Why didn’t she have a bigger career? Did Mare Winningham steal her roles?
She had such an annoyingly nasal voice.

Others filled her niche and she faded away.

We expected such great things from her...

She suffered from discrimination for being a WASP.

Mare couldn't steal a scab off her own horse face.

I saw her in the starry revival of A Delicate Balance with Harris, Grizzard, and Stritch. I thought Hurt was the one weak ish link a role Marian Seldes won her one competitive Tony for it’s the toughest role —wish I’d been around too her do it. Am I right that Hurt has had dementia (Alzheimer’s) and is in memory care. That can end a career! Sad that both she and Seldes both were victims of this hideous disease (my husband has it)

She was unlikeable. Except in Crimes of the Heart. Now she has Alzheimers.

That’s Oscar Nominated Mare, if you please.

Mindy Cohn could have Mare's career. She was originally offered St. Elmo's Fire

BORING

She was a rich man’s Lucy Lee Flippin.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 24, 2024 12:01 AM |
She probably should have stayed on the stage because she didn't have a face the camera loved, poor thing.

A wise Gary Morton called her up when he heard the news and convinced her to turn it down.

Yes she lives in a memory care facility. She is married to film director Paul Schrader and he moved into the care facility to live close to her.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 24, 2024 12:05 AM |
She was born in 1946, while Mare Winningham was born in 1959, so what same roles would they have been up for?

And it’s a good thing he did. She would have stunk up that film big time. Mare was perfect in that role.

Btw for years I thought she was William Hurt's sister rather than his (ex) wife.

She looked like a fifty-year-old who just graduated college alongside a bunch of early twenty somethings.

Stupid cunt stole her husband's name, then divorced him.

Nevertheless, Hurt's bikini pinup poster proved competitive with Farrah Fawcett's.

The late, great Dan Fogelberg's "Run for the Roses" always makes me think of Mare.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 24, 2024 12:38 AM |
Geez, Mare was a mere 2 or 3 years older than most of the cast of St. Elmo's (most of them were 22. Rob Lowe was around 20).

SHE’S a VULGARIAN!!!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 24, 2024 12:42 AM |
Mare and Judd were born in '59, Andrew, Ally, Demi and Emilio were born in '62, Rob was born in '64.

Going from William in his prime to Paul Schrader was quite a trade down.

William Hurt was a giant piece of shit back then.

A well-known rageaholic,. William Hurt struck most of his girlfriends (including Marlee Matlin) like gongs.

I worked with Bill Hurt about 35 years ago. Can't deny what he may have done to wives and girlfriends but I actually found him very mild-mannered and gentle. Then again, I wasn't having sex with him (I'm a gay guy).
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 24, 2024 2:42 AM |
Mare Winningham must have had one of those bad genes if she looked 50 years old when she was 24-25.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 24, 2024 2:26 PM |
Intelligent, underrated actress who had some great turns in Interiors, The World According to Garp, Parents, and From the Journals of Jean Seberg; she knew how to add moody textures to what could have been one-dimensional characters/types. I'm glad that Paul Schrader is with her in that care facility. On some level, she knows he's there.
