What are your favorite underrated Cher songs?

As in, not the usual suspects like "Believe," "If I Could Turn Back Time," or "Jesse James," but the hidden gems in her extensive catalog. This little Donna Summer-sounding number is one of my faves.

I also loved the Gaga duet and was sad when it didn’t come out.

They’ve tried multiple times to make this a hit - first with original songwriter Bruce Roberts, then later a remix of that version featuring Elton John and Kristine W. on supporting vocals, and finally with Cher. I like Cher’s version best but it still flopped. It’s a fun song not sure why it doesn’t catch on with the public

I really liked her entire not.com.mercial CD that was only available via her website. I don't know if it ever showed up on streaming anywhere

Train of Thought from 1974. I used to love this when I was a kid.

I'm surprised Love On A Rooftop was never a single for Cher. Seems like it would have been a sure hit (though I confess in some ways I like songwriter Desmond Child's version better)

Cher - The Way of Love (The Farewell Tour)

This is a great song first released in 1972, and it was a fairly big hit reaching #7 on the Billboard chart. But it remains somewhat not highly remembered. After all these years and all of Cher's hits, it remains one of my favorites.

Very early and other versions are more famous, but love her rendition of “Alfie.”

Heart of Stone

by Anonymousreply 14August 26, 2024 4:29 PM

Cher's talked about doing a country album for years. But she has occasionally sung country on records and TV. I love this album cut from her "Dark Lady" album, "Just What I've Been Looking For." The album also has an excellent cover of the Irving Berlin standard "What'll I Do?"

I love her version of The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore. (And the episode of the X Files that featured it.)

"Walking in Memphis"

by Anonymousreply 17August 26, 2024 5:12 PM

"Train of Thought" deserves a mention.

by Anonymousreply 18August 26, 2024 5:57 PM

How did she not get cancelled for dressing like an Indian and calling herself a "half-breed?"

by Anonymousreply 19August 26, 2024 6:03 PM

We were very naive back then. Terry Jacks never had another hit after "Seasons in the Sun" because we all believed he had died.

by Anonymousreply 20August 26, 2024 6:05 PM

My favorite is "Living in a House Divided".

Save Up All Your Tears embodies the category, so it gets my vote.

But I will die on the Hell On Wheels hill all by my lonesome.

The last 2 songs on the Take Me Home LP have gut wrenching vocals and always stood out to me as some her best work: It’s Too Late to Love Me Now and My Song (Too Far Gone). I think both were about Greg Allman.

"The First Time," a country-esque tune from Cher's "3614 Jackson Highway" album, one of her best. Cher was 23 and decided to do an album without Sonny in control of production...

5 15 Yes she had talked about doing a country album. She joked she wanted to duet with her longtime friend Merle Haggard but couldn't wrap her mind around Cher and Haggard.

Here is a Merle cover she did.

Walking in Memphis. While the song itself is a cover of Marc Cohn's original, Cher brings a distinct depth and emotion to her version that often gets overlooked. Her rendition combines her unmistakable voice with a soulful interpretation that makes it stand out to me. Cher infuses the song with a sense of journey, and reflection.

I really love that If I could turn back time. I know it’s kinda cheesy pop/rock but it’s something about the melody I fucks with. I discovered it I guess about 20 yrs after its release when I was going through my self acceptance phase and was listening to a lot of adult pop radio. This and George Michael’s Teacher song really spoke to me.

by Anonymousreply 55October 19, 2024 5:56 PM

I really like 'I Hate To Sleep Alone'

by Anonymousreply 56October 19, 2024 6:00 PM

I Parakyze. Produced by John Farrar. Cher was going for an Olivia Newton-John sound like her song Magic. Olivia’s long time producer worked with Cher for the song I Paralyze. The song flopped but it’s still a great song from 1982.

I adore Cher's cover of Walking in Memphis... I love the bit where she sings "he said are you a Christian child? And I said, man I aaahm tonight". It is one of my favourite Cher's although it is a cover.
