No offense to Ryan but he’s right. Ryan appeals in femininity films like La La Land and Barbie. He’s not box office and The Fall Guy showed he can’t carry a film,

Shame. Ryan Gosling’s a much better actor. Gwen Powell is a teethy Tom Cruise wannabe, except Tom can actually deliver a performance of substance when he puts his mind to it. Glenn is all TEETH!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 27, 2024 9:53 AM |
99.9% of people have never heard of Glen Powell. Hollywood is desperate to create a new male star. It’s not happening.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 27, 2024 4:32 PM |
R11 can you please cite your sources? Because some of the biggest movies recently have had Glen in the cast and he is very well known. Maybe not in Buttscratch, Ohio.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 27, 2024 4:33 PM |
He must have blown the right guy at the right time.
He was the go-to ten-ish years ago for whatever tepid blond slab of beef stand in actor a director might need for their film. Thus Hidden Figures, and that Potato Society film thing.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 27, 2024 4:33 PM |
Powell’s PR and the studios aren’t stupid. They read the comments sections of Daily Mail, Deadline, Datalounge, etc. They’re clearly freaking out at the fact that a lot of the comments are negative despite their massive push and puff pieces. Also, ok his contributions to Anyone But You are arguable but this Twisters shit is getting ridiculous. Nobody went to see Top Gun because of him.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 27, 2024 4:34 PM |
If and when his career finally takes that expected dive, he’ll still be laughing all the way to the bank.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 27, 2024 4:38 PM |
R20 They don’t give a fuck about no online comments. They care about box office and it appears he puts butts in seats.

He's a manwhore.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 27, 2024 4:42 PM |
I sort of understand the appeal. He’s a throwback to the conventional leading man but at the same time not too intimidating to male and female audiences. Still, they couldn’t find somebody more attractive and certainly more talented than him? Nobody puts butts in seats anymore R22.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 27, 2024 4:43 PM |
But does he appeal to homosexuals of which I am not one?

The headwinds are coming for him.

R28 those days aren’t over but they need to have natural charisma. Glenn is clearly on. We can tell his brain is telling his face to smile, smile, smile. We need natural charisma.
If Jacob Elordi wasn’t so far up his own ass, and fixed his teeth, he could have maybe moved into such a spot. Though he’s still too damn tall for many films.
That said, HW just needs to find the right guy. For now this aging blond will have to do.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 27, 2024 5:53 PM |
R1 Not just Fall Guy, several films before Barbie but like other white bros named Ryan Hollywood will keep giving him leading roles until he finally connects unless he just doesn’t before he is 50. And I say this as someone who thinks Gosling is the most talented Ryan and an underrated dramatic actor. But that’s what Hollywood does, when you got the right complexion they just keep throwing you roles no matter times you flop.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 27, 2024 5:57 PM |
I like them both, but Gosling is clearly the better actor. And I wasn't aware that Blade Runner 2049 and Crazy, Stupid Love were chick flicks.

[quote] those days aren’t over
Oh yes they are. The cultural and entertainment landscape has changed remarkably. We'll never see the kind of fame that a Brad Pitt or a Julia Roberts had.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 27, 2024 6:27 PM |
Honey, there will be a star that is famous on social media and in traditional media. First social media stars started getting invited to Hollywood events. Next, they will muscle there way before a camera. One or more of them will end up being a good enough actor to be turn both spheres into an A-list talent.
I'm not saying it'll happen tomorrow or next year, but it's very clear that this is the way things are going. I can see a TikTok star with 800 million views, getting into movies and TV.
Never underestimate the markets ability to create profit. We are just in the baby stages of the social media to Hollywood merger.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 28, 2024 4:27 AM |
All the Glen Powell hype has been validated at this point.
“Anyone But You” was a huge hit.
“Twisters” was a hit in the US. It’s at $250 million at the US box office and is still making money at the theaters even though it’s out for rental right now. It didn’t really do well overseas though.
He strategically hit his marks. He was able to push a romance comedy and then he went all cowboy for “Twisters” and it worked.
He might not be a household name as a tabloid star but anyone who has been to the movies in the last year know who he is.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 28, 2024 4:44 AM |
I'd still much rather look at Powell than Chalamet et al.

And R62 is Glen Powell.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 28, 2024 4:56 AM |
R49 Alden Ehrenreich never had a hit movie.
Glen is not like Charlie Hunnam or Taylor Kitsch or other actors who were put as leading men in big box office movies and flopped.
He was put as a leading man in 2 movies and was a success.
That’s the big difference a lot of people here aren’t understanding.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 28, 2024 5:05 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 76 | August 29, 2024 1:56 AM |
If it’s Powell vs Chalamet, Chalamet has yet to open an original movie. His only 2 hits have been Wonka and Dune.
Powell opened up a rom com and resurrected a forgotten 90s blockbuster.
I’d say Powell is more impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | August 29, 2024 3:32 AM |
R77: Zaslav and company must regret signing that first look deal with him. His first film since signing the deal is with A24. Warners clearly passed on the first project he brought them.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 29, 2024 3:40 AM |
[quote] Powell opened up a rom com and resurrected a forgotten 90s blockbuster.
The rom com "Anyone But You" was a surefire hit, especially because it had such a low budget. It made $220 million worldwide and cost only $25 million (not counting advertising and promotion.)
But "Twisters" supposedly did not even hit breakeven from its theatrical release. It made $358 million worldwide so far, cost $155 million, and has a breakeven of $400 to $500 million. (see link)
[quote]The movie (Twisters) was considered a flop on the international front, having taken in $95.1 million overseas to date, making the total Twisters gross at this point around $339.2 million, with a 72/28-percent split between domestic and international. Appealing to international markets is crucial for a movie of this size, which is why many blockbusters prioritize themes that are universally relevant, and don’t ostracize other cultures.
[quote] Around half of the ticket sales go to the theaters that are distributing the films. Because of this, it is expected that Twisters will have to make around $500 million to break even, and even more than that to draw a profit.
Twisters has made $348 million so far, and so is not in profit territory from its theatrical release. VOD and streaming could change that, but the theatrical box office was a disappointment in relation to its $155 million cost.
So Glen's big profitable hit in which he was the star was "Anyone But You."
by Anonymous | reply 79 | August 29, 2024 8:12 AM |
r79 and I'd say Sydney Sweeney's tits did 50% of the work for the guys. I don't buy that straight men care about Glen Powell. I buy that they like seeing a blond with big tits shake show them off in nice dresses and bikinis. I believe men like action so twisters sell, in the US at least.
He's also old, which has been a running line in that RomCon. Glen will be the handsome older man, with a receding hairline, that is likable but quickly shuffled off to character actor.

by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 29, 2024 3:15 PM |

R85, I don’t think that’s what he’s after. I think he just wants to be a McBongo lite.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | August 29, 2024 4:20 PM |
I like Glen Powell. I think he's handsome and has a great body. I'd do him without complaint.
I also think he's not going to be a huge star. He's second lead material - like David Larrabe in Sabrina or (surprise) Hangman in Maverick.
He can be charming and funny, like Chad in Scream Queens. But, he's just not "compelling" in roles. Fine for Netflix romcoms as lead, but not big budget action star.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | August 29, 2024 4:49 PM |
R80: I also don't buy that straight men care about Chalamet. Hollywood doesn't want to admit it but straight men make up a vast majority of theater audiences. Without straight men going to the movies, there is no Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | August 29, 2024 4:50 PM |
[quote] Powell opened up a rom com and resurrected a forgotten 90s blockbuster.
He resurrected nothing. The CGI tornadoes were the star and the studio, screenwriters and director did the heavy lifting.
You could have cast a bag of flour with a cowboy hat in his role and the film would have performed the same. Maybe better.

They even had a bunch of plants on Tik Tok. I saw a couple of accounts on Tik Tok showed the same clip from the movie with the same music and they swooned over Glen, you could tell it was targeted marketing they could have at least switched it up a bit so it wasn't so obvious.

Glen could have his way with any young lady at Sassafras High School. They used to call him “dreamy” and even “hot stuff.”
