Lovely (and rare) profile of the superb comic actress Carol Kane

She's up there with the late Madeline Kahn and Catherine O'Hara as one of the most brilliant comic actresses to emerge in the 70s, but she rarely gets the recognition she deserves.

Carol was great on Gotham as the Penguin's mother.

by Anonymousreply 1August 30, 2024 8:18 PM

She should be much more well known - hilarious actress

by Anonymousreply 2August 30, 2024 8:22 PM

Currently killing it on Star Trek as well, of all places.

by Anonymousreply 3August 30, 2024 8:26 PM

Thanks for linking this, OP. I grew up watching her in seemingly everything and have always enjoyed her performances. For some reason I had it in my head that she wasn’t the nicest person so I’m glad to read she’s so well-loved by her friends and colleagues.

Carol dated Woody Harrelson years ago. They were an odd, but cool pairing.

She was hilarious in "When a Stranger Calls Back" when she goes full whoop-ass on the killer. So out of character for her.

by Anonymousreply 7August 31, 2024 2:34 AM

She looks like someone just shot her husband

With all her heart she still loves the man she killed.

I once saw her on Broadway at 79th St, thought I recognized her from work, and smiled and wave. She smiled and waved back - very nice of her, as I probably looked crazy.

Her Oscar nomination is rad and an early example of grass roots campaigns. A golden age actress, I forget who, took prints door to door to NY voters.

She's gold on Kimmy Schmidt. Should have had a better career

A good friend of mine (a woman) used to be her chaperone when Carol went on vacation, the point being that Carol was so loony that her manager and agent refused to let her travel without someone watching to make sure she didn't wander off into the sunset, or the ocean, or the bar, or the men's room, or the janitor's closet, or the basement, or wherever.

Said that Carol was really sweet and fun but didn't have many marbles inside her head.

Even as a kid in the 1970s I thought she looked like an old time silent film actress.

by Anonymousreply 13August 31, 2024 4:44 AM

I adored her in Scrooged as the Ghost of Christmas Present, I try to watch it every year just for her...well...and Mary Lou Retton as Tiny Tim...

by Anonymousreply 14August 31, 2024 5:03 AM

Sorry that should be Ghost of Christmas Past

by Anonymousreply 15August 31, 2024 5:04 AM

My favorite thing in "Scrooged" is when she babytalks to the vicious dog, calling it "Cujo."

by Anonymousreply 16August 31, 2024 6:12 AM

She and Billy Crystal are hilarious in "The Princess Bride."

I think she was so uniquely beautiful when she was young.

I really loved her albums more than her acting though! She felt the sky tumbling down, a’tumbling down!

by Anonymousreply 20August 31, 2024 6:46 AM

CITIZEN KANE tells her life story

by Anonymousreply 21August 31, 2024 6:49 AM

She has a small supporting role in Jumpin Jack Flash with Whoopi Goldberg and my brother and I still quote her lines. She’s great at making even small roles memorable

by Anonymousreply 22August 31, 2024 7:13 AM

Nice to see Carol get her flowers. She was HILARIOUS in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

R22. "Terr-REEE! What's goin' on?!"

by Anonymousreply 24August 31, 2024 7:23 AM

Fuck the NYT!

by Anonymousreply 25August 31, 2024 7:43 AM

I saw her in the new film "Between the Temples" last week. She stars with Jason Schwartzman. It's a very sweet and funny movie and she is very good in it.

by Anonymousreply 26August 31, 2024 9:47 AM

R22, yes! My friend and I watched that dumb movie over and over in high school, and Carol was so funny.

“Terry! She’s opening the strollah!!”

She is really great in a disturbing little horror movie called The Mafu Cage, with DL legend Lee Grant as her sister. It’s a complete departure from her comic roles.

Met her at the Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS Flea Market and have the "When A Stranger Calls" DVD signed.

by Anonymousreply 29August 31, 2024 1:08 PM

I’ve never heard of The Mafu Cage, but just read about. Love Carol, love Lee, but not sure I can watch that!

by Anonymousreply 30August 31, 2024 1:32 PM

I saw her years ago in a theater lobby. That wild mop of curly hair was unmistakable. I didn’t approach her though, to respect her privacy. A unique talent, great in everything she does (I loved her fight against gentrification in Kimmy Schmidt)

by Anonymousreply 31August 31, 2024 1:54 PM

She has the weirdest voice.

by Anonymousreply 32August 31, 2024 5:34 PM

"When a Stranger Calls" is so underrated. And she's terrific in it.

She doesn't get props for her drama work. She was nominated for an oscar for a drama movie.

I watched HESTER STREET again recently, not having seen it since its initial release.

It's a very minor film and some of the cast overact (Steven Keats in particular), bit Kane is lovely and touching. However, her role is really supporting given her screen time.

[quote]R33 "When a Stranger Calls" is so underrated.

How is that hit movie underrated? It’s famous, and even warranted a remake.

by Anonymousreply 36August 31, 2024 11:39 PM

[quote] She has the weirdest voice.

I read somewhere (probably here) that her unique voice was due to the fact that she was deaf during childhood.

I don't find her funny at all. She's too mechanical an actress to be funny. She's certainly nowhere near the comedic brilliance of Kahn, O'Hara or Eileen Brennan.

I love her donuts.
