Alain Delon, I've always known him more through his caricature on Les Guignols than his real personality (a generational thing, I suppose). But he truly starred in some great classics of French film noir. In addition to Le Cercle Rouge, there’s Melville’s Le Samourai and Verneuil’s Le Clan des Siciliens, both excellent crime films. During his Italian period, how could we not mention Visconti’s The Leopard. Not to mention he had the looks of a god.

According to IMDB, he made 107 movies in 70 years. One I remember fondly is "The Last Adventure" (1967), an implausible but fun romp in which he grows an alluring beard and takes off his shirt a lot.

He certainly did R15:
“Known for often speaking publicly, Delon has claimed that gay couples shouldn't have the right to have or adopt children and that women should be dealt with in a "macho" attitude that includes "slapping them around". His son even accused him of domestic violence. Furthermore, he declared his sympathies towards the far-right movements in France and his interest in stopping immigration into his country.”

When Delon received an honor at Cannes in 2019, RogerEbert.com wrote this as a counterpoint to the charge that he was always a homophobe:.
[quote] In 1969—when gay-bashing was considered a sport and homosexuals had no rights or protections to speak of—Delon reportedly stated that he had no inclination to sleep with another man, but if he did, it would be nobody's business but his own. That was a spectacularly brave pronouncement for an incandescent international star to make at the time.

I’ve brought up my “encounter” with Mr. Delon here a few times over the years and so now would seem to be an appropriate time to bring it up.
In the summer of 2012 I I wandered into ia downstairs video booth of a shop called Exxpressions on West 53rd between Third and Second. It was early on a Sunday afternoon and nobody was there except for this one man. The door to his booth was open just a bit. His screen was playing a straight porno clip. I got a good look at the man and immediately recognized him as Delon. Shaggy white hair, stocky, exactly as he looked in French magazines I’d browse through at the Borders up on Park and 57th. He was wearing light blue pants and a white short sleeved shirt. His pants were only down just enough for his cock to be out. I went in there and sucked it for a bit and then finished him off with a handjob. As far as I recall he never looked down at me as I did my thing and never even made a sound when he came. We never exchanged a word. As far as he was concerned I was only there to serve a function. Fine with me. He wasn’t in the best of shape and his cock was nothing to write home about but did I care? Fuck no, it was Alain Delon. It was an experience. And that was that.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 18, 2024 10:25 AM |
This is not a photo of his actual face towards the end of his life: Alain Delon looked 25 till the very very bitter end. It was a scary decrepit version of his face on a portrait he was allegedly keeping in a locked room in the attic. I only understood this upon dying as he never let me step into this room ever.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 18, 2024 10:27 AM |
A poignant chapter in this sorrowful familial saga was aired on Thierry Ardisson’s television program, “Tout le monde en parle,” in April 2001. Invited to the show, Ari Boulogne recounted what Alain Delon had said to him at the end of their inaugural meeting. He had conveyed words of an unsettling harshness: “You’re my buddy, you, you’re my buddy. But I’m going to tell you something, you don’t have my eyes, you don’t have my hair,” he had stated, before adding: “You are not my son, you will never be my son. I slept with your mother only once and that’s all.”

He was very handsome and a reasonably good actor, but he was also a despicable human being who was closely associated to the Marseillaise mafia (many career criminals were his lifelong friends) and, in spite of his VERY trashy origins, was a rabid right winger, racist, homophobe and misogynist. He looked great on camera, but neither the arts nor the wider world have lost much of value.

R57, I mean that he came from the very bottom of society (his family had been very poor) and yet, he favoured the very policies implemented by the elites to create inequality, poverty and injustice. Also, he supported the most extreme branches of the Front National, which is supposedly very tough on crime, and many of his closest friends were career criminals. Isn't that an utter and complete incongruence?

He was the first big star to openly defend homosexuality when absolutely no one in the world did. Yes really. Said something like who does it matter who you love? It is on video when he was young and gorgeous. One of his best friends was a handsome gay French movie star. I forget his name but died fairly young. Everyone knew but the public. Would not be surprised if he slept with him. I guess he changed and became super conservative. Probably slept with people like Visconti to get his career into high gear.

R30 Nico knew she was going to be a shit mother and knocked on Alain’s mother’s door and his mother saw that baby and instantly knew it was her son’s child. She knew immediately.
She raised Ari without any doubt. Alain never acknowledged him despite Alain looking more like him than the kids he claimed.
Ari ended up reuniting with Nico when he was a teenager. They bonded over drugs but she ended up kicking the habit and they lived together until she died.
Despite his parents both being bad parents he loved his mother.

And Delon kept that mix of pretty and handsome for 20 years. So did Brad Pitt, and Rob Lowe. Tyrone Power had it, but he ruined it quickly with hard living.

When I was in college I had drinks with Alain Delon, Pierre Cardin and the locally famous proprietor of a infamous hotel in Genève. The propriétaire was trying to convince me join his little harem which included another young man at the table, a ravishing Portuguese tennis hopeful. This topic wasn't discussed at drinks yet I wondered why Delon and Cardin were present. To pass judgment on me? Anyhow, I declined the offer but he was very kind and let me use the hotel's spa and sports facilities for free for several years, and he sometimes fed me. This was the early 80s. Delon wasn't decrepit. I finally did blow the propriétaire one day in the sauna, because he was a very charming old coot and he had an enormous hot cock and giant balls.

It is Alain Delon for Christ sake, relax, stop virtue signaling and checking out if he was on the line re mass immigration, open borders, trans women of color etc
He was probably an asshole like most of big celebrities and great artists are. Look at Hollywood, all the pedophiles and rapist, who are big Dem supporters. You could stop listening to rock music, because all these rockers slept with underage groupies.
At least we have never heard that Delon was abusing kids or raping women.

Sure R205, you are the only one to decide it. But I have the impression that most of you are not guided by your genuine feeling of repugnance towards someone's deeds. I understand that someone is disgusted by MJ and the story of continuous sexual abuse of little children. Or Alice Munro, taking the side of her husband who was abusing her pre teen daughter.
In this case, I think it is due to ideological brainwash and polarization in US. I think that most DLers would not be appalled by worse things than the fact he did not acknowledge the child he had with Nico (it is horrible, I agree).
But the problem here is that he was from different political spectrum. Him being conservative is probably worse to you than all of Weinstein's rape. Thinking about it is bizarre. Part of corporate world is liberal the other is conservative and they are using you as their pawns. People are losing their critical skills.

Two stories about Alain that I remember:
One of his wives (Nathalie?) cheated on him with Eddie Fisher. (According to the autobiography of producer Robert Evans.)
Allegedly, Rock Hudson went to France to track Alain down and add him to the list of his conquests. Returned to America disappointed because :"He has a small dick ."

At the time, Marković had allegedly written a letter to his brother, which stated, "If I get killed, it's 100% the fault of Alain Delon and his godfather Francois Marcantoni"
[quote] He was close to gangsters when young. But, so what,

No we pretty much agree Weinstein was a vile pig. And there was a lot of controversy here in the states about Sinatra's connections to the mob and his rotten behavior in general. It did help him that he was one of the greatest talents the US produced in the 20th Century.
And unlike in France Islam has not spread in the US to the point where police fear to go into their enclaves. I hope it continues and people are not sucked into the fear of being falsely called racists.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | August 19, 2024 7:49 PM |
Here in the US we don't really have Muslim "enclaves", or areas where large numbers of Muslims congregate to live (with the exception of Dearborn and other spots in Michigan). Most Muslims live spread out throughout the country, living alongside non-Muslims, which contributes to their assimilation.

Is there any real prove that he was racist, misogynist and homophobic.
Or is it just because he was conservative and against uncontrolled migration (btw. some scientist think that if the immigration continues in these numbers, since Muslim immigrants have more children, that Islam will prevail in Europe by 2050th or even sooner).
The elites are very sensitive on the matter of immigration (of course, they are always hungry for cheap work force) and if anyone has any doubts on the matter he is soon proclaimed to be worse than Hitler.
Today the word racist has become the most prostituted word and is used for anyone who distances from the mainstream politics. Truckers that protested against Covid measures in Canada were called racist and white supremacist, even though their protest had nothing to do with race, perhaps some truckers were not even white. Most people who are called racist today are not really KKK tier.

It's not just the word "racist" that has been prostituted. You can also include "misogynist" and "transphobe" as well. As we've seen in this thread even a deadman isn't allowed to rest without his past statements and beliefs being dug up but the man is no longer here to defend himself. I completely 100% agree with you R249 about being labeled for stepping away from the mainstream. And you're not just labeled and ostracized. You're also viciously attacked and dragged through the mud first. They're not just satisfied with casting you out. You have to be humiliated and have your reputation ruined as well. I've realized SJW don't want equal treatment, which means no one is treated better than anyone else, but that they want special treatment and exceptions made because they do feel better than everybody else. I remember the radical 60s and 70s, but today's social "movements" are more lazy and self-serving than trying to inspire any real change in society.

R214 Since his bodyguard who was found dead in the dump was Yugoslav thug, the Serbian press was writing about it a lot these days. A journalist from Belgrade investigated this story at the time, he spoke to other Serbian criminals connected with the deceased and had even met the guy before.
Seems like Marković was organizing orgies for French high society, filmed them and later blackmailed the participants. Allegedly, he had filmed the wife of the prime minister (later president) in some compromising entourage. There are allegations that he had blackmailed his employer Delon too, when Delon wanted to get rid of him. There is this anecdote in Serbia which states that Delon had said: when god bites the master, you shoot the dog. It looks like Marković lacked self awareness when he thought that he could intimidate the French elite without being punished. As one lucid Serbian journalist stated it is typical Serbian trait, they have this delusion of grandeur which is not founded in their reality.

Funny fact about Yugoslav thugs, petty criminals and gigolos is the fact that they were the original "refugees" like illegal immigrants from Middle east and Africa are today.
When they came to Paris they applied for the asylum, on the grounds that they were politically persecuted in Tito's Yugoslavia. Of course they were not, they were just dreaming of easy life in the city of light (some of them fled back to their home country in which they were "persecuted" after they had troubles with Corse mafia). There was an older lawyer of Serbian origins that helped them in the legal process and the bribe was involved frequently, because French officials were not that stupid to believe their sad stories. They were involved in petty crime, drugs, thieving, gambling, many of them were gigolos for elder ladies (and I believe more frequently, but unofficially for men).

for decades there eas a small dance hall in geneva for mature ladies to dance with balkans and turks. there was one in laiusanne in hotel chateau d’ouchy as well but I heard it was more Portuguese and Italian gigolo dancers as the vaudois are more provincial and felt more comfortable with known europeans

Isn't it true that Alain was a prostitute before he became an actor?
by Anonymous | reply 265 | August 21, 2024 10:22 PM |
Haven't heard it but wouldn't be surprised. Depardieu admitted to it and said after he got his money he would beat up those creepy old men. Very French.

[quote]How dare you? You don't have my hair, you don't have my eyes, you don't have my face.
Dad, I easily could: they're all sold as parts in catalogues for plastic surgeons who likes to make cat ladies, or as props in joke shops.

I hope that's just a rumor that Alain wanted that to happen to his dog.
If it's true, then he was truly evil!

I am not sure if this is true. Though Alain was a bit of a shady guy, but media likes to vilify him because he was nationalist.

Fun Fact: Alain Delon was the cover boy of the best album of the 1980s, The Smiths ' The Queen Is Dead. The cover is a snapshot of Alain from a scene of the 1965 film, "L'Insoumis" (The Unvanquished).

I love his movies and his acting, he was intense and magnetic onscreen but I'm not going to overlook the fact that he was a huge jerk.

Incredible that he was a huge star in France and internationally, yet, was unrecognizable to American audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | September 2, 2024 9:06 PM |
Delon starred in a few English language films-- The Yellow Rolls Royce, Once a Thief, Girl on a Motorcycle, Concorde: Airport '79-- but didn't really do well in those markets. He was huge in European cinema, and many of those European films became very popular among the artsy-fartsy American cinéastes and influenced future filmmakers.

He did at least one American film, a neo-noir called Once a Thief (1965). It co-stars a young Ann-Margret and they make the most impossibly gorgeous couple. I'm not going to claim it's a classic but I'm quite fond of it.
And he's very good in it but he never became a big crossover star here. I think he just wasn't interested in that and preferred to make films in Europe.

So he was femininely handsome? And French so that was sexy? And he had a career in movies as the femininely handsome French guy.And now he’s dead.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | September 3, 2024 12:14 AM |
He wasn't femininely handsome. But he was a beautiful handsome male. I see where you're coming from though. He had an almost androgynous appeal. Maybe he was too good looking for American audiences. Handsome American movie stars look like mutts next to him.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | September 3, 2024 3:49 AM |
What makes him androgynous? Just wondering
by Anonymous | reply 281 | September 3, 2024 3:59 AM |
Nothing feminine about him. Even as a young maan in Rocco and his brothers he was masculine. He had beautiful features, but that doesn't mean you're feminine.

"Alain Delon Had a Beauty You Could Hardly Bear"
"Forgive me if I talk about Alain Delon’s face for a minute. In truth, it’s hard not to. Certainly, in the early years of his career, that visage was more than a face; it was an existential fact. The feline eyes, the elegant cheekbones, the mouth both delicate and full — Delon was often even prettier than his female co-stars, who themselves weren’t exactly chopped liver.
"Filmmakers and audiences seemed to understand this, and that disruption — the transfer of onscreen physical beauty, and even vulnerability, to the male — created an exciting slipstream of ambiguity...
"..Perhaps Delon welcomed the fact that all his tough-guy posturing tempered the almost-feminine quality of his image. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t particularly interested in hanging on to that image as he grew older, allowing instead the jowls and the wrinkles to settle in naturally and gracefully in later years...."
“...In José Giovanni’s Two Men in Town (1973), he plays an ex-con who is rehabilitated and mentored by a prison counselor played by Jean Gabin as he enters the real world and tries to make an honest living. Have you seen his eyes?” a prison official asks Gabin early in the film, noting that all he sees in the Delon character’s face is “hatred and contempt.” “Yes, but there’s tenderness there as well,” Gabin responds. It’s hard not to feel as though the whole exchange symbolizes the effect of Delon’s presence, the sense that, in it, you can simultaneously read both cruelty and vulnerability — and the further sense that if both of these forces can exist in the same face, then maybe they’re not so different after all."

When my partner and I first met, he had a large print of this odious man in his apartment. When we decided to move in together, I insisted he get rid of it. Delon was such a prick.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | September 3, 2024 10:07 PM |
I know Delon was really a jerk the way he treated people but he was a genuinely wonderful actor. I can even forgive Sinatra. But as much as I've loved his performances in movies from when I was a boy in Disney films and then seeing as an adult his great performance in The Westerner Walter Brennan's behavior is hard to get beyond. Much like I believe it was Eugene Palette who was marvelous in comedies. It's hard to look at him in the same way despite his wonderful playing with Stanwyck in The Lady Eve.

Jean Claude Brialy was the homosexual actor. A big star in French cinema at the end of the 50s through the 60s. He and Delon were very good friends. Handsome and liked by everyone he worked with.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | September 9, 2024 11:50 AM |
I’d take Brialy over Delon. Brialy was almost like the Roddy McDowell of French cinema. Like r289 said, he was gay, handsome and friends with and liked by nearly every major French celebrity in film and music.

I always preferred Belmondo looks-wise, but AD's death prompted me to starting watching all his early films, and now I get it. It's that beautiful face combined with his masculine, slightly asshole, vibe. The director of "Mélodie en sous-sol" films him from all possible angles and in all kinds of outfits--he's always gorgeous.
His backstory adds to the charisma--fobbed off by his parents, doing military service in a combat zone, hanging around the seedy parts of Paris getting by on his looks and then being put in films.
As for the unacknowledged son--he actually looked just like Nico. And what a weird twist that AD's mom raised that kid when she didn't raise her own son.
