Bird flu reaches cows in California, the country’s largest milk producer
[quote]The outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in US dairy cows has now spread to three herds in California, the largest milk-producing state in the country with around 1.7 million dairy cows. Fourteen states and 197 herds have now been affected by the unprecedented outbreak in dairy cows, which was first confirmed by federal health officials on March 25.
[quote]The herds in California are thought to have been infected through the movement of cattle, despite a federal order mandating testing of cattle prior to movement between states. So far, health officials believe that all of the dairy infections across the affected states stem from a single spillover event from wild birds to dairy cows in Texas. The virus is thought to spread from cow to cow, as well as from contaminated milking equipment, dirty hands, and boots.

Currently stampeding through dairy farms in California, with number of infected herds doubling over the weekend.
[quote]With the new tally, California now ranks second among all affected states for having the most herds with avian influenza. Only Colorado, which has adopted bulk milk-tank surveillance, has more, with 64 herds confirmed. California's high ranking is despite the fact that it only reported its first three infected herds on August 30, while the dairy outbreak was first confirmed on March 25 and thought to have begun late last year.

Did anybody hear about the first Human Case of Bird Flu in Oregon the other day? Now they have confirmed three more Human cases in California. We are in deep shit with "Brain Worm" Kennedy Jr. in charge of HHS.

I hear that H5N1 gives cows a flavor reminiscent of Kobe.

R8- You don't get it. It's spread to humans. The next probable development is Human to Human transmission. That's what happened in China. This is literally the next Pandemic in the making.

Transmission to humans so far has been animal to human and from physical contact. Unless you are drinking unpasteurized milk you should be fine. The case in a pig recently was concerning, but this isn’t particularly.

From WaPo: The individual, who recently traveled from Africa, is isolating at home and recovering after receiving care in San Mateo County, according to the California Department of Public Health.
“There is no concern or evidence that this form of the mpox virus, clade 1, is currently spreading between individuals in California or the United States,” the California health department said in a statement. Nevertheless, public health workers are notifying close contacts of person, the department said.

The more humans it infects, the more opportunity it will have to potentially mutate or combine with regular human flu and fuck us up. Each of those dairy workers is a test tube.
Or if it takes hold in pigs, who are susceptible to human flu., that would be bad news.

R22 no
RFK Jr. plans to defund NIAID for the next 8 years so no more influenza centers of excellence or funding for the development of the universal flu vaccine, which FWIW is very close to becoming reality. That said, I don’t think he’ll succeed and DOD might pick up the funding for national security reasons. That said making the situation seem more dire than it is, is not helpful. It’s like the boy who cried wolf, but with public health.

R26 I've said before in another thread that I am not currently concerned about anyone's risk for H1N1 unless they're a dairy/poultry farmer or live near them. That doesn't mean that the situation doesn't bear close monitoring and getting ahead of because we cannot blithely dismiss the potential for human to human transmission to develop. And the chuckleheads who will be in charge three months from now will most emphatically NOT be doing that.
In short, fuck off.
