The only place I encounter young people in their 20s who consider themselves cinephiles and watch everything from the most recent critically acclaimed movies to the classics is online. In real life many young people are not into movies like that and generally prefer music or television.
Why are young people generally more into music than movies?

Shorter attention span. Even the length of an average pop hit has gone down to 3 minutes or even less.

They develop parasocial relationships with musicians because the musicians are mostly writing about themselves and their lives. With movies, the actors are just playing a role written by someone else.

Movies fail to transport viewers magically, or the impact is dulled, because young people have so many unreal worlds at their fingertips. The magic of movies is no longer unique or impressive. Games are better for them. I can see why. Movies are not interactive.

Watching a 90-minute (or god forbid a whole two-hour) movie requires attention span, intellectual ability to put story, theme, and tone into context, and let's face it, just the basic ability to focus on one thing for an extended period of time. Compared to music, which is rhythmic, repetitive, and brief, it's no contest. The algorithm of our lives has been adjusted by social media to short-form entertainment and lots of it.
And this is nothing new, We used to have plays that lasted three, four, even 8 hours ([italic]Nicholas Nickleby,[/italic] for instance). We used to have movies that were so long they had to have an intermission to allow the audience to pee (and the projectionist a chance to re-rack; like [italic]Lawrence of Arabia,[/italic] ). When it comes to music, we had albums that were best listened to in one contiguous playback that formed one narrative and story (Pink Floyd's [italic]The Wall,[italic] for instance).
And it is what it is. We have a lot more people creating content, the content is much more diverse, interesting and entertaining, and new forms of entertainment bring a whole new experience to our lives (gaming, for example and as R5 points out). Our world continues to evolve.
