A few years ago he liked a "Dynasty" GIF tweeted in response to tennis drama (possibly in Pam Shriver's feed), which made me think "Oh, he must be officially 'out' now." Not that everyone hadn't already known for a long time by then.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 1, 2024 8:12 PM |
There is no doubt that Jan-Michael Gambill is gay and lives with his partner, Malek Alqadi. It's plain for all to see. But Gambill is not "out." And that doesn't sit right by me. I wish we lived in a society where you do not have to publicly express your sexuality, especially if you are a gay man. Maybe we'll get there one day. Until then, it's important for public figures who are gay to come out and talk about it. There are still so many young LGBT kids out there struggling with their sexuality in all fields, but sports in America especially.
Gambill was and is successful in the world of professional tennis. He should be vocal in his support of gay youth in tennis. Until he does that, I might think he's a very good-looking and sexy man, but I find him a tad pathetic. In a way he's still hiding in the closet. It's a very privileged one that we can see if we go looking. He should be a little louder to say he has stepped out of it.

I'm not sure how much of an example he'd set by coming out to Bonnie Prince Charlie's standard. He gives every appearance of being shallow and looks obsessed. So if Charlie's plea is very Act Up, Gambill's role model is very Atlantis Cruises White Party. No particular loss, in my view.

Fuck the coward retirees of all types who swagger through their careers and then, once they have the money, announce they're gay.
Gay youth really have those strong, brave role models to look to when dealing with their own idiot families and personal confusion.

I know there are varying degrees of "out," but the fact that he's never informed the media that he's gay and in a LTR in no way means anyone thinks he's straight. Unless you happen to know his family or something, how on earth do you know either way the degree to which he's out? (even partially) He's been with his partner – who btw is both hot to death and an incredible architect – for over a decade; he's in his late 40s and never married; and hasn't ever dated women. Even Helen Keller could solve this one.
I'm not sure Ronan Farrow's ever said the words, "I'm gay," in public, but I also can't think of anyone who *wouldn't* know Ronan's queer (even if they don't see him fawning over his new beau on his IG).

Though looking at his brother's IG further, he does appear to be obtuse enough to consider that in support, also looking at his support of RFK Jr.

This is Jan-Michael's account, since his brother's keeps getting mistaken for his.
Jan-Michael posted a couple of tributes to former First Lady Barbara Bush, but mostly sticks with thirst trap photos. He's also supportive of Elton John's AIDS fundraising efforts, which is an indirect tribute of sorts to Fauci on at least one count.

R27, I agree. As I wrote you have to dig to find out he's gay. His posts on Instagram do not refer to Malek Alqadi as his partner....let alone lover, boyfriend, or spouse.

And, again, I think you're WAY too hung up on language. (And who TF describes someone as their "lover" on IG? Even in Europe.) I'm not sure how many long-term gay couples you know, but it's not like coming out is some sort of shocking process nowadays. Even ten years ago, a celebrity coming out would make headlines for days. Nowadays we have actors who literally don't even bother, because they were never hidden or closeted in the first place.
I'll even cite an example: James Scully. The first thing I saw him in was the second season of "You," where he played the main supporting character. He didn't "ping" (or at least his character didn't), and I had no idea he was gay until he starred in "Fire Island." For the past year he's been starring in his highest-profile gig to date: "Oh, Mary!", the truly awesome – and VERY queer – Broadway production about Mary Todd Lincoln.
He's been seeing Julio Torres for at least 18 months now, but hasn't mentioned it a single time on his IG. He's only pictured him a few times, mainly from when they both starred in "Problemista" with Tilda Swinton. I'm not sure he's ever even said the word "gay" or "queer" online. Nonetheless, you'd have to be deaf, blind & dumb to not "get it." Straight people don't immediately know the meaning of FIP, or make June plans around Pride, or invite huge groups of friends to stay at their home, one in which they've shared the same bed for well over a decade.
Do you seriously think it'd matter a single bit if Gambill suddenly decided to announce, "I'm a big homo and I've been fucking an architect for most of my adult life"? The general public has no idea who he is and would give zero shits. The insiders who do know him already know he's queer.
It's 2024. Celebrities are no longer expected to "make a statement" about their orientation. I'm assuming you're an eldergay, since every gay I know under 35 is aware of all of the above.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 2, 2024 6:57 PM |

It's kind of like the Facebook Story argument.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 2, 2024 7:23 PM |
He no longer plays.
What matters is an active pro player on the ATP tour coming out.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 2, 2024 8:23 PM |
I can see it from both sides. I agree JMG doesn't need to 'come out' given he's obviously in a long term relationship with a man and he doesn't actively hide that.
But I also think R16 has a point that he could do more to support gay youth in tennis. He will have known how hard it was being in the closet as a pro tennis player and likely guesses there will be players in the same position now. It's bizarre that there has never been an out male professional tennis player ever.
Thing like that don't really change unless something is done actively. Resting on one's laurels and saying "ah, it'll happen eventually" is naive at best. We wouldn't enjoy the freedoms and equalities we have today if everyone had had the same attitude.
If he'd vanished into obscurity, there'd be less of an argument for it, but he's happy to be attention-whorey with his thirst traps on Instagram so he's clearly comfortable having the spotlight on him.
That said, I know non-celebrity gay male friends who are the same. They don't lie and say they're straight but they also never mention their boyfriend on any form of social media, despite being active on it. There's still a large amount of "don't rock the boat by talking about it" in the mindset of gay people.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 2, 2024 9:03 PM |
“Coming out” is an old gay man thing.
Now people just live how they want publicly like this guy.
If it’s important to you that he say “I’m coming out”, then you’re an old gay.

If he did make a big thing about "coming out" the DL mean aunties would savage him anyway.
He's a private citizen and what he does in private is nobodys' business but his own.
The Elton John pic is pretty sketchy though.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 2, 2024 11:07 PM |
R64 I mean, he's older than I am, so if I'm an old gay then JMG is, too.
R68 You only ever hear that kind of rhetoric when it comes to gays, though. "His private life is his own" is never said about a straight man's wife or girlfriend. No straight man (assuming he's not cheating) is cagey about his wife. He just isn't.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 2, 2024 11:10 PM |
Forgot to say thing like:
"I've got nothing against gay people, but keep your private life private. We don't need to know about his boyfriend/husband" are said reasonably frequently, but the following never is:
"I've got nothing against straight people, but keep your private life private. We don't need to know about his girlfriend/wife".
When gays feed into the former mentality it's because (deep down) they're a little bit ashamed and they think joining in with it shields them from it.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 2, 2024 11:13 PM |
R70, you type like grandpa on Facebook.
The guy is living his life openly with another man. The old-fashioned act of coming out is exactly that: old-fashioned. You are allowed to live your life now and you don’t have to scream “I am gay.” And if you are a former athlete, you don’t have to give an exclusive interview to outsports. That is not how it’s done anymore.
Of course this was not a problem for you. Because we heard you talk and saw you walk.

This is exactly right. I would also say that if it's important to you that young gays have "role models," you're an old gay. Young gays don't need role models anymore. (I'm 61 years old and even I can figure that out.)
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 3, 2024 4:45 AM |
^ That's not true. You think "young gays" in sports want all the athletes to stay in the closet and create the impression that gays in the sports world don't exist?
by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 3, 2024 4:55 AM |
R91 Indeed. As I pointed out earlier, Carl Nassib came out publicly at age 28, being the first active NFL player to do so. And he did that despite describing himself as a "pretty private person". However, he wanted to do it to support The Trevor Project/gay youth.
I don't think any sportsman or woman should ever feel forced into coming out against their will, but it's disingenuous to act like it's completely unnecessary in 2024. Acting as a role model can still do a lot of good for people struggling with their sexual orientation; especially those who live in rural areas or conservative families who may not necessarily have any support in their immediate environment.

We are surely past the point we need famous people to make us OK. Give me a community of men and women living normal lives any day, examples to each other and their communities, over the usually tortured publicity of a small collection of out celebrity gays, who are probably living cliched, shallow lives as dodgy role models anyway.
