I love all things grape. Why not ice cream?
Why doesn't grape ice cream exist?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 29, 2024 2:41 AM |
it does in Upstate/WNY.
Not sure anywhere else. It's kind of a weird flavor.

Sounds good!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 28, 2024 7:01 AM |
that's kind of a lame article, to be honest.
but whatever. it still exists.

Grape Ice Cream is a thing, and it's popular in our area. It's sold at Handel's Ice Cream stores. Here's a picture of grape ice cream from their website.
Grape Ice Cream is not sour or tart. It's smooth and delicious.

I wish lemon ice creams were more popular

R6. I remember Hagen Daz did a wonderful lemon sorbet & Cream swirl years ago

I'm going to make avocado ice cream, it should be different.

I like all things grape including grape ice cream, but grape sorbet even more. Did Ben and Jerry’s do a lemon-grape sorbet at some point?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 28, 2024 6:38 PM |
I remember loving a “purple cow” when I was a kid. It’s a vanilla ice cream float using grape juice.

Whyyy would you want to diveshious away from mmmmmaking delishoooos boxes of wiiiiine?

Because that sounds kind of nasty, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 28, 2024 7:07 PM |
Grape is not a "flavor."
That's why it was discovered to be a perfect medium for improvement via wine.
And sugared jams and jellies.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 28, 2024 7:07 PM |
Baskin Robbins used to sell grape ice cream when I was a kid.

I don't know how grape isn't a flavor.
Raspberry is a flavor. Blackberry is a flavor. Blueberry is a flavor.
There are recipes for Concord grape pie and Naples (in the Finger Lakes region of NY) is the Grape Pie Capital of the World.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 28, 2024 7:13 PM |
You could always go suck on a Concord Grape popsicle. I think Welch's still makes their frozen juice bars.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 28, 2024 7:18 PM |
I made a grape pie once with pastry/nut crust. Probably better than fresh cherry pie, which comes out completely bland without almond extract.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 28, 2024 7:24 PM |
What exactly do blueberries taste like? Can someone explain and also let me know their season?
I eat them because they're healthy but I don't taste any sour or sweet or anything. To me, they are the fruit equivalent of plain rice cakes.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 28, 2024 7:30 PM |
They taste like blueberries, for christ's sake! Can you not tell a blueberry from a raspberry from a strawberry, R19??
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 28, 2024 7:34 PM |
And the Snozzberries taste like Snozzberries!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 28, 2024 7:39 PM |
R19, saying they 'taste like blueberries' is not telling me what they taste like. Are they sweet? Sour? A mix of both?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 28, 2024 7:44 PM |
R19, I think blueberries are one of those things that taste way different (better) in the wild vs. commercially grown, like strawberries.
I don't think blueberries, commercially grown, have that much flavor. They're not really tart, they're not very sweet. Blah.
Commercially-grown strawberries can be doctored up to bring out the flavor.

They even discontinued grape Pop Tarts, so there must be some explanation. Consult Cesar Chavez & Dolores Huertes.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 28, 2024 8:00 PM |
Pop Tarts have gone down the shitter (measly fillings, "pastry" tastes dry, like nothing).

My town has a grape jamboree each year where grape pies and ice cream are sold.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 28, 2024 8:12 PM |
Thank you, R23. Like I said, I eat them. I thought maybe I wasn't buying them in season.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 28, 2024 8:47 PM |
Blueberries are rather subtle R28. They increase their flavor when cooked, as jams or pies or compotes. I adore blueberry pie but admit it isn't something I could describe as tasting a specific way, the way that a lemon meringue or squash or peach pie tastes.
Wild or farm-stand blueberries are preferable to supermarket fruit, but that tends to be true across the board.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 28, 2024 9:03 PM |
r19 Honey you need to try Big Blue blueberries. Huge, flavourful and sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 28, 2024 9:25 PM |
R22 They have a sweet and rich flavor with a slight sour tang
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 28, 2024 9:31 PM |
Blueberries are better when they are slightly "soft" and ripe.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 28, 2024 9:36 PM |
Blueberries you find in the wild are so good. They're small, but so flavor-packed. Several years ago I went on an outback camping trip in a Canadian Provincial park and they were part of our daily diet.
Blows away the huge berries you get in the market.

Picture this: blueberry and maple swirl in vanilla ice cream 🤤

To get the most out of supermarket berries, score about 30 of them with a sharp knife and then stir a teaspoonful of sugar into the berries, mixing gently.

I haven’t been to the ice cream shops lately but grape was always on the menu.

I want to find marionberry ice cream. Unfortunately I don't think they sell it in the Midwest..
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 28, 2024 10:27 PM |
I think that's a regional/PNW thing (although we in Northern CA sometimes are able to get Marionberry pie).

Ice cream that tastes like a crackhead mayor? DisGUSTING!!!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 28, 2024 10:46 PM |
So many ice cream flavors have potential. We need more banana ice cream. And grapefruit ice cream. Justice for papaya ice cream. I suppose these are fairly common gelato flavors. Suddenly I feel the urge to visit an authentic gelateria. Woe is me, to yearn for exotic frozen desserts whilst trapped in a suburban desert.

OP, have you ever thought of making grape ice cream yourself? I started making no churn, no machine ice cream about two years ago and array of flavors, including grape. I started with the frozen grape juice they sell at target. Making it is easy to the point of ridiculous, although it does help if you have a decent stand mixer. I’m attaching a link, but there are others. I avoid the recipes that require sweetened condensed milk because that’s what makes you thirsty after you’ve had a nice round of ice cream.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 29, 2024 1:48 AM |
I eat a lot of fresh blueberries in yogurt and on cereal and I’m just happy if they don’t have tough skins. That’s when they’re really tasteless.
Pop tarts have always had measly fillings.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 29, 2024 1:59 AM |
Well, call me old, but Pop Tarts used to be a little plumper with fillings. More icing, as well.

Marcella Hazan has a recipe for black grape gelato in her second cookbook.
It’s truly extraordinary.
I think she meant people to use a black wine grape, but every September, i make it with local concord grapes.
I tried to find it online - if you scroll down through link, you’ll find the recipe.
I highly recommend it.
