Today in History: Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in car crash
On Aug. 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed as the car she was riding in crashed on the Pont de l’Alma bridge in Paris; her partner Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul (who was found to have been intoxicated at the time of the accident) also died.
The most horrible tragedy of our lifetime.

I still miss Diana. She's been dead for 27 years.

I just had just gotten back from a vacation and turned on CNN to unpack and there was the wreckage. They hadn’t pronounced her dead yet. It was shocking and it felt weird as we were the same age.

Drunk driver, no seatbelt - happens every day and was completely avoidable.

R6. Yes, it was a drunk driver an no seatbelts, but it doesn't make it any less tragic. And, the paparazzi were chasing Diana, and the driver probably would not have been driving at a high speed if the driver had not been trying to escape them.

R8 There no other cars involved right? Weird crash. It’s rare you have a crash in a tunnel with no other cars involved. Driver was very familiar with the tunnel. Probably murdered.

R10. It's an older tunnel. The dividing posts inside the tunnel are exposed rather than having a dividing island in the center of the tunnel which are now built to avoid smashing into the posts and causing head-on collisions.

I was walking through Times Square from my bartending job when the screens were a lit up with the coverage. There was a group of tourists gathered close by and they were very upset. I watched the chyron scrolls with them for awhile and tried to be reassuring that she was probably going to be fine, maybe just some rehabilitation. I hugged a few of them and went home, crashed. I woke up around noon and saw she had died. I really never cared much about the royals but I was sad for the people she meant something to.

Something so simple as not wearing a seat belt. It's a great shame.

I was in a pizza joint and "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt came on the jukebox. A minute later the big TV sitting on the wall shelf (no flat screens those days kids) had the runner that she was in an accident. The next day, hearing she was dead, I started thinking of that song playing at that time...it was then I realized I could communicate with the dead...
