What's the best company for insurance (auto, home, renters, etc)?

I'm tired of State Farm and their shit. Apparently, they've been billing me for two insurance policies. The first one got cancelled because I forgot to update my card on file after replacing the card due to a fraudulent charge. I had to pay to restart, what I thought, was only the original policy account. I was told that the original policy account couldn't be restarted and I had to start a new policy account. So, I did.

As it turns out, that wasn't true and they restarted the original policy account and also started a brand new one thereby billing me twice every month (for 2 months). Now, I'm going back and forth trying to get the other charges for the new policy refunded after it was shut down and it's like pulling teeth.

Any DLers with consistently better experiences with another company? I'm over this.

I'm pretty happy with our auto insurance (3 vehicles) with Geico. We have Farmer's for Homeowner's insurance. I know 21st Century dropped me like a hot potato after a bad accident in 2006. None since. If you have a great driving record Wawanesa is good for auto. I qualify for it now, some 18 years later.

by Anonymousreply 1August 27, 2024 6:52 PM

I work at an insurer and it’s not pretty. Especially these mountain and coastal states that everyone fangirls over.

by Anonymousreply 2August 27, 2024 6:55 PM

Auto Club or USAA

by Anonymousreply 3August 27, 2024 6:55 PM

R2 how so? Tell us more.

by Anonymousreply 4August 27, 2024 6:57 PM

Better make sure they'll insure in your particular state. Insurance these days is a shit show. I had problems getting auto coverage recently and I'm in CA.

by Anonymousreply 5August 27, 2024 6:57 PM

R2 unless you are an agent have your own agency, you work *for* an insurer.

Precision in the text is the key to every good policy, FYI.

by Anonymousreply 6August 27, 2024 6:58 PM

I feel your State Farm pain.

by Anonymousreply 7August 27, 2024 6:58 PM

Consult Consumer Reports.

Look into Amica & USAA.

by Anonymousreply 8August 27, 2024 7:02 PM

USAA is only for former or current military members and their spouses.

by Anonymousreply 9August 27, 2024 7:03 PM

Insurance companies are collectively fucking over America this past 18 months.

They're dropping people's coverage left and right for no objective reason. Just - 'you're in a fire zone' - although the whole state of CA would qualify as that and no fires have been within 30 miles of your home.

They need to be investigated because they have increased rates beyond resasonable amounts - we're talking 50-300% increases. Mine was 51% for car insurance only - same car, moved half a mile away. Other price quotes were around the same.

It's collusion and hopefully Kamala will look into it. So sorry they've had to pay out some disaster amounts the past few years - but you're an insurance company, that's what you have to do.

The insurance companies want NO risk - it's insane. They just want to take your money - and in many states, you HAVE to have auto and home insurance. It's illegal not to.

by Anonymousreply 10August 27, 2024 7:05 PM

R4 People build and live in overpriced houses in areas where wildfires or climate change occur more frequently. These are perils that company actually has to pay for.

by Anonymousreply 11August 27, 2024 7:05 PM

Depends on where you live. Some good insurance companies are regional.

by Anonymousreply 12August 27, 2024 7:07 PM

R9 are you a traitor? Sign up!

by Anonymousreply 13August 27, 2024 7:08 PM

R10 poor thing has no clue how insurance companies are regulated in each state, much less in California.

by Anonymousreply 14August 27, 2024 7:09 PM

R5 tells us he’s a shitty driver without saying it. Auto insurance is the easiest insurance coverage to get at decent rates—in CA. You do understand that it is directly regulated by the state?

by Anonymousreply 15August 27, 2024 7:14 PM

r12 I'm in Michigan. We're a no fault state.

by Anonymousreply 16August 27, 2024 7:17 PM

OP, if the insurance company won't return the money from the duplicate policy file a complaint with your state insurance department. Clearly that is their error.

by Anonymousreply 17August 27, 2024 7:17 PM

R12 every single insurer in the US operates on state-by-state basis. Your “regional” understanding is 100% wrong.

by Anonymousreply 18August 27, 2024 7:20 PM

To expand on that:

Every state is regulated by its own Department of Insurance.

Every company is required to file the policies that they sell (along with other related forms) with every state separately, to be reviewed and approved.

I know because I did this work for a number of years.

by Anonymousreply 19August 27, 2024 7:22 PM

R19 the ignorance around here is 🤷🏻‍♂️. Amirite?

by Anonymousreply 20August 27, 2024 7:25 PM

R11 - Except that most wildfires are not caused by the environment - they're caused by utility power lines not being properly maintained, arsonists, and irresponsible people (a famous example is the fire that was generated from a gender reveal celebration).

Hurricanes and flooding - now that's another issue and could have been enforced a LONG time ago. People should have had their home and flood insurance canceled in coastal areas of Florida DECADES ago.

by Anonymousreply 21August 27, 2024 7:26 PM

If you’re a child of a current or former service member who has USAA, you are also eligible to join.

by Anonymousreply 22August 27, 2024 7:27 PM

You say DeSantis, I say Newsom.

Let’s call the whole thing off.

by Anonymousreply 23August 27, 2024 7:30 PM

I always just pick the cheapest auto insurance. Now it’s AAA because of road assistance and dead battery stuff…. But I’ve heard horror stories of their reluctance to pay claims.

by Anonymousreply 24August 27, 2024 7:32 PM

r15 - I am NOT a shitty driver, and I can tell you that Progressive out and out told me they aren't offering policies in CA.

So fuck right off.

by Anonymousreply 25August 27, 2024 7:33 PM

R18 In Boston there's a company, Safety Insurance. I just inquired if it was a national company. "No, Safety Insurance is not a national insurance company. Safety Insurance is a property and casualty insurance provider that operates in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine."

by Anonymousreply 26August 27, 2024 7:37 PM

[quote]Insurance companies are collectively fucking over America this past 18 months.

Kamala’s on it.

by Anonymousreply 27August 27, 2024 7:38 PM

You be you—there are dozens of choices…including Progressive?

R24

In California—at least in my family’s experience (7 different policy holders), AAA has been fair and reasonable in the claims process (premium rates being subject to strong state oversite). They’ve always delivered when there’s been a collision or a comprehensive coverage event.

by Anonymousreply 29August 27, 2024 7:43 PM

I don't know what to tell you, r28. This was late March of this year.

Also, another company (I believe it was Geico) who I'd had insurance with 3 years before wouldn't even let me get to a live agent. It asked for the zip code I was calling about, and when I input it, it had a recorded message saying they weren't offering policies in my area, and then hung up on me.

I was warned by a few people that many insurance companies were backing out of auto policies in CA, so I'm not saying this in some sort of vacuum...it's well-known that it's becoming harder to insure both for auto and home in CA.

by Anonymousreply 30August 27, 2024 7:58 PM

Auto and home being apples and oranges, of course.

You need to do your homework, and show—don’t tell.

by Anonymousreply 31August 27, 2024 8:00 PM

Whatever. I'm not arguing about this anymore. And why would i bother "showing my work" to you idiots claiming what I'm saying is not true? Why would i come here and lie? I was relating my experience, and you can take it or leave it.

Jesus Christ.

I have Geico - 15 years - 2 vehicles. They are GREAT - I had a no-fault mishap w/my 9/yo Truck last December which was totaled. Geico paid the claim (including a 2K towing bill) in full and I had the funds (29K) within 2 weeks after the adjuster finished his process. I bought a new 2023 Honda Ridgeline hoping my premiums wouldn't go up. They did but only about $40.00 due to the newer vehicle. I have my HO insurance through them and had Progressive before switching to Homesite. My house is paid for and I've never had a claim but have a high deductible to keep premium down - $1020.00/annual. I read horror stories about people paying 2-3K per year for car Ins. but that depends on where you live/driving/type of vehicle. I don't drive much and I live in a rural area which I'm sure factor into rates - also your credit rating is a factor in determining rates as well.

I did have State Farm years ago - they kept raising my rates even though I had a sterling driving record and no claims. When I switched to Geico, SF pleaded with me to come back - if they wanted me so bad they should have considered not overcharging me for just being a 'good' client.

I have USAA as well as my other insurance needs.

They seem okay and the increases seem fine too.

by Anonymousreply 36August 27, 2024 9:24 PM

Dealing with multiple insurance issues now.

Our homeowners insurance decided to drop us for no reason whatsoever.

The car insurance doubles every 6 months.

by Anonymousreply 37August 27, 2024 9:55 PM

Bullshit to doubling twice annually. Liar.

by Anonymousreply 38August 27, 2024 10:10 PM

Hmm ... I've had State Farm for decades and they've been good to me.

2nd choice: Hartford. Why? A lady hit my car while my car was parked unattended. Lady miraculously left a note on my car with her name, number, and insurance company, which was Hartford.

I ended up working with Hartford to pay for body work on my car and it was very easy to work with Hartford.

by Anonymousreply 39August 27, 2024 10:16 PM

I just don't understand the car insurance increases. Is it THAT more expensive to repair cars? I know there was a shortage for awhile and cars are getting older on average, but the increases don't make any sense. There aren't more crashes?

The insurance companies got off pretty easily when people stayed home for almost 2 years.

They need to investigate this - and the no more policies in certain states for no reason? What?

by Anonymousreply 40August 28, 2024 4:10 PM

Go to the website of your state’s Dept. of Insurance for guidance. Don’t expect quality replies from this thread. It is a state issue —that is all.

by Anonymousreply 41August 28, 2024 4:16 PM

I guess the folks complaining about certain insurers not being available in California were right. Weird.

by Anonymousreply 42September 4, 2024 2:01 AM

USAA

by Anonymousreply 43September 4, 2024 2:06 AM

Why is it weird r42?! As pointed out repeatedly, insurance is regulated state-by-state. The fact that insurers write policies in some states and not others is completely normal, not weird at all.

by Anonymousreply 44September 4, 2024 2:12 AM

OP, I can’t believe you tried State Farm and their shit! No wonder you’re upset!

by Anonymousreply 45September 4, 2024 2:13 AM

r44 It's not weird. That's the joke.

by Anonymousreply 46September 4, 2024 2:44 AM

r45 It's the masochism. Always gets me in trouble. I swear.

I also, still haven't got my refund. Apparently, when an insurance policy in MI is assigned to a completely different office, even if it's with State Farm, the other office can't see each other's billing system. So, my original policy office can't see the billing ledger for the second policy that was opened in error because it's managed by another office and both offices seem to have communication issues.

by Anonymousreply 47September 4, 2024 2:48 AM

Oh, and now they're threatening to cancel my original policy again because "they didn't receive a payment." Yes, you did. You ding dongs opened another policy and applied the payment to that policy without my knowledge or consent. Figure it out.
