All this handwringing over the lateness of Biden's speech is just the media looking for negatives. The world is now full of ways to watch and rewatch speeches from last night anytime you want—on your hand-held phone, for heaven's sake. It's not 1972 anymore (and Biden's speech wasn't all that late anyway).

I work on events like this. You back time the show run. Tony Goldwyn, handsome, eloquent, not an emcee. You need someone flex, in the moment. Protect Biden & HC in prime slots. Start at 6pm ET if you must. Let people eat dinner while watching UAW daddy. Build to the historical moments w contingencies. Sizzle reels. Bring out the emcee. Term limits. I mean TIME limits. 3 people intro-ing Biden? Two too many! Bringing out Ashley Biden screamed not seeing Hunter. And many are right. So. Much. Ego.

That said, I challenge anybody to match me for being a couch-potato, political theatre junkie. Hell, once in a while, for a fix, I willingly climb into the tractor beam of whatever obscure, but live, event C-Span may be covering.
So, when I find myself agreeing with r15 and r16, as I do about last night, there's a scheduling issue problem.
I'm speculating that the log-jam has eased, however, and tonight's program will be tighter.

THe Media was just bitching to be bitching. The fact is Chicago is in a different time zone and so when it's 9 PM there it's 10 PM for the rest of the Eastern time zone. And obviously the people who bitched never went to a convention because this is how it is. The opening night is always glitchy and it always has the random committee reports and minor speakers early in the schedule. I Remember one governor getting pissed off because he was assigned a 3 PM speech and there was hardly anyone in the hall, back in 1988 in Atlanta. I worked that convention. And Atlanta traffic is a holy mess. I'm so glad they didn't come here. They should have gone to PA honestly. That race is too close. Tonight will go smoother. HArrison is a good chairman in that he is hardly ever seen but gets a lot done. I wonder if Kamala will pick a new chair when the DNC meets next winter. She ought to leave Jamie alone. If we get the Senate and the House back I would leave him as chair.

I agree this is stupid. Let Biden talk because he’s the current President, but put him on early because he’s 82 and gets sundowning.
And they should have nixed all Clintons and Obamas. The theme is “we’re not going back.” We don’t need all these blasts from the past. Showcase the younger faces from the party.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 20, 2024 4:05 PM |
I’m loving every minute of this convention. It’s not just a TV show. Clips from all the important moments will be shown again many times on many platforms. And time zones are different in the US & around the world. Everyone knows what Biden has to say. Showcasing a bunch of other speakers along with the big names is smart. Let them all contribute to the campaign & the party.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 20, 2024 4:13 PM |
I watched until i couldn't stay awake any longer. Some great speakers. Joe did great. There were moments when I kept thinking "just land the plane, Joe", but he did very well. His daughter came across as a rich cunt but her resume shows she strives to give back. That said, I cannot stand her and if seated next to her at a dinner party, I would have to get drunker than normal and hit my weed pen in the bathroom just to deal with her voice.

Exactly. I'm starting to see a pattern here.
Everything the Democrats do right, you will see the media complaining about. And conversely, you will see them amplifying negative things, like the so-called protesters (paid by Republicans) who were a big NOTHING.
Then you have them cheering for the Republican Convention, like it was the greatest thing ever, with a whole lineup of nobodies. But don't pay attention to that, or the lies, or the lack of any substantial facts given by the speakers, Trump can do no wrong in their eyes.
This is why I stopped watching the mainstream media.
They lick Trump's ass, while constantly criticizing Democrats.
Fuck them.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 20, 2024 5:32 PM |
As the hour dragged on last night and we approached the 11 o'clock hour on the East coast, I said to hubby that the media will no doubt start complaining about the convention running over and he mentioned that it didn't matter because the majority of the people who will see coverage of Biden's speech won't see it on TV. That's why the DNC invited in and credentialed more influencers/podcasters than ever, dedicated space to them right there in front and even on the stage (there was a bank of desks with workstations set up right there stage left), and has rightly decided which asses to kiss upsetting the traditional media ever so. To the traditional media bitching about it all this morning, I say "sucks to be you" after they spent the better part of the last year doing everything they could to hurt the Democrats while turning a blind eye to the obviously worse (by an order of magnitude) problems on the right.
[quote]The Biden White House and his former campaign (essentially the same staff as the current Harris campaign) were deeply critical of the New York Times and other major nonpartisan media organizations over their coverage of the president, his mental faculties, and of Donald Trump, who the campaign believed got unfairly positive coverage from mainstream press.
Now why would the Biden White House feel that way? Just because two candidates appeared on the debate stage and one spouted a firehose of lies nonstop for 90 minutes and the other was slow to respond, got confused, and delivered a lackluster performance and we all know how the coverage went. In short, you wouldn't know that there were two candidates on that stage, just the one battling age-related cognitive decline. But let me be clear because both old men are battling the same issues, but only one pays the price: you would have thought Joe Biden was the only old man running for the office and Donold was... not there. No reporting on the lies that were coming at the rate of about 4 whoppers per speaking minute. Not a single above-the-fold front page story covering Trump's verbal gaffes, misstatements and rambling answers that did not address the questions asked. No, that was exclusively Biden territory.
And the media won. Biden dropped out and it has been delicious watching the media sit there dazed and confused and the Republicans still hunched over their guts after what Shady JD termed "a sucker punch". If there was a consolation prize to be awarded, it should go to Biden: he sacrificed his second term to save democracy from the theocratic fascists [italic]and[/italic] the media. Thank you Joe indeed.
So when the Harris campaign makes the decision to bypass the media and go directly to voters, the holy God-damned [italic]New York Times[/italic] and legacy media writ large should take a step back and ask themselves why and perhaps engage in some critical thinking. But that assumes they're still capable of critical thinking, so there is that.

[quote] Meghan McCain slams whatever 'a--hole' put Joe Biden on DNC stage late at night: 'Disrespectful'
"I can’t stay up this late, we all have lives and kids. God speed to our 81 year old President getting through the speech at this hour," the ex-"View" star said.
Months after admittedly sacrificing a few hours of suffering through Bradley Cooper's Maestro, former View cohost and conservative political commentator Meghan McCain has again taken public her battle with sleepytime as she attempted to soldier through the broadcast before President Joe Biden spoke Monday evening at the Democratic National Convention.
"I’m tapping out - I can’t stay up this late, we all have lives and kids. God speed to our 81 year old President getting through the speech at this hour," McCain, 39, shared on X at exactly 11:00 p.m., prior to Biden's appearance on stage at the DNC in Chicago. Biden's appearance came weeks after he announced that he would not seek re-election in the 2024 presidential race, after repeated calls (including from McCain's prior View colleagues) for him to bow out over concerns about his age.
McCain continued: "Whatever producers did this to him and let it go over this long at this hour is an a--hole and it is disrespectful to Biden."
Approximately 13 minutes prior, at 10:47 p.m., the Meghan McCain War Room sounded an alarm when the controversial figure realized that Biden had yet to appear on the first night of the convention.
"Are they seriously going to put President Biden on at midnight?!?" the daughter of the late Senator John McCain asked, though one user responded to remind her about time zones. "It's only 9 30 in Chicago didn't you say you were going to Bed," the user replied.
Earlier, McCain complained about DNC timing cutting into her night with her children.
"This convention is SO LATE. You guys I’m old and I have toddlers! Who wants to stay up this late?!" McCain wrote.
By 9:07 p.m., McCain had already grown tired of the convention, as she slammed the roster of speakers who'd already spoken during the telecast.
"How did any of these people get elected to anything?!? There is no charisma at all with any of these speakers," said McCain.
In a moment of cheery clarity, McCain praised Vice President Kamala Harris (whom she called "classy and pretty," months after saying Harris is proof that "a woman can't be Vice President) and, apparently, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — both of whom also appeared at Monday night's event.

Political conventions always run long and you know Biden's speech will be endlessly rerun on CNN, etc.
OP must be one of our tiresome Atlanta troll/queen/boosters. Chicago is logistically better. The convention center is away from the Loop and easier to secure/manage than Atlanta's facility, even though delegates have to be bussed in from hotels. The Chicago lakefront is a much better place to be in August than Atlanta.

I went down to Union Park yesterday to check out the state of the protests and video chatted with my brother because he was also curious. I followed them a few blocks and then headed up to Michigan Ave to see what if anything was happening downtown, protest-wise. Nothing there, and frankly, there weren't all that many protesters near the park/convention center. It was your standard fare. No violence, no property damage. They kicked down one portion of the convention center fencing, but the police shooed them off easily and without much fanfare. They ended up going home early last night. There seems to be even fewer protesters today.

The lame stream media needs SOMETHING to report to make Democrats look bad.
They really have nothing else.
And that's why they want Trump in office.
