Just Watched "Reality Bites"; First Saw in 1994

I was the same age as the characters and a lot of the storyline rang true to what my friends and I were going through at that time.

But who was Wynona's character kidding with that lame, amateur "documentary?" The MTV-clone actually IMPROVED it!

And Ethan Hawke's character was a major loser.

I have so many opinions about this movie. I was in high school when it came out, so it was a bit aspirational for me, and I loved Winona from many earlier movies.

I personally disagree that the MTV makeover made the docu better, although I know that’s now an unpopular opinion. That kind of amateurish real world footage was really popular at the time, and the handling of the Sammy coming out story was poignant in the “original footage.”

I have a sister a little younger than me, and the Ethan Hawke character was every one of her boyfriends during that period.

I watched it for the first time about a year ago. It felt like it was pandering to youth culture and not a part of it, just like Easy Rider. Winona's character was far too old to be agonizing over which boy she liked.

Great soundtrack.

Question. This movie is 30 years old. When I was a kid in the 70s and watched a movie from the 40s, it was always so DATED. But Reality Bites doesn't look that dated to me; is that because I lived it? Would it look very dated to Gen Zers?

by Anonymousreply 4August 30, 2024 12:23 AM

the young people in these 90s movies always seem so stupid and whiney. They don’t seem to have any real problems.

[quote] Winona's character was far too old to be agonizing over which boy she liked.

I’m assuming you missed every Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts film in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 6August 30, 2024 12:33 AM

R4 It’s the same with music. Glenn Miller seemed a 100 years in the past in the 70s yet 90s music barely feels 15 years old today.

by Anonymousreply 7August 30, 2024 12:36 AM

"Honey, all you have to be by the age of 23 is yourself" seemed like a corny line to me even then.

Rat-faced Ethan Hawke as the main love interest was a huge disappointment.

Hard pass.

Winona was annoying. She peaked in Heathers.

The way Janeane Garofalo says PFLAG has made me laugh for 30 years

by Anonymousreply 10August 31, 2024 12:01 PM

Garofalo is the only good part of this movie.

[Quote]is that because I lived it?

It's because you're OLD. Your parents/grandparents didn't think '40s movies were dated in the '70s. Because they were OLD. Just like you are now. OLD.

by Anonymousreply 12September 1, 2024 6:42 PM

I always hated this movie. Yes, they were all whiny. Plus, they dressed like they were homeless (then again, so did everyone else in the '90s) and looked like they desperately needed showers.

by Anonymousreply 13September 1, 2024 6:44 PM

I love Winona’s character and I think it’s one of her best performances. Natural and endearing. Hawke is good too as the gen z slacker asshole you can’t help but want to fuck. Ben Stiller makes a very likable yuppie. Yeah agreed Garafalo steals the show and Zahn deserves more to work with.

by Anonymousreply 14September 1, 2024 6:49 PM

God I loved that movie. My older sister owned in on VHS so I would watch it often. I was a few years younger than all the characters, but I certainly was familiar with the bougie suburban, rock star wannabe, forced slacker vibe.

Now I want to go watch it so see how it holds up for me!

Evian is naive spelt backwards.

by Anonymousreply 16September 1, 2024 7:17 PM

I saw it the time and enjoyed it a lot and it has one of the best soundtracks ever.

I was never one those college people but the film could easily be made today with slight tweaks to the characters for a tiktok generation.

Naturally Steve Zahn would be non binary coming out to his family who say things like ‘so are you gay? Do you have a boyfriend? Or a Theyfriend?’

I'm "Define irony."

R18, a bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.

by Anonymousreply 19September 3, 2024 10:43 PM

Huh?

by Anonymousreply 20September 3, 2024 10:45 PM

Janeane said she chopped her hair into bangs the night before shooting. She regretted it, and looks back on it as a sort of self-sabotage.
