with regular human flu and fuck us up. Each of those dairy workers is a test tube.

Or if it takes hold in pigs, who are susceptible to human flu., that would be bad news.

An opportune time for the incoming HHS head to declare he will deprioritize infectious diseases as a research focus at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

by Anonymousreply 24November 17, 2024 10:48 AM

R22 no

RFK Jr. plans to defund NIAID for the next 8 years so no more influenza centers of excellence or funding for the development of the universal flu vaccine, which FWIW is very close to becoming reality. That said, I don’t think he’ll succeed and DOD might pick up the funding for national security reasons. That said making the situation seem more dire than it is, is not helpful. It’s like the boy who cried wolf, but with public health.

by Anonymousreply 25November 17, 2024 11:52 AM

And back to blocking Sylvia Fowler and his fetish for bad biological new. A real life Debbie Downer. What ails you, man?

by Anonymousreply 26November 17, 2024 1:55 PM

Elder Lez, I also want to thank you for your substantive, non-alarmist content. Much more helpful and constructive than Salacious B. Crumb's orgasms at finding the next story about end of days.

by Anonymousreply 27November 17, 2024 1:57 PM

R26 I've said before in another thread that I am not currently concerned about anyone's risk for H1N1 unless they're a dairy/poultry farmer or live near them. That doesn't mean that the situation doesn't bear close monitoring and getting ahead of because we cannot blithely dismiss the potential for human to human transmission to develop. And the chuckleheads who will be in charge three months from now will most emphatically NOT be doing that.

In short, fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 28November 17, 2024 3:00 PM

Oh, what a great idea, R26, block someone who's actually bringing information. You should call the White House. Maybe RFK, Jr, is looking for an unpaid intern.

by Anonymousreply 29November 17, 2024 3:07 PM

Sylvia was a scaremonger, R29. Aim higher.

by Anonymousreply 30November 17, 2024 3:23 PM

In brief, climb back under your bed and panic quietly. You earned your reputation, you hysteric.

by Anonymousreply 31November 17, 2024 3:25 PM

As always, with you, Sylvia it may masquerade as substance, but you lust for what might happen, so long as it's bad.

In short, you are not helping, except to ease your own nervousness.

End of from me. It's such a shame these threads have to be spoilt by the chattering doomsaying of this fool. Can't she just get a therapist with skill?

by Anonymousreply 32November 17, 2024 3:28 PM

[quote] End of from me.

Promise?

by Anonymousreply 33November 17, 2024 4:08 PM

Elder lez talks a lot, and sounds important, but she lives in a trailer in hurricane prone Florida, there's that.

by Anonymousreply 34November 17, 2024 4:23 PM

A woman on Threads said she caught it while in China. Said symptoms were much worse than Covid. If Joe wants to do something before he leaves, stockpile blue states with PPE.

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2024 4:38 PM

R34 That's Senior Lez, not Elder Lez. Elder Lez lives on Long Island.

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2024 4:44 PM

Just get some ivermectin and y'all be fine.

by Anonymousreply 37November 17, 2024 4:53 PM

Sylvia is correct R34. You have me confused with senior lesbian. I live Lawn Guyland in a small, but fancy condominium apartment with my wife and our cavalier King Charles spaniel.

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2024 5:50 PM

The three pillars of Post Civil War and post 1965 business domination in order to keep a cheap labor pool:

Keep them sick.

Keep them poor.

Keep them stupid.

Fucking up Healthcare? Keep them sick✅ keep them poor✅

Do it for ALL Republican policy changes!

Start a class war on Student Loan Forgiveness? Keep them stupid✅ keep the poor✅

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2024 6:36 PM

Sick, stupid people aren’t such great workers.

I would think in debt and avaricious would be more helpful.

by Anonymousreply 40November 17, 2024 6:41 PM

But they have to stay employed and work no matter the conditions and if you live in a Right To Work state, you are fucked. Poor people live paycheck to paycheck.

And yes, you are right ElderLez, sick stupid people aren't such great workers, but with the federal minimum wage in 2024 being $7.25 per hour (the same as it has been since 2009) hire TWO of them and let them Hunger Games every day.

by Anonymousreply 41November 17, 2024 6:48 PM

Elder Lez lives on Long Island.

That's not my problem bitch, are you Muriel the cunt? You seem to know a lot.

by Anonymousreply 42November 17, 2024 9:09 PM

Pardon R42? Who are you addressing?

by Anonymousreply 43November 17, 2024 9:11 PM

Lawn Guyland

It sounds like it too, very uppity and know it all, typical NY attitude.
