[post redacted because linking to dailymail.co.uk clearly indicates that the poster is either a troll or an idiot (probably both, honestly.) Our advice is that you just ignore this poster but whatever you do, don't click on any link to this putrid rag.]

Why not?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 1, 2024 9:13 PM |
Because the tower is a symbol of Paris and France and will now forever be associated with the Olympic movement . Is that a decision for one politician who is closely identified with the games? Strikes me as an ego trip.

The IOC owns the copyright and would not allow it, given the ubiquity of the Eiffel Tower in media and merchandise.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 1, 2024 9:18 PM |
Oh, how gauche.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 1, 2024 9:19 PM |
No. The Eifel Tower is one of those iconic views people expect to look a certain way like The Statue of Liberty or Big Ben that shouldn't be permanently altered.

The IOC’s branding guidelines are extremely strict as you’ll see here
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 1, 2024 9:21 PM |
How can a mayor permanently alter a monument? Can’t the next mayor just remove the rings or decide to put a McDonalds logo on there?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 1, 2024 9:24 PM |
Paris owns it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 1, 2024 9:26 PM |
It's ugly enough already, what difference does it make throwing on more random tchotchkes
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 1, 2024 9:27 PM |
Obviously, “forever” is aspirational. A future mayor can reverse her decision.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 1, 2024 9:27 PM |
The Olympic rings on the Eiffel tower will continue to remind everyone that the Seine is still pretty stinky.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 1, 2024 9:47 PM |
The rings will remain until the IOC tells them to pay for their use or take them down.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 1, 2024 9:56 PM |
Letting them remain for a year, or for the rest of this year is a gesture, assuming the city is granted permission to do. Arguing that they should remain permanently is unreasonable.
A world monument may wear the garment of time, but it shouldn't be permanently redecorated according to the fashion or mood of a moment.

Remove the rings.
Maybe the next mayor will have more sense.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 1, 2024 10:02 PM |
I expect that from London.
But you, Paris?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 1, 2024 10:03 PM |
Oh they’ll take it down once they’re sick of it.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 1, 2024 10:04 PM |
The Eiffel Tower was used for years to advertise Citroen cars.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 1, 2024 10:04 PM |
^^Tacky
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 1, 2024 10:14 PM |
just keep a couple up and put the rest in a museum
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 1, 2024 10:28 PM |
I didn't watch anything but the opening ceremonies which sucked. I think France would be better off forgetting the goddamn games.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 1, 2024 10:41 PM |
R18 That’s what the said about the Eiffel Tower itself.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 1, 2024 10:58 PM |
Publicity stunt, meant to stir shit.

Since we're changing monuments, I'd like a chic, sassy number from Forever XXI. I've been wearing this goddamned Grecian robe for ages!

Trash city
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 2, 2024 1:14 AM |
Tacky.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 2, 2024 3:47 AM |
Hardly R26. It's the most beautiful city on the planet.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 2, 2024 3:50 AM |
I meant that the rings on the tower are super tacky, like R27 said. We all know that NYC is the literal trash city (welcome to the world of trash cans, guys).
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 2, 2024 4:07 AM |
The rings should be removed. The Eiffel Tower is iconic. The Citroen stuff was probably paid-for advertisement.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 2, 2024 4:19 AM |
I don't think they should even though they put on a great event this year.
