Why is she slumming in dreck like this? Is it because she’s friends with Lee Daniels?

She needs to work for $

I watched it today…it’s terrible.

I'm sick a religious indoctrination being packaged through horror movies. I went to the movies today and at least three of the interminable trailers were about demonic possesion.

She's in her late Bette Davis years, sadly. But no doubt it'll all be forgotten once Sunset Boulevard is released.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 1, 2024 2:38 AM |
Believe it or not, 77 year old actresses don't have their pick of a big variety of roles, and aren't really in demand any more.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 1, 2024 2:39 AM |
I thought it was a remake and she was going to be fucking Ned Beatty up the ass.

R5: M?

Too bad there aren't many soaps left. They hired a ton of a has beens back in the eighties.

God forbid she gets cast as Norma in the movie version.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 1, 2024 2:58 AM |
She's getting close to the age Gloria Swanson was when she died (84). Gloria was 50 in SB.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 1, 2024 3:05 AM |
Because she doesn't want to be ignored.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 1, 2024 3:09 AM |
Wouldn’t it be hilarious if G finally gets an Oscar for saying NAPPY PUSSY.

R13 I fear this performance is a Razzie contender.
Mo’Nique was good, but the role was too brief

Very true. But at age 77, after a stellar career of 50 years, why does she insist on continuing to star in movies? Why not pivot to something else or simply relax and enjoy life, rather than taking these increasingly desperate-seeming, "transformative" roles in awful, direct-to-streaming movies?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 1, 2024 1:13 PM |
She needs to star ⭐️ in a sequel to
Albert Nobbs
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 1, 2024 1:19 PM |
R15, good question, but I think at heart being a movie star is just glorified gig work. You’re only as good as your next lined-up project. It can become an obsession, “the next project.”
I am fairly friendly with an actor who has retired despite being in a recently released, highly regarded film because it was having an effect on her mental health to be constantly obsessing about the next pic, which has to be as prestigious as the previous gig.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 1, 2024 3:22 PM |
R17 was your friend Carol Kane?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 1, 2024 4:41 PM |
No r18, she’s much younger (and prettier).
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 1, 2024 4:46 PM |
I think she needs to star in a sequel to Maxie.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 1, 2024 4:58 PM |
An acting career to an actor must be like sex to a gay man. Parting with that part of your life is an inevitability but quite demanding emotionally.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 1, 2024 4:58 PM |
She likes to work. Maybe she was attracted to the role rather than the movie. She seemed to be having a blast at the premiere. Who cares as long as she's having fun and getting paid.

Those chola eyebrows are my favorite.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 1, 2024 5:24 PM |
I hear she'll still booty-pop if you ask her, so long as it's on camera, but you'll pay more because there's more to twerk.

Reminds me of Eddie Murphy's old joke about black people and haunted houses. As soon as they see a ghost, they'll be out the door and never come back. They don't stick around like white people do.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 1, 2024 7:23 PM |
I agree I think she took this movie for the fun role. It’s a shit movie but she got to dress up which I’m sure she enjoyed.

Hoo boy, was this movie bad. What could have been an interesting family drama/psychological thriller devolves into a ridiculous mash up of The Amityville Horror and The Exorcist, with Lee Daniels' throwing in some not-so-subtle "if you believe in Jesus, you can do anything" bullshit.
Monique's part was completely inconsequential to the movie. It's like Lee Daniels felt like he had to give her a role now that he's no longer feuding with her.
And I agree with R14. The only award Glenn's gonna get for this one is a Razzie. She was beyond over the top. She was to Mars and back. And can we talk about those Trilogy of Terror teeth she had during the "deliverance" scene? OMG. I couldn't stop laughing.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 3, 2024 3:17 PM |
I remember Sissy Spacek saying that success as a film star can be paralyzing in that it can cause an actor to become obsessed with maintaining the status they’ve acquired, and stop taking risks as a result.
‘The Deliverance’ is not a great film, but I was thoroughly entertained by Glenn Close’s go-for-broke performance, and like that she took the chance. Playing it safe doesn’t result in an interesting or varied filmography.

R31 thinks this shit is critically acclaimed

[quote] She's getting close to the age Gloria Swanson was when she died (84). Gloria was 50 in SB.
But she still wants to play Gloria's most famous part when she was 50. Glenn, there's nothing wrong with being 80 unless you're trying to be 15.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 4, 2024 12:53 AM |
Or 50.
Also, I find i musicals, it's really good to be able to sing well.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 4, 2024 2:09 AM |
R15, it could very well be that she needs the money, possibly for reasons few know about. This was why Nicolas Cage ended up doing six shitty direct-to-DVD (and then to streaming) a year: it turned out he blew $100 million on bullshit – but claimed his "money manager" "conned" him – and had to pay up. This is kinda sad, but Bruce Willis's family had him star in 20-odd movies *after* his aphasia started, solely because they wanted to milk that payola teat while they still could.
Or she could just be jealous that she never had Meryl's acclaim, and is slowly melting down over it.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 4, 2024 2:13 AM |
Or she thinks it's fun making movies and the parts at this age are fun too. Why did Meryl make Mamma Mia!? Because it was a lark.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 4, 2024 2:16 AM |
Glenn was nothing less than fully committed to the role in "The Deliverance." The film is reductive but her performance is camp hall of fame.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 11, 2024 5:43 PM |
The film is he worst POS I've seen in a long time. Daniels gets the ghetto part right but the demonic possession is so badly executed it doesn't even work as a symbol of anything. Plus, I'm tired of these idiotic stories making Jesus, a peasant who may or may not have lived 2000 years ago, the savior of anything.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 11, 2024 5:54 PM |
The demonic possession was a metaphor for Black intergenerational pain and trauma tearing the fabric of the Black family. The mother's stated goal at the end was to prioritize making her family whole.

Does he? I've never seen anyone like Glenn Close's character in real life before, especially mixing with black people. Which doesn't surprise me because he grew up in a nice white neighborhood.

R39 It wasn't that deep, honey.

R40 Close's character is a gross caricature of people I have met.

I grew up in the 70s living in a black neighborhood. We were the only white family on the block.

Yes that’s what I was referring to upthread. My actress friend said there was no point in her career in which she WASN’T worried. Will I get a good part? Will I perform well? Will the movie get a wide release? Will it be commercially and financially successful? Rinse and repeat until you retire, age out or die.
She has a husband who’s a very successful performer so she doesn’t need to work anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 11, 2024 7:18 PM |
[quote] [R40] Close's character is a gross caricature of people I have met.
Maybe for you. She's not a caricature to others. In Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland -- any rigidly segregated city where white flight occurred -- Close's character was part of the broken white family left behind as the neighborhood changed. They adapted culturally to their new environment.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 11, 2024 8:13 PM |
My problem with the movie was not the actors who were all excellent but the relentless pandering of religiosity masquerading as a horror movie.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 11, 2024 8:50 PM |
Did they reuse the poster for "Beloved"?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 11, 2024 9:07 PM |
R47 That's what really made my eyes roll, too.
The whole movie just devolved into a Baptist church service in the final act.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 11, 2024 9:32 PM |
She may as well be having fun and good for her. But her filmography for the last twenty years or so is extremely shitty. Maybe she chooses badly or is influenced by over the top roles that she thinks will land her the oscar.
Her last good role was in Damages, where she gave an outstanding performance. It has not been repeated.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 11, 2024 9:42 PM |
Patty Hewes is an iconic character. It is a performance that cannot be repeated or replicated.

La Close is apparently turning to Star Wars on Disney plus next. She’s going to play the adult Grogu.

I am tempted to watch just to see how bad it is
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 14, 2024 1:40 PM |
It's bad but it's not the kind of bad that you want to watch to laugh at. It's just B.A.D. and Glenn Close in demonic possession form is only on for seconds as a vision another character is having.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 14, 2024 7:55 PM |
R61 Oh, believe me, it was that bad. I laughed out loud during Glenn's demonic possession scene, as I did when she was showing her lacy bra during her chemo treatment.
This movie has the potential to be a cult comedy classic.
