Who was the greatest First Lady?

I'm curious as to not whom you think was your favorite First Lady (mine would be Pat Nixon), but the GREATEST First Lady.

Feel free to camp it up with the obligatory Mamie Eisenhower and Melania jokes.

Michelle..duh. Though she can miss me with that when they go low we go high bullshit. I hate that Frau shit.

by Anonymousreply 1August 21, 2024 1:26 AM

R1. Right on, brotha.

by Anonymousreply 2August 21, 2024 1:41 AM

R2 Lame.

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2024 1:44 AM

Do you mean greatest as an overall person, in which case I’d think Eleanor Roosevelt (who did much more than simply be a First Lady) or the person who best served as First Lady, in which case I’d think Jackie.

by Anonymousreply 4August 21, 2024 1:45 AM

I’m a huge fan, but Jackie Kennedy was a mostly absent First Lady, R4.

by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2024 1:47 AM

Dolly Madison made some great desserts!

by Anonymousreply 6August 21, 2024 1:49 AM

I WILL be on that list some day.

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2024 3:05 AM

Edith Wilson should be among the nominees. She ran the country following Woodrow’s stroke.

by Anonymousreply 8August 21, 2024 3:26 AM

R8 I’ve been running the country for the past 2 years.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2024 3:29 AM

Dolly saving America’s treasures by shoving them in her pantaloons while dashing from the White House fire 🔥 is a study in courage.

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2024 3:32 AM

There were only nine available choices besides "Other," r8. I do not regret leaving Edith Wilson off. The other nine are far more famous.

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2024 3:33 AM

[quote] Michelle..duh.

Why "duh"??? She's not even currently got half of the votes Eleanor Roosevelt received.

Did you just assume whoever you liked had to be everyone else's favorite too?

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2024 3:41 AM

R12. Of course he did. It's Teacake!

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2024 5:17 AM

Eleanor Roosevelt. No contest.

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2024 5:19 AM

Meeeelahnia. She is just the greatest First Lady we ever had. #MAGA #BeBest #MichelleisaTranny

by Anonymousreply 15August 21, 2024 5:20 AM

Rosalyn, she really worked hard.

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2024 5:25 AM

Often overlooked, Lou Hoover was a pretty remarkable individual.

Eleanor, Edith, Dolly.

Eleanor needs no explanation.

Edith helped run the country while Woodrow was ailing.

Dolly helped saved important documents when the White House was burned down in the War of 1812 - plus everyone loved her.

(I love Michelle, Betty, Jackie. But they didn't do much other than be fabulous - nothing wrong with that of course.)

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2024 9:45 AM

Eleanor Roosevelt.

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2024 9:48 AM

Where's DL fave Crazy Mary Todd? And how did she like the play?

by Anonymousreply 20August 21, 2024 9:55 AM

Ahem. OP, I think you forgot someone.

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2024 11:14 AM

I agree with R18's Eleanor, Edith, Dolly.

I don't know where I came across this, but the other thing about Dolly was that because her husband was a relatively shy person, she held White House social gatherings for selected members of Congress, which thereby enabled Madison (as a result of the slightly less formal environment) to be more at ease when discussing policies with them. So essentially Dolly helped bridge the Executive and Legislative branches of government.

And as for Rosalyn, didn't she sometimes sit in on cabinet meetings?

by Anonymousreply 22August 21, 2024 11:33 AM

William Rufus King.

by Anonymousreply 23August 21, 2024 11:33 AM

In My Life…Bette Ford. She was ferociously candid. I remember when she unveiled her facelift , the audible gasps. Then with the words “breast cancer”, her alcoholism. She was a woman of her times. It was like having Norman Lear as our First Lady.

by Anonymousreply 24August 21, 2024 12:30 PM

Just a second - is that NANCY REAGAN I see digging herself out of the grave to join the contest ? Why yes it is ! How dare OP forget her.

Lady Bird Johnson's "capital beautification project turned the national capital into a showcase for the nation. It was intended to improve physical conditions in Washington, D.C. for residents and tourists by planting millions of flowers, many of them on National Park Service land along roadways around the capital. She said, "Where flowers bloom, so does hope."....She was also an advocate of the Head Start program to give children from lower-income families a step up in school readiness."

For all his historical greatness, Abraham Lincoln was a disaster when it came to picking partners. His wife & his (second) vice president.

"Aunt Fancy" had already been dead four years before James Buchanan was elected president.

William Rufus King himself was vice-president for about a month in 1853 when he died. He was so sick with tuberculosis that the the senate had to pass a special resolution to allow King to take the oath of office on foreign soil. He'd gone to Cuba for the warmer climate in an attempt to recuperate. But all that big Cuban cock didn't cure him, and he still ended up dying two two days after returning the U.S. Because of this one could say that Miss Nancy had actually been "Second Lady" for a month, before becoming president in 1857.

by Anonymousreply 38August 21, 2024 8:44 PM

With the help from my astrologer, I ran this country and whipped it into shape from 1981-89. Americans never had it so good. No one - and I mean no one - was more hostile to minorities and the oppressed than my Ronnie, thanks to MY policies I hand wrote on the finest Crane's stationery. And you dare to leave me off the list ? Damn you, OP ! Damn you !

by Anonymousreply 39August 22, 2024 12:54 AM

Definitely NOT Lady Bird

Nancy Reagan played a pivotal role in negotiations related to china policy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 41August 22, 2024 2:08 AM

R41. And they bragged about that?

by Anonymousreply 42August 22, 2024 2:16 AM

The Reagans cut out so much money from social welfare programs for the poor (such as the public school lunch program), yet wasted so much money on frivolous things - such as 'new china' for the White House, as the one being used in 1981 (when they got there) was 20 years old. Nancy couldn't serve foreign dignitaries off those plates that Jackie Kennedy picked out !

It begged the question back then - 'Will Nancy be dropping a dollop of ketchup on the new dinner plate, and pass it off as a nutritious vegetable to her foreign dignitary dinner guests ?'

by Anonymousreply 43August 22, 2024 2:41 AM

R43. I appreciate the story. I was born in '81, so the Reagans are a vague memory.

by Anonymousreply 44August 22, 2024 5:43 AM

Greatest? I don't know. Most glamorous, Jackie Kennedy.

by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2024 5:49 AM

R43 I agree with your sentiment, but according to the Kennedy library, Jackie didn't order new china for the White House. She only ordered something for use on Air Force One.

This rundown of the china services has the story of what Jackie used (at the end). She liked the vintage dinnerware.

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2024 6:00 AM

R46 Thanks for the clarification - I just remember Nancy enjoying all the press about 'the new china' she ordered for The White House (i believe the price tag back then was $200 per setting) and in interviews to defend her decision, she kept referring to the current china as 'Jackie Kennedy's' and it was '20 years old'. IIRC, she put it all in storage, after the WH Historical Society let it be known she was actually going to dispose of it.

R44 Nancy had a not-so-hidden rivalry with Jackie upon entering the White House. Naturally, she wanted to outshine Jackie, and wanted Americans to move on from Jackie and welcome her (Nancy) as the new iconic First Lady. Nancy shared her love of fashion and designer clothing, and hired James Galanos and Carolina Herrera to design 'simple yet elegant clothing' for her, in her own shade of red - which they called 'Reagan Red'. As far as she was concerned, Jackie could shove her Oleg Cassini wardrobe and pill box hats up her ass.

by Anonymousreply 47August 22, 2024 1:05 PM

Nancy was the very worst

I know it's hard for many DLers to acknowledge, but she really was a powerful influence on moderating her husband. Particularly when it came to dealing with the then-USSR.

by Anonymousreply 51August 22, 2024 4:21 PM

For the modern era, Melania takes the cake. How fitting that the worst president would have among the worst First Ladies.

by Anonymousreply 52August 22, 2024 4:24 PM

She also commissioned the same artist, Aaron Shikler, to paint her official WH portrait as Jackie did for hers.

[quote]Greatest? I don't know. Most glamorous, Jackie Kennedy.

Jackie has some solid competition in the forward-thinking Grace Coolidge. She was considered the first "modern" First Lady, evidenced in her stunning White House portrait, looking like an elegant Roaring Twenties flapper (she supposedly wanted to bob her hair, but Calvin wouldn't allow it). Mrs. Coolidge's gown, by the way, inspired and hangs in the White House's "Red Room", where the china is displayed
