What say our tasteful friends?

Why not?

by Anonymousreply 2September 1, 2024 9:13 PM

Because the tower is a symbol of Paris and France and will now forever be associated with the Olympic movement . Is that a decision for one politician who is closely identified with the games? Strikes me as an ego trip.

by Anonymousreply 3September 1, 2024 9:17 PM

The IOC owns the copyright and would not allow it, given the ubiquity of the Eiffel Tower in media and merchandise.

by Anonymousreply 4September 1, 2024 9:18 PM

Oh, how gauche.

by Anonymousreply 5September 1, 2024 9:19 PM

No. The Eifel Tower is one of those iconic views people expect to look a certain way like The Statue of Liberty or Big Ben that shouldn't be permanently altered.

by Anonymousreply 6September 1, 2024 9:21 PM

The IOC’s branding guidelines are extremely strict as you’ll see here

How can a mayor permanently alter a monument? Can’t the next mayor just remove the rings or decide to put a McDonalds logo on there?

by Anonymousreply 8September 1, 2024 9:24 PM

Paris owns it.

by Anonymousreply 9September 1, 2024 9:26 PM

It's ugly enough already, what difference does it make throwing on more random tchotchkes

by Anonymousreply 10September 1, 2024 9:27 PM

Obviously, “forever” is aspirational. A future mayor can reverse her decision.

by Anonymousreply 11September 1, 2024 9:27 PM

The Olympic rings on the Eiffel tower will continue to remind everyone that the Seine is still pretty stinky.

by Anonymousreply 12September 1, 2024 9:47 PM

The rings will remain until the IOC tells them to pay for their use or take them down.

by Anonymousreply 13September 1, 2024 9:56 PM

Uh huh

Letting them remain for a year, or for the rest of this year is a gesture, assuming the city is granted permission to do. Arguing that they should remain permanently is unreasonable.

A world monument may wear the garment of time, but it shouldn't be permanently redecorated according to the fashion or mood of a moment.

by Anonymousreply 15September 1, 2024 10:01 PM

Remove the rings.

Maybe the next mayor will have more sense.

by Anonymousreply 16September 1, 2024 10:02 PM

I expect that from London.

But you, Paris?

by Anonymousreply 17September 1, 2024 10:03 PM

Oh they’ll take it down once they’re sick of it.

by Anonymousreply 18September 1, 2024 10:04 PM

The Eiffel Tower was used for years to advertise Citroen cars.

^^Tacky

by Anonymousreply 20September 1, 2024 10:14 PM

just keep a couple up and put the rest in a museum

by Anonymousreply 21September 1, 2024 10:28 PM

I didn't watch anything but the opening ceremonies which sucked. I think France would be better off forgetting the goddamn games.

by Anonymousreply 22September 1, 2024 10:41 PM

R18 That’s what the said about the Eiffel Tower itself.

by Anonymousreply 23September 1, 2024 10:58 PM

Publicity stunt, meant to stir shit.

by Anonymousreply 24September 1, 2024 11:01 PM

Since we're changing monuments, I'd like a chic, sassy number from Forever XXI. I've been wearing this goddamned Grecian robe for ages!

by Anonymousreply 25September 2, 2024 12:16 AM

Trash city

by Anonymousreply 26September 2, 2024 1:14 AM

Tacky.

by Anonymousreply 27September 2, 2024 3:47 AM

Hardly R26. It's the most beautiful city on the planet.

by Anonymousreply 28September 2, 2024 3:50 AM

I meant that the rings on the tower are super tacky, like R27 said. We all know that NYC is the literal trash city (welcome to the world of trash cans, guys).

by Anonymousreply 29September 2, 2024 4:07 AM

The rings should be removed. The Eiffel Tower is iconic. The Citroen stuff was probably paid-for advertisement.

by Anonymousreply 30September 2, 2024 4:19 AM

I don't think they should even though they put on a great event this year.
