For all his faults (and indulgences of his stupid son), he's an honorable man & didn't deserve the treatment he received; but his blank faced, shuffling performance confirmed that the Dems did the right thing & replaced him.

Jill and Ashley looked so heart broken.
It must be hard to see your loved one treated like shit by his "friends."
Jill looked especially pissed off.
I have to say, even Joe had an angry look on his face when he came out, but it seems that the crowd made him feel better.

r1 Imagine if that first debate happened only after the DNC, as is usually the case? God is truly on our side.

He deserved the applause and love.
No other Democrat politician could have won 2020 and accomplished what he has. He will be remembered as one of *the best* American presidents who used his time in the White House to help the most people as quickly as he could.
When others are elected (to either one or two terms), the amount he was able to accomplish will be the new benchmark, forever.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 20, 2024 12:51 PM |
^I think history will remember him kindly and it's sad how it's ending for him. I think he'll be viewed as a tragic figure, but I guess it's better than being viewed as someone who inadvertently paved the way for a wannabe dictator

It was a touching tribute to his long career. I’m sure he was gratified by their enthusiastic affection & appreciation.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 20, 2024 4:16 PM |
For most of his career, Biden was just some guy. People liked him but he was not seen as intelligent or important. But the end of his career is astonishing. He defeated Trump, he passed significant legislation, and ended on with genuine nobility.
The second question asked on this day of triumph was about his relationship with Pelosi. Fuck the bitch that asked the question.
It's a valid question, and his answer was NO. He hasn't "spoken to Nancy."
Clearly, he's still pissed. From the interview, President Biden still thinks he could have won.
Which is interesting, because now it really looks like he was pushed out. He wouldn't have left on his own, if he still thought he could win. President Biden stated, "... we were only a few points behind." Those are the words of someone who still had some fight in him.
So not only was the question valid, but it shed some insight into his true feelings.
Joe Biden feels like he was forced out, no matter how you look at it. And that would explain the look on his, Jill's, and the rest of his family's faces at the convention.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 20, 2024 5:10 PM |
If all of the Democrats fought for him like Crockett, AOC, Swalwell, Pete, Harris, and a few others had and as hard as they fought against one another I believe he would have won.
Trump is a flaming shitbox and severely mentally ill. Obviously.

R14 - whether he was "pushed out" or convinced to step away doesn't matter. It was the correct move and the change and shift in momentum and energy that was needed.Time to get over it and catch up with the movement forward that is now emerging.

Make no mistake. He WAS pushed out.
[bold]Asked about those Democrats upset at that manner of Biden’s extraction from atop the November ticket, Pelosi crisply replied, “I just wanted to win this election. So if they’re upset, I’m sorry for them. But the country is very happy.”
As for those still-grumbling dissenters, “That’s their problem,” Pelosi said. “Not mine.”
Had she any plans to visit with Biden, since they’re both in Chicago? “We’ll see. We’ll see,” she said, “We have a lot going.”[/bold]
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 20, 2024 5:49 PM |
Please R1, share whatever it is that you're taking to live so incredibly detached from reality. Biden is a notoriously corrupt crook who played a pivotal role in the passing of NAFTA, the Crime Bill and the creation of the Prison Industrial Complex, the repeal of Glass Steagall, the dismantling of the welfare system and the rise of the Military Industrial Complex. And let's not even mention his close links to the Ukrainian spoils system that he contributed to develop, and from which his family has benefited enormously. Millions of people have died or suffered horribly because of his actions and he deserves to rot in hell. There is NOTHING honorable about him.
His pathetic attempts to read from the teleprompter during the DNC Convention are downright embarrassing, and the fact that he has been forced to endorse Harris after his so-called "friends" have stabbed him in the back in the worst possible way, is DELIGHTFUL. It couldn't have happened to a nicer excuse for a heap of dung.

We speak so much about the differences between Biden and Trump, but 1 particular difference stood out for me last night.
Jill and Ashley Biden were effusive and sincere when they spoke of their love for Joe and their family.
Joe beamed when he spoke of his love for Jill and their family.
No one has ever heard any of the Trumps speak of their love for each other. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that love is a word the Trumps just don’t use. Probably because it’s a word they don’t understand.
Meghan McCain slams whatever 'a--hole' put Joe Biden on DNC stage late at night: 'Disrespectful'
"I can’t stay up this late, we all have lives and kids. God speed to our 81 year old President getting through the speech at this hour," the ex-"View" star said.
Months after admittedly sacrificing a few hours of suffering through Bradley Cooper's Maestro, former View cohost and conservative political commentator Meghan McCain has again taken public her battle with sleepytime as she attempted to soldier through the broadcast before President Joe Biden spoke Monday evening at the Democratic National Convention.
"I’m tapping out - I can’t stay up this late, we all have lives and kids. God speed to our 81 year old President getting through the speech at this hour," McCain, 39, shared on X at exactly 11:00 p.m., prior to Biden's appearance on stage at the DNC in Chicago. Biden's appearance came weeks after he announced that he would not seek re-election in the 2024 presidential race, after repeated calls (including from McCain's prior View colleagues) for him to bow out over concerns about his age.
McCain continued: "Whatever producers did this to him and let it go over this long at this hour is an a--hole and it is disrespectful to Biden."
Approximately 13 minutes prior, at 10:47 p.m., the Meghan McCain War Room sounded an alarm when the controversial figure realized that Biden had yet to appear on the first night of the convention.
"Are they seriously going to put President Biden on at midnight?!?" the daughter of the late Senator John McCain asked, though one user responded to remind her about time zones. "It's only 9 30 in Chicago didn't you say you were going to Bed," the user replied.
Earlier, McCain complained about DNC timing cutting into her night with her children.
"This convention is SO LATE. You guys I’m old and I have toddlers! Who wants to stay up this late?!" McCain wrote.
By 9:07 p.m., McCain had already grown tired of the convention, as she slammed the roster of speakers who'd already spoken during the telecast.
"How did any of these people get elected to anything?!? There is no charisma at all with any of these speakers," said McCain.
In a moment of cheery clarity, McCain praised Vice President Kamala Harris (whom she called "classy and pretty," months after saying Harris is proof that "a woman can't be Vice President) and, apparently, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — both of whom also appeared at Monday night's event.

R23: it's good to familiarize yourself with the full spectrum of American political opinion on the left, center left, and far left (as well as its counterparts on the right). That way, your befuddled mind won't lead you to "Boris/Russian troll farms" every time, simply because you don't like what you're reading and believe a "comrade" on the other end can be the only possible explanation.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 20, 2024 6:17 PM |
he isn't going to be viewed as a tragic figure. He will be viewed as a hero and an example as to how we are supposed to behave. He will be viewed as a selfless human being who saved the democracy in this country. He will probably go down as one of the best Presidents.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 20, 2024 6:23 PM |

Irrespective of your own political leanings, if you're genuinely surprised that a man with a 50-year legislative record in U.S. politics inevitably has his share of detractors (yes, *domestic* ones), you can consider yourself politically unsophisticated, to say the least.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 20, 2024 6:42 PM |
Leave the be, R33. They cannot counter any of the MANY arguments that expose the idols they blindly adore for the degenerate criminals that they are, so they must resort of this sort of infantile behavior in order to invalidate what they don't like to hear. They're pitiful little creatures who fancy themselves intellectuals just because they dislike the equally despicable Donald Trump.
That is a good point, R34. The real problem is that many people in here genuinely believe that attacking anyone who isn't praised by corporate media, makes them enlightened geniuses whose opinions cannot be contested. It's truly sad how everything has become superficial and decayed in the last 40 years, and many people joyfully partake in their own exploitation out of sheer cowardice, because challenging their own beliefs terrifies them.

It surprises me how little exposure some posters who participate in the political threads here seem to have had to a wide cross-section of opinion. Someone like Noam Chomsky--whose mind I respect--is too far left for me, but I recognize his influence when I see it, and I would never automatically assume that a left-of-center poster was Russian. All they're doing is showing their lack of imagination. "Boris" = bovine thinking.
President Biden stated, "... we were only a few points behind." Those are the words of someone who still had some fight in him.
And now they're not a few points behind, but somewhat ahead. The fight will still be agonisingly close, but not insurmountable.
Biden might have had plenty of fight left in his mind, but his words and body became excruciating to watch. The brutal decision was the right one. There was and is too much at stake to retain faith in a decent but manifestly declining old man.

Trump in the past has so terrified some on the left they truly see him as Hitler.. It all started with that silly Resistance stuff as though they were brave fighters against the Nazis. When in reality almost nothing about their lives changed under Trump. That goes along with the Boris thing because supposedly Putin and Trump were genius conspirators. As though Trump is a genius at anything. The Harris campaign seems to get ridicule is better than hysteria. Maybe independent thinking will make a come back and we’ll be rid of the Boris hysterics forever.

R41 Trump is a useful idiot for the power hungry extreme right nefarious factions, domestic and foreign, who have no qualms about abolishing the US democracy and the constitution for power and riches. The only thing that kept Trump's presidency for going to that extreme were all the norms, guardrails and legal restrictions in place. None of that will be a problem during a second Trump term, in part due to the corrupt SCOTUS who basically gave immunity to the presidency for crimes.

Biden is being elevated to warrior status against the Trumpublicans.
