Mary Beth Hurt

Why didn’t she have a bigger career? Did Mare Winningham steal her roles?

She had such an annoyingly nasal voice.

by Anonymousreply 1August 23, 2024 11:24 PM

Others filled her niche and she faded away.

by Anonymousreply 2August 23, 2024 11:28 PM

We expected such great things from her...

by Anonymousreply 3August 23, 2024 11:31 PM

She suffered from discrimination for being a WASP.

by Anonymousreply 4August 23, 2024 11:39 PM

Mare couldn't steal a scab off her own horse face.

by Anonymousreply 5August 23, 2024 11:46 PM

I saw her in the starry revival of A Delicate Balance with Harris, Grizzard, and Stritch. I thought Hurt was the one weak ish link a role Marian Seldes won her one competitive Tony for it’s the toughest role —wish I’d been around too her do it. Am I right that Hurt has had dementia (Alzheimer’s) and is in memory care. That can end a career! Sad that both she and Seldes both were victims of this hideous disease (my husband has it)

by Anonymousreply 6August 23, 2024 11:46 PM

She was unlikeable. Except in Crimes of the Heart. Now she has Alzheimers.

That’s Oscar Nominated Mare, if you please.

by Anonymousreply 8August 23, 2024 11:53 PM

Mindy Cohn could have Mare's career. She was originally offered St. Elmo's Fire

by Anonymousreply 9August 23, 2024 11:55 PM

BORING

OP has a knack for choosing snooze

by Anonymousreply 10August 23, 2024 11:55 PM

She was a rich man’s Lucy Lee Flippin.

by Anonymousreply 11August 24, 2024 12:01 AM

She probably should have stayed on the stage because she didn't have a face the camera loved, poor thing.

by Anonymousreply 12August 24, 2024 12:03 AM

A wise Gary Morton called her up when he heard the news and convinced her to turn it down.

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2024 12:04 AM

Yes she lives in a memory care facility. She is married to film director Paul Schrader and he moved into the care facility to live close to her.

by Anonymousreply 14August 24, 2024 12:05 AM

She was born in 1946, while Mare Winningham was born in 1959, so what same roles would they have been up for?

by Anonymousreply 15August 24, 2024 12:05 AM

[quote]A wise Gary Morton called her up when he heard the news and convinced her to turn it down.

And it’s a good thing he did. She would have stunk up that film big time. Mare was perfect in that role.

by Anonymousreply 16August 24, 2024 12:06 AM

Btw for years I thought she was William Hurt's sister rather than his (ex) wife.

by Anonymousreply 17August 24, 2024 12:06 AM

Stupid asshole

by Anonymousreply 18August 24, 2024 12:07 AM

You're a lovely person.

[quote]Mare was perfect in that role.

She looked like a fifty-year-old who just graduated college alongside a bunch of early twenty somethings.

by Anonymousreply 21August 24, 2024 12:15 AM

Stupid cunt stole her husband's name, then divorced him.

by Anonymousreply 22August 24, 2024 12:18 AM

Nevertheless, Hurt's bikini pinup poster proved competitive with Farrah Fawcett's.

by Anonymousreply 23August 24, 2024 12:20 AM

The late, great Dan Fogelberg's "Run for the Roses" always makes me think of Mare.

by Anonymousreply 24August 24, 2024 12:38 AM

Geez, Mare was a mere 2 or 3 years older than most of the cast of St. Elmo's (most of them were 22. Rob Lowe was around 20).

by Anonymousreply 25August 24, 2024 12:41 AM

SHE’S a VULGARIAN!!!

by Anonymousreply 26August 24, 2024 12:42 AM

Mare and Judd were born in '59, Andrew, Ally, Demi and Emilio were born in '62, Rob was born in '64.

by Anonymousreply 27August 24, 2024 12:43 AM

Jesus Christ will you be CAREFUL!

by Anonymousreply 28August 24, 2024 12:50 AM

She eats pussy

by Anonymousreply 29August 24, 2024 12:54 AM

I also confuse her with Molly Ringwald.

by Anonymousreply 30August 24, 2024 12:57 AM

Going from William in his prime to Paul Schrader was quite a trade down.

by Anonymousreply 31August 24, 2024 12:57 AM

William Hurt was a giant piece of shit back then.

by Anonymousreply 32August 24, 2024 1:24 AM

A well-known rageaholic,. William Hurt struck most of his girlfriends (including Marlee Matlin) like gongs.

by Anonymousreply 33August 24, 2024 2:34 AM

I worked with Bill Hurt about 35 years ago. Can't deny what he may have done to wives and girlfriends but I actually found him very mild-mannered and gentle. Then again, I wasn't having sex with him (I'm a gay guy).

by Anonymousreply 34August 24, 2024 2:42 AM

Mare Winningham must have had one of those bad genes if she looked 50 years old when she was 24-25.

by Anonymousreply 35August 24, 2024 2:26 PM

Intelligent, underrated actress who had some great turns in Interiors, The World According to Garp, Parents, and From the Journals of Jean Seberg; she knew how to add moody textures to what could have been one-dimensional characters/types. I'm glad that Paul Schrader is with her in that care facility. On some level, she knows he's there.

by Anonymousreply 36August 24, 2024 2:37 PM

One of Mary Beth's twelve fans.

by Anonymousreply 37August 24, 2024 2:45 PM

Part of the deal for marrying Paul was that Mary had to be in his shitty movies.

by Anonymousreply 38August 24, 2024 2:49 PM

Her photo is under the definition of the word drab in the dictionary.
