Which discontinued/limited food items do you miss the most?

My number one has to be Blue Bunny Holi-doodle ice cream! I demolished so many of these containers in the short time it was available. I haven’t found any sugar cookie ice cream that has come close. Blue Bell’s Christmas Cookies was decent, but still not the same. I think it did come back a few years ago, but only in select areas.

You dumb piece of shit

by Anonymousreply 1August 18, 2024 12:49 AM

I'm so pissed off that the majority of the cookie section in the grocery store now is some variation of Oreo or Chips Ahoy, it's ridiculous! Bring back Archway cookies and Danish Wedding Cookies. All kinds of cookies! We don't need 43 different types of Oreo.

by Anonymousreply 2August 18, 2024 12:50 AM

McDonald's fries when they were cooked in beef fat. Also the fried apple pies.

by Anonymousreply 3August 18, 2024 12:52 AM

This is obscure, but Pepperidge Farm made salad croutons that were absolutely amazing. Perfectly flavored. Perfectly crunchy. Nothing else compares.

by Anonymousreply 4August 18, 2024 12:54 AM

Keebler Fudge Sticks seem to have disappeared very recently. I can't even find the Great Value brand version of them.

by Anonymousreply 5August 18, 2024 12:56 AM

Carr's ginger lemon cookies. Yes, they're still around, but the recipe has changed. Bleh.

I still think about my favorite (now discontinued) Ben & Jerry's flavor, oatmeal cookie chunk. Apparently it is one of the company's most missed flavors. They discontinued it because the supplier that made the cookies went out of business.

Jell-O Pudding Pops were my all time favorite frozen dessert, mixing creamy pudding with a perfect chill that made every bite pure bliss. They were my go-to summer snack and I still remember how much joy they brought me. I wish they’d bring them back so I could relive those sweet memories. Personally I think the Bill Cosby association has stopped them from reissuing Pudding Pops. Just find a new spokesperson.

R15 Oh, honey, Hydrox cookies. Those little gems were the real deal before everyone went crazy for the other brand. They had this perfect balance of crunchy and creamy that was simply divine. I remember popping them in my mouth and thinking, “Now this is how you do a cookie!” They might not have had the same glitzy reputation as their rivals, but darling, Hydrox had a charm all its own that still makes me giddy.

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2024 2:01 AM

A company called Leaf makes Hydrox cookies now. I bought some from Amazon last month. Just checked and they're currently unavailable, but this has happens periodically with them. They taste pretty much the same.

My brain says it was made by Cabot but I think I just think that because Cabot makes salsa grande dip. There used to be a mushroom dip (I believe it was made with sour cream and had in the ingredients anchovy) that was so delicious but disappeared 20 years ago.

Hostess fruit pies used to come in all sorts of flavors - some of them look really good!

by Anonymousreply 35August 18, 2024 2:47 AM

Remember Orbitz? That wild drink with floating, wobbly blobs of fruit flavored goo in it? I tried it at a party and felt like I was drinking a lava lamp. I was fascinated, and by the end of the evening I was pushing it on everyone like it was the elixir of life. When they discontinued it, I felt like the universe took away one of its most delightful oddities. I still miss that fizzy, blob-tastic concoction.

In the mid 1960's in my hometown in Alabama there was an ice cream shop in a shopping center - Dipper Dan. They had flavors that I have never had anywhere else. My sister's favorite was Pink Lemonade, and mine vacillated between Grape and Lemon. They weren't sherbets or sorbets, they were full milk creamy rich ice creams.

After we moved away we used to talk about why no one else could capture those same flavors.

Back in the 80's my mother would occasionally buy a candy bar called a "parlay". It was made by a chocolate company called Lofts and was a more elegant and delicious version of a Snickers bar - it was nougat with chopped pecans and covered with chocolate. Lofts closed down years ago.

I seriously miss the sandwich restaurants called Blimpie's. I only ever got their "Blimpie (BB) Best" sandwich and it was so good. Sadly, all of the Blimpie's in NYC closed down and disgusting Subway has nothing that even comes close. In desperation, I went to Goldbelly and ordered a sandwich that seemed to be very close to my beloved BB. I wasted $45 on something that was not a substitute.

Katydids. My grandmother used to have them all the time. Last time I looked, they were still available but only if you are selling them for a charity, like a church. They are the most delicious version of pecan turtles and they are covered in real dark chocolate.

Salted Nut Roll - candy bar that's very similar to a Payday bar but the SNR had white nougat inside the nut roll.

Milkshake bars - very similar to a 3 Muskeeters but they were somehow better. Mom would buy them and we'd put them in the freezer.

Once upon a time when my family was very poor, Aldi sold a turkey meatloaf which we referred to as turkey spam. The square loaf was swimming in a thyme-heavy gravy that was mostly salt.

Kozy Shack butterscotch pudding. Butterscotch items in general seem harder to find over the last several years. Too bad. It's one of the flavors that reminds me of childhood.

R106, I remember that! I haven't seen it in many decades. I used to like it. Now, I don't know. I wonder if you could imitate it by mixing sweet relish into Underwood Deviled Ham. That doesn't sound very appetizing, I'm afraid.

Or you could buy a bunch of P&P loaf - which is also hard to find but available at some supermarket deli counters - and grind it to a paste in a food processor.

Speaking of P&P, I haven't seen or heard of olive loaf in a while. Equally tasty. Is it still around?

This is a random one, but does anyone remember Campbell's Golden Corn soup? It was around when I was a kid in the early 90s. My family used to get it all the time and I recall it having a wonderful, rich flavor. I think it was discontinued when I was still a teenager -- mid/late 90s.
