Kamala’s outfit and the background behind her were chosen to suggest a judge in a courtroom

This is amongst the most remarkable uses of visual communication I have seen in a campaign.

Wrong branch of government

by Anonymousreply 1August 23, 2024 4:00 AM

Extremely smart.

r1 Independent judiciary is dead anyway, might as well roll with it.

by Anonymousreply 2August 23, 2024 4:05 AM

Yet she was never a judge.

by Anonymousreply 3August 23, 2024 4:07 AM

Good thing we don’t have a DNC thread.

by Anonymousreply 4August 23, 2024 4:07 AM

You’re welcome

No, not a judge, they were trying to suggest a *prosecutor* arguing a case in the courtroom, because that's what she used to do and that's how she sounded.

by Anonymousreply 6August 23, 2024 4:12 AM

Kamala Harris, for the people!

by Anonymousreply 7August 23, 2024 4:14 AM

No sillies. They’re coconut trees behind her.

by Anonymousreply 8August 23, 2024 4:14 AM

Prosecutors wear black robes? Are you from England?

by Anonymousreply 9August 23, 2024 4:21 AM

All rise, just as she rose to the occasion.

by Anonymousreply 10August 23, 2024 4:30 AM

R1, The one that means "Lady Justice is coming for you, Trump."

by Anonymousreply 11August 23, 2024 4:33 AM

R6 than you —you get it

A text from my sister, herself a former Asst. City Atty. and a Deputy D.A.: “I’m a sucker for - for the people - always the best part of being a prosecutor saying those words.”

by Anonymousreply 12August 23, 2024 4:33 AM

R9 no —prosecutors wear navy suits. What don’t you get?

by Anonymousreply 13August 23, 2024 4:35 AM

The tie exposed beyond the suit to the left no doubt intentional, excellent showmanship and fashion moment.

by Anonymousreply 14August 23, 2024 4:35 AM

I thought she looked fat.

by Anonymousreply 15August 23, 2024 4:43 AM

A lot of people don't like prosecutors, they're cops.

Schadenfreude to the other campaign is totally appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 18August 23, 2024 5:14 AM

R16, Why would cops not like prosecutors who are trying to convict the people the cops arrested?

You make no sense.

by Anonymousreply 19August 23, 2024 7:11 PM

He was trying to say that prosecutors are just like cops.

by Anonymousreply 20August 23, 2024 7:21 PM

OP- it was a tweet that said “I’m guessing.”

by Anonymousreply 21August 23, 2024 7:22 PM

Ah, r20. Well, every now and then we all need a refresher in punctuation and/or semantics!

"A lot of people don't like prosecutors; they're like cops."

"A lot of people don't like prosecutors, because they're like cops."

But anyway, who are these "a lot of" who don't want justice served?

Or am I not reading racist code correctly?

by Anonymousreply 22August 23, 2024 7:51 PM

I thought it looked like gold-colored carpet and that carpet on walls is an odd choice. What do I know about semiotics.

by Anonymousreply 23August 23, 2024 8:23 PM

Last night in the DNC thread there was a discussion about how bad many of the lawyers turned politicians were at public speaking. How Kamala’s sister, a Stanford law graduate, had a poor speaking voice. Someone said that law schools, even the top ones, do not provide any speech training. That stunned me. I figured it would be a required class. Kamala has grown so much in confidence and skill. She really did command the stage and the visual of her in that courtroom like setting was powerful. That picture of her grandniece looking up at her? Dang.

But I’m still struck by how many lawyer/pols have an elite education that costs $$$$$ and yet they come across terribly on the microphone. Some of the civilians were better spoken.

by Anonymousreply 24August 23, 2024 8:39 PM

Law schools provide training in clinical classes and moot court competitions. No classes dedicated to speaking. That would be a an expensive use of time considering the tuition.

by Anonymousreply 25August 23, 2024 8:42 PM

I can understand that logic. I guess I’m just surprised, as a blue collar person, who is never around those type of people. In my mind, they’re all slick, gifted orators and wonderful communicators who can command a courtroom or a stage. Not so.

by Anonymousreply 26August 23, 2024 8:56 PM

Why would you be surprised? I practiced law for 34 years without stepping inside a courtroom. That’s what clinical training and moot court do for wannabe litigators or would be criminal lawyers…the rest of us don’t need it for our work.

by Anonymousreply 27August 23, 2024 9:24 PM

Most lawyers don’t appear in court. The ones that do tend to be good speakers and they get training from their mentors. Until recently there was no clinical training at all in law schools. The job-training aspects were learned on the job..

by Anonymousreply 28August 23, 2024 9:25 PM

Speaking on a bare stage in front of 17,000 people is not like anything else. Some can doi better than others.

BTW, Maya Harris’s few minutes were quite effective.

by Anonymousreply 29August 23, 2024 9:26 PM

[quote]Someone said that law schools, even the top ones, do not provide any speech training.

cf. JD Vance, Yale Law grad.

by Anonymousreply 30August 23, 2024 9:35 PM

R6 That's what I was thinking when I watched last night - they did an incredible job getting this subtle message out. (Or as the zoomers and millennials say : They did an AMAAAAAAZING job !)

by Anonymousreply 31August 23, 2024 9:42 PM

On to the debate!

by Anonymousreply 32August 23, 2024 9:48 PM

All the chauvinists, bigots and other Haters are terrified she's going to become the #Metoo President.

by Anonymousreply 33August 23, 2024 9:51 PM

This is why Judge Judy hates her. She’s working her corner. And doing it better.

by Anonymousreply 34August 23, 2024 10:01 PM

Law school teaches future lawyers how to write persuasive arguments, not speak them.

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2024 11:19 PM

Is Trump still pretending he will be at the Sept 10 debate ? After this week, he's certain to cancel.

by Anonymousreply 36August 24, 2024 2:15 AM

[quote] Law school teaches future lawyers how to write persuasive arguments, not speak them.

So she went beyond what law school taught her? Good for her ! That only proves she's a winner on every account.

by Anonymousreply 37August 24, 2024 2:18 AM

The New York Times used to write about female politicians’ outfits. I guess someone decided it’s sexist, as if the fact that men all wear more or less the same thing means we have to pretend women do to. I’d like to know what they had to say about Kamala’s black suit.

by Anonymousreply 38August 24, 2024 1:34 PM

Never mind. I just missed it.

by Anonymousreply 39August 24, 2024 1:35 PM

They say it was navy blue. 🤷🏻‍♂️

“ The suit looked professional. It looked polished. It wasn’t particularly radical. It wasn’t nearly as edgy as the navy Monse suit Michelle Obama wore for her speech on Tuesday. For anyone uncomfortable with the pioneering nature of Ms. Harris’s candidacy, it suggested continuity.”

“The most notable thing about it, aside from its deviation from the recent color rule, was that it came from a French, rather than American, fashion house — albeit one run by a woman in a long chain of women — and that the sleeves were a little too long, so they bunched up around her arms as she spoke. Given its bespoke nature, that seemed like an oversight, but then, the candidate has had to figure out what it means for her to be presidential a bit on the fly, and tailoring was probably pretty far down the list.”

by Anonymousreply 40August 24, 2024 1:39 PM

R35. No, it doesn’t. It teaches you how to think. That’s pretty much it.

[quote] Well, every now and then we all need a refresher in punctuation and/or semantics! "A lot of people don't like prosecutors; they're like cops." "A lot of people don't like prosecutors, because they're like cops."

R22 Kamala Harris is not technically a law enforcement officer, but she was called California's 'Top Cop.' As in:

'Top Cop' Kamala Harris's Record of Policing the Police--New York Times

Kamala Harris was CA’s top cop — but she was on the sidelines of big policy fights--Politico

'Kamala the Cop' Doesn't Sound So Bad in 2024. Jul 23, 2024 — Kamala Harris' past as a prosecutor was seen as a liability during her first presidential run. Not anymore.--Politico

[quote] But anyway, who are these "a lot of" who don't want justice served? Or am I not reading racist code correctly?

From the Politico article:

[quote]Five years ago, as Kamala Harris began her failed bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, The New York Times ran a sharply critical op-ed titled “Kamala Harris Was Not a ‘Progressive Prosecutor.’” The piece put a stain on Harris’ record as a prosecutor in California at a time when the Democratic Party’s base was firmly to the left on criminal justice issues.

[quote] It’s a sign of how dramatically the politics of crime have shifted in the last few years — even within her own party.

[quote] During the 2020 Democratic primary campaign, the vice president treated her time as the former district attorney in San Francisco and attorney general of California as a liability and largely fled from her record in an effort to win over the progressive left. Especially in those pre-pandemic days, “progressive prosecutors,” who sought to blunt the often-harsh impact of the criminal justice system on defendants and their communities, were still ascendant in liberal jurisdictions.

[quote] In the intervening years, rising crime rates during the pandemic and concerns over homelessness and drug addiction have fueled voter anxiety, a political reality Democrats have acknowledged.

[quote] Today, Harris could practically wear the attack as a badge of honor.

So to answer your question "a lot of" the people who don't particularly like tough prosecutors are usually people on the left, people who believe prosecutors are only trying to win cases and get people behind bars, who work closely with the police to protect "law and order" and who feel the criminal justice system unfairly targets minorities, the poor, those without influence or power.

I don’t know how California works, but in the federal government, the Attorney General is in charge of the FBI, the DEA and other federal law enforcement agencies.

[quote] sleeves were a little too long, so they bunched up around her arms as she spoke. Rank sexism. Now do Trump, overlong ties, boxy jackets with too narrow trousers, and high heeled lifts. Don’t forget makeup comparisons.

by Anonymousreply 44August 24, 2024 2:36 PM

No, part of federal law enforcement is under Homeland Security.

by Anonymousreply 45August 24, 2024 2:36 PM

Her famous online nickname was "Kamala the Cop" in 2019-2020 but I guess some people are not on social media much.

by Anonymousreply 46August 24, 2024 2:37 PM

[quote] No, it doesn’t. It teaches you how to think. That’s pretty much it.

And what does a lawyer do with those thoughts? Bake a pie?
