They gave Glenn a line toward the end of the movie...I have no words. I won't say more so I don't spoil it, suffice it to say, she goes full Linda Blair.
Does she need the paycheck? It's shocking but also hilarious that she did this movie.

A lot of parallels between Andra Day and Janelle Monae, I think. Both talented, successful singers who also happen to be very gifted, natural actresses.

New York Times
Close’s Alberta commands the most outlandish scenes. Sashaying in a peekaboo hot-pink bra and a pair of jeans so ripped they’d burst if she sneezed, Close has a blast seducing her chemotherapy nurse (Omar Epps) and hissing a jaw-dropping zinger calculated to bring down the house.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 31, 2024 10:27 PM |
She really, truly deserves (and should have long ago won) and Oscar. She's given several performances where she was completely robbed. They're just playing in her face at this point.

R41 what year did she give the BEST performance out of all nominees?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 31, 2024 10:36 PM |
r42 You could argue that in 1982, 1987 and 1988 she gave the best performance of the nominees.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 31, 2024 10:38 PM |
R43 I would respectfully disagree, I would contend at least one other actress in each category gave a more impressive performance (not necessarily the winner though). But it's all subjective
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 31, 2024 10:40 PM |
They should have given it to her for The Wife and given Olivia Colman the supporting Oscar. Emma Stone wanting to be in supporting messed that whole year up. She was the lead of The Favourite.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 31, 2024 10:45 PM |
1987 should have been hers. I'm glad for Cher, but Glenn's performance in Fatal Attraction is iconic an is still discussed today.

Just wondering how hard up for the money she is...
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 31, 2024 11:05 PM |
I’m really not sure why this is being seen as a “true departure” for Ms. Close. Sure, she perhaps is a little less trashy in this role as she is in real life, but I really can’t see that much of a difference. She looks and acts this way in real life, for at least the last 30 years or so. Perhaps she actually bathed for this role, which would indeed be a vast departure for Ms. Close.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 31, 2024 11:39 PM |

[QUOTE] Glenn Close telling her daughter she can "smell her nappy pussy"? Sold.
She actually says it to Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor‘s character, not Andra Day’s (who plays Glenn’s daughter).

Bitches- How is the rest of Glenn's (sure to be Oscar nominated) speech not gaining traction?

Does Glenn have a gambling addiction or Beanie Baby collector disease?

by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 1, 2024 12:08 AM |
[QUOTE] She was excellent in "Garp," but the nominations for "The Big Chill" and "The Natural" were puzzling.
I think it was a combination of appearing in some very popular movies back to back (both “Chill” and “The Natural” were big hits) and just being on a roll with the Academy.
She makes the most impression out of the three main female performances in “The Natural” (Barbara Hershey and Kim Basinger being the other two) and gets the real sentimental gut punch at the end when she gives Redford the news that they share a son while he’s on the field.
I honestly think she had her best chance with “Garp.” And obviously she was second to Olivia Colman that year she lost for “The Wife.”
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 1, 2024 12:08 AM |
Yeah out of all her nominations I'd actually say Garp should have won. Jessica Lange win for both Tootsie & Frances because no one was beating Streep for Sophie's Choice
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 1, 2024 12:09 AM |
Her Alex Forrest is one of the greatest performances by an actress in a film. She should've tied with Cher.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 1, 2024 12:11 AM |
Okay- I just finished this-
Sadly, there is a good film in there somewhere.
I really liked the family and the family stuff prior to the 'horror" shit (which is ironic, because I love horror films- let me once against plug the original Speak No Evil!)
The horror shit is trite as fuck. The only parts that work are the "Glenn parts" Every single frame you have seen before, and done better.
Andra is awesome. Glenn is awesome..
The film is so campy that glenn and Andra watch Valley Of The Dolls!
I also loved how Andra's family was "Hollywood Poor"- their house was awesome- even the bathroom was cool- yet, we are supposed to believe that they are poor.
5.5/10 due to the performances and the camp. The last 30 minutes utterly sucks- its just not scary.

by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 1, 2024 1:43 AM |
[quote]You could argue that in 1982, 1987 and 1988 she gave the best performance of the nominees.
I would have put her at fourth for Garp. She was not better than Kim Stanley, Lesley Ann warren and Teri Garr. (To say nothing of Karen Black and Lainie Kazan who weren't even nominated)
She was not better than Jodie Foster in The Accused. I would have put her in second that year.
I go back and forth between Cher and her for 87. She's great in Fatal Attraction, but that cheapie ending really stick out like a sore thumb. Had they went with the original ending, she would have deserved it hands down. Cher's work is just great, and the movie is like something Audrey or Katharine Hepburn would have done in the 50's. Just a lovely romance.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 1, 2024 1:52 AM |
At least she's not reduced to having someone fart in her face like Meryl on that TV show she's doing.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 1, 2024 1:54 AM |
They should have just given it to her for "Albert Nobbs" and called it a day. I never saw it, but who did?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 1, 2024 1:55 AM |
Glenn is primarily known as the biggest actor loser for an Oscar. At her age, I can’t imagine she is offered anything good.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 1, 2024 2:00 AM |
Teri Garr should've won that year for Tootsie. She was marvelous.

by Anonymous | reply 81 | September 1, 2024 2:39 AM |
r49 the Academy seems to go by the For Your Consideration advertising. The Favourite advertised Stone and Weisz as supporting and Colman as lead. As the biggest star in the film Stone I assume got first pick where she wanted to be advertised. Lead actress was more competitive so she went supporting.
The only time in recent years the Academy went against the advertising was Kate Winslet in The Reader.

Glenn has a great leading role in the upcoming film adaptation of Tove Jansson's beautiful novel "The Summer Book." If the film is any good, she should be finally getting her Best Actress Oscar for that. At this point, if she gets nominated for Best Actress again, I don't think even a surprise home run performance like Olivia Colman's in "The Favourite" could keep her from winning.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 1, 2024 7:40 PM |

Reversal of Fortune should've concentrated on Claus and Sunny with Dershowitz as a minor character. Having Ron Silver as Dershowitz taking up half the screen time was a mistake. It was all about Glenn and Jeremy Irons, they were both mesmerizing.

R84 😂. I’m betting she is talking about her daughter so she seen it. Glenn’s character in this film reminds me of the grandmother of a childhood buddy in NW DC. People used to say their house was haunted. I feel so ignorant. I should have defended my friend because my high saddity black friends would call them poor white trash just because they were the only white family who refused to move in an all black block. Now that I think back they couldn’t have been poor and they certainly weren’t trash. Everyone on that block owned their own home.

There are tons of roles for actors and actresses in their 70s. Everyone is in the same position now thanks to streaming. The only movies that make money are comic books. This film is the caliber of film everyone is getting offered these days. Television has better roles for everyone.
Glenn is getting her own tv show and has other movies lined up. She’s doing better than those in their 20s and 30s. This film sucks but most films do today. This film has a bunch of Oscar winners in it and Lee Daniels is behind it. It looks good on paper.

The scene with Monique in the hospital was a moment as well.
I'd hate to see Glenn finally win the Oscar for some crap though. Of course it's ridiculous that she doesn't have one when so many lesser performers do, but she's one of the greatest ever.
Yes there were some obvious Oscar bait movies like Paradise Road, The Safety Of Objects and Evening, and she was fantastic in them all, but she's also had fun with roles in smaller films like The Girl With All The Gifts which most people have never heard of.

The movie is pretty creepy but it’s hard to take Glenn’s character seriously. The woman who plays the mom did an excellent job.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | September 2, 2024 5:23 AM |
Is it me or is this just Lee Daniels doing Ryan Murphy, a la American Horror Story? Instead of Jessica Lange playing a sleazy hag it's Glenn Close, who isn't nearly as convincing in such a role.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 2, 2024 6:01 AM |
R137 I don’t really see it. They both deal with horror elements but none of Lange’s characters in a self contained miniseries are like G in this film. They are both aging boomer actresses who at some point were critically acclaimed leading ladies. That’s as far the comparison to me. Furthermore AHS was very much a career revitalization for Lange while G has never not been A list since becoming a leading lady in the late 80s.

I wish Barbra would get out from behind the counter of her Doll Shoppe and surprise her fans with an out there performance like this.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 2, 2024 3:20 PM |
It would be great if Barbra did some more film roles. But she's super old-school and won't do any streaming stuff, she's a MOVIE STAR and will only do theatrical movies. It's a shame, but she's still clinging to all of that "movie stars don't do tv" shit, which is so out of date now.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 2, 2024 3:25 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 152 | September 2, 2024 5:13 PM |
It will be interesting to see how her performance translates during awards season, mainly because, as mentioned in several social media posts, the role Glenn is playing is one very familiar to many black moviegoers but may be foreign to white audiences. The fact that Glenn nailed it works for one group, while the other group may see it as camp or parody. Plus, it's a horror movie that was just okay, except for Glenn's performance.

Barbra is sort of retired now. I think her willingness to perform in any medium is gone, and at this point her persona so overwhelms any role she'd be asked to play that it's hard to see her as anything other than The Barbra Streisand.

Linda Blair got an Oscar nomination for The Exorcist.
Not sure you can call movies on Netflix ‘hits’ but I expect this has been seen by more people than that film about the film or that lesbian swimmer story or that gay composer movie or that gay cowboy story or the film where that nasty woman steals the doll or the one with the Mexican nanny.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | September 3, 2024 9:24 PM |
R197 what does Linda Blair’s nomination have to do with this? The Exorcist was a massive hit both commercially and critically and was a cultural phenomenon. It was the very first film of its kind. It was groundbreaking at the time.
It also received numerous Oscar nominations.

by Anonymous | reply 201 | September 3, 2024 10:26 PM |
I hate to bring race into this, but even though the character is white, many white people will not get or understand the character that Glenn so fully embodied. They'll think it's camp or parody or whatever. Glenn nailed this character, but because it will make some people uncomfortable, she won't get a nomination, and they'll hide behind the fact that it's not a great movie or horror. This is a particular type of character, and not many actresses of Glenn's standing would have taken on this part. This performance could have quickly gone sideways, but it didn't, and she's brilliant.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | September 3, 2024 11:32 PM |
R202 I wouldn’t call Glenn brilliant in it, but she was game for a role like this, and she brought it. 30 years ago she probably would have thrown the script in the trash, but money is money, and I think Glenn loves working, especially for actresses in their 70s when there’s not much decent material for this age range out there. I still hate to see her win for something like this on her 9th nomination, just like winning for the Hillbilly movie. Still wanting her to win for Sunset.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | September 4, 2024 2:08 AM |
R202 you are right on. You’d have to be a specific type of white person from black centered cities like Cleveland, DC, Atlanta, Compton, Baltimore to get it.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | September 4, 2024 2:11 AM |
She'll never win for Sunset because it will never get made. There's no audience, it's a downer, she can't really sing and even if she could, she's thirty year past the character. After Nicole Scherzinger sings it this fall, Glenn's legendary turn will seem like silent film.

R15 They are similar. But to me Andra Day is much more of a vocal powerhouse in the line of Phylis Hyman, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion. Not to diminish Janelle’s voice. She is a competent singer but is more of an Artiste. They are musically opposite. I like Janelle’s music better; Janelle being a very much an alternative type artist. Andra just never broke through for one- that kind of music is dead unless you are Adele and tastes are so fragmented nowadays. I also think Andra is the better actress. I also don’t believe she is gay and Janelle is. Janelle is naturally prettier to me.

I have enjoyed the film, personally. The ending is a bit weak, as if they had run out of money and been forced to rush the conclusion, leaving several ends loose. However, the characters are well developed and I have liked the fact that the social worker's and medical staff's reactions are believable - from the outside, the events could be seen as the product of extreme familial dysfunction, but in reality what is happening is the product of an evil spirit's infestation. The acting is superb, by the way: everyone does a stellar job. It's not an Oscar-worthy film by any stretch of the imagination, but the acting and directing are truly excellent.
As for Glenn, the promotional shots looked really artificial, as if she had been wearing a costume, but once you get to see her on film, everything makes sense and she truly embodies this trashy, rough around the edges, formerly crazy, but ultimately well-meaning woman. She is an excellent actress. By the way, Andra Day and Mo'Nique are also wonderful, and I cannot believe that they aren't superstars.

Someone here has been trying hard to make this movie happen, R269. I posted in one of the other dozens of threads started about it over the weekend that this is a dull movie with almost none of the camp value being claimed here. It does have a few moments, but that's a matter of minutes in a two-hour stretch. The acting is probably the strongest aspect of the movie, which keeps it from camp territory. Glenn's performance is nowhere near as over the top as some would have us believe, her turn as a demon notwithstanding.
