Humiliation for Putin as Over 100 Troops Raise White Flag on Russian Soil

Ukrainian forces captured over 100 Russian troops in the largest single surrender since the start of the war two and a half years ago, according to multiple reports.

The latest victory is part of a surprise incursion launched by Ukraine into Russian territory earlier this month. The surrender will not please Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was already visibly rattled during a testy televised meeting with officials earlier this week.

The Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda posted a video on X Thursday, which it said came from a source at the country’s Security Service, showing dozens of Russian soldiers lying with their hands at their heads after surrender.

The Telegram channel for I Want to Live, a hotline for Russian soldiers who want to surrender run by the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, which also posted the video, added multiple pictures of “the largest one-time ‘catch’ since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.”

Officials confirmed to the Ukrainian newspaper and Bloomberg News that the men, 102 total, were captured at a large underground facility in Kursk Oblast, the Russian region where Ukraine launched its surprise incursion on August 6. They were said to be heavily stocked with ammunition and supplies, while the bunker was outfitted with a dining hall, armory, and bathhouse.

Ukraine's incursion has set Russia on edge and rattled its tyrannical leader. In a heated, televised meeting with top officials on Monday, Putin angrily blamed the West—“fighting with the hands of Ukrainians—over the loss of Russian territory and, in a tacit admission that it has failed to do so, insisted his country’s military must “ensure the reliable protection of the state border.”

The Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday that Ukraine has taken control of around square miles of Russian territory and over 82 combined villages and towns. He delivered the news in a video briefing, excerpts of which were posted on Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel.

In a video address, also published to his Telegram channel on Wednesday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine set up a military command post in the Kursk town of Sudzha, home to an important Russian natural gas measuring station that connects to Europe.

On top of capturing hundreds of soldiers and seizing territory, Ukraine’s surprise incursion has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians and represents the most significant attack on Russia since World War II.

Russians deserve to be humiliated like this.

Fuck them for their interference in our elections.

Now let them suffer.

President Xi must be intrigued.

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2024 2:53 PM

I’m still very suspicious that this attack is a diversion meant to draw Russian troops from the main warzone. The Russians seem to agree because they are not shifting the main armoured divisions from the present positions in Ukraine.

But they are throwing garbage at the Ukrainians in Kursk O, and it’s getting shredded. These troops are massively equipped with drones and know how to use them. It’s a terrifying new dimension of warfare and the Ukrainians have become THE experts on it. They create a Zone of Death where every rifleman can be seen, AND targeted, for several miles from the location of Ukrainian units.

The dilemma for the Russians is excruciating. If they don’t pull real units out of Ukraine, the UAF can just continue to rampage at will deep inside Russia. If they DO pull units out, the suspicion is the REAL UAF thrust will attack toward Crimea. They’ve been degrading Crimea for months now and retaking that is a major goal of Zelenskyy.

[quote]n a prison basement in northeastern dozens of young Russian soldiers are being kept as prisoners of war. They were captured during recent fighting between Russia and Ukraine, and they are not seasoned veterans but young recruits. They were part of the Russian force that was unexpectedly thrust into combat following Ukrainians incursion into Russia's Kursk region.

[quote]Many of the captives are conscripts serving their mandatory one-year military service, and were not anticipated to see combat, according to Ziare. Their capture poses a significant challenge for the Kremlin and tests Ukraine’s ability to handle a large number of Russian POWs, who could be valuable in future negotiations.

[quote]President Vladimir Putin had assured that recruits would not be sent into combat. Despite this, some conscripts found themselves in Ukraine. Most recruits were stationed along Russia's western border, with the expectation that they would not face direct combat.

[quote]One captured soldier, Nikolai, 22, expressed frustration, stating: "We didn’t want to fight in any way." He described how recruits were promised they would not participate in hostilities.

[quote]Ukrainian officials allowed a small group of journalists, including Washington Post reporters, to visit the prison. During this visit, prisoners reported receiving good treatment and medical care, though some had sustained injuries before capture. Families of the captured soldiers have petitioned President Putin, accusing Chechen forces of abandoning these young recruits, some of whom had not completed their basic training.

I have an uneasy feeling about a dirty bomb as he panics.

What is the strategic advantage of invading Russia? Surely the Ukranian army can't hold the territory forever and surely Putin still has a more formidable arsenal?

I don't get what Ukraine is trying to achieve here because the conventional outcomes don't seem likely. But I am no military strategist and wish 'em all the luck in the world. Also, it's kind of hilarious, but I'm not sure Sun Tzu wrote about hilarity.

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2024 6:40 PM

If Ukraine manages to capture Kursk, the city, that would be an incredible blow to the already dwindling morale of the Russians.

I am in awe of this turnaround, it’s been incredibly well-executed and I do expect the Ukrainians to eventually take back Crimea.

Wonderful that the war is now brought onto Russian soil. Make them tremble with fear!

by Anonymousreply 22August 21, 2024 7:57 PM

Looks like the Ukrainian incursion caught Putin flatfooted. You know it's got to be tough for Ol' Vlad these days. Always having to watch his step in fear of assassination by window, being concerned someone in his inner-circle will turn on him and now there's foreigners on Russian soil for the first time since WWII. He's probably throwing Trump-level tantrums by now.

by Anonymousreply 23August 21, 2024 8:51 PM

R10, the attack on Russia shows Putin that he’s still surrounded by numbskulls who don’t know anything and that Ukraine now has increased firepower from its allies. That makes it likelier that Putin will understand the war can’t be won.

Allegedly, there were fields along the Russian border that had signs with landmine warnings—except there were no landmines. It was just. . . signs. Potemkin landmines, as it were.

"A visibly aged Putin kissing the Quran and handed over by Kadyrov is one of the latest signs of how much the Russian leader has declined in influence. And I'm not even pointing out that this so-called "crusader of christianity" made knee fall in front of Muslim warlord. That is pure politics. What I mean is that Kadyrov and Putin understand the situation that if one of them falls, the other one follows, instantaneously.

Putin has virtually no friends in Russia. He has only those he can bribe or strong-arm him to follow. Kadyrov is one of few perhaps even the only one, where he does not need to do that, because Kadyrov himself will find himself 6 feet under or naked upside down from the next pole when Putin falls. This unholy alliance is the last of Putin's trump card in domestic policy. Not the Russian army, not even the FSB, but a Chechnyan whose father fought against the Russian army and then betrayed his homeland to switch sides to Russia.

Putin is dying a slow death, which is well-reflected by his physical appearance. One year ago, Prigozhin betrayed him and staged an uprising which was only averted, because Prigozhin was a fool. The next one, who will challenge Putin, won't be that naive. The list of potential candidates to betray Putin is getting larger day by day and you can see from the Russian regime commentators' voices which are getting shakier by the day. They can feel that the wind is changing not in their favor. At one point the whole system Putin will capsize.

This and only this was the reason for Putin to travel to Chechnya. He is putting all his remaining eggs in this last basket. He cannot comment on Kursk because the war is going bad. Nothing what happens in Pokrovsk, Toretsk or anywhere else, where Russian meat waves are slowly but certainly bleeding the Russian army to death, can outbalance this embarrassment, and worst for them is that everyone in Russia can see this."

"Another major defeat for Putin and Russia:

The strategic Russian pipeline project "Power of Siberia 2" has been effectively stopped, indefinitely. The government Mongolia announced their strategic economic plans for the years 2024-2028, in which "Power of Siberia 2" has been completely left out. Mongolia is the vital transit country for this pipeline project. Therefore, it is unlikely that this Russian pipeline project will be finished any time soon, if ever.

This news is entirely suppressed in Russia and with good reason. Power of Siberia 2, which was supposed to connect the Jamal gas fields with China, was Putin's attempt to balance out the losses Russia sustained from the destruction of Nordstream 1 and 2, as well as the major losses in gas revenues in Europe. It is making an already difficult situation for Gazprom worse. According to Harvard-Experten Craig Kennedy Gazprom is already $82 billion in debts.

News like this are very good indicators how Russia's economy and political influence has deteriorated since the full-scale war against Ukraine 2.5 years ago."

"The creator of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested at Le Bourget airport, where he arrived from Azerbaijan. This was reported by the French news channel LCI.

Durov was shown a search warrant issued by the OFMIN (small office) of the national department of judicial police of France on the basis of a preliminary investigation.

According to the French TV channel TF1, the warrant against the founder of Telegram was issued because Durov did not cooperate with the French security forces, which makes him an accomplice to drug trafficking and other serious crimes.

Durov was in Baku at the same time as Putin, but there was no information about their meeting.

Durov is also to be questioned due to suspicions of wiretapping Macron's manager through the secure network Telegram.

Amid news of the arrest of Pavel Durov in France, shares of the TON cryptocurrency used in Telegram began to fall sharply.

Pavel Durov faces up to 20 years in prison. He will soon appear in court as a French citizen."

"After Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested, Russian social media share the following thoughts, rumors and panic moods:

◾️Allegedly, several days ago Durov asked for a meeting with Putin in Baku and was refused.

◾️Telegram is the main information network, communications tool and Russian means of influencing the world. Telegram is the number one messenger app in Ukraine. It has 300 million users in India and is leading in South and Latin America. Russia's influence on the world might be lost.

◾️Durov's arrest might be similar in impact to the British breaking the Enigma code during WW2: Telegram is the only messenger of the Russian army. All their messages might get into the hands of the West.

◾️Despite Russia's claims that it would quickly create a new messenger, that is impossible. Those who say that are either idiots or simply want to steal money.

◾️Durov is blamed for not cooperating with the French police in drug trafficking, pedophilia and other serious crimes. Within the next few months, many Russian citizens can be blamed for the same crimes after getting access to encrypted messages.

◾️Russia's spy network in Europe may be exposed."

Bibi is also getting the business, R43. 1/2

"Netanyahu had a very unpleasant and somewhat shocking meeting with the hostage families. It was recorded and leaked to the press. Sara Netanyahu also joined the fray with some controversial comments. Netanyahu and wife did not win any points for this. Here are the exchanges that made headlines in Israel.

Released Hostage: "We went through difficult things. I was beaten. I was tortured. More cruelty than we experienced is impossible in my opinion, Enough. I can't stand that he is suffering there. I can't stand that the women are suffering."

Son of a hostage: Do you understand that there are girls being raped now? Because Biden understands that."

Netanyahu: "Hearing your stories is shocking. I went through a captivity training session. I was beaten, but it didn't affect me much, because I knew it was a drill. So I get hit, it hurts, I knew it was a drill. That I am not really in danger and that adds to the suffering."

Hostage daughter: " You can be remembered as the one who led the country to a better place or as the one who wreaked havoc here. You are the prime minister and you are responsible for the abductees, not Hamas and not anyone else. You are supposed to reach a deal that will bring all the abductees.”

Netanyahu: "What’re you proposing that I do?” Netanyahu responded.

Hostage daughter:“I’m proposing that you sign a deal that will bring the hostages home. There’s a deal on the table!”

Netanyahu: "What deal? Which deal? Whoever told you that there was a [hostage-ceasefire] deal on the table and that we didn’t take it for this reason or that reason, for personal reasons, it’s just a lie.”

"There are many things we want and they’re hard to get. For example, I’d like to walk to Italy on foot in a straight line… so if that’s what we need to do, it means drying up the ocean, so ‘let’s dry up the ocean, what’s the problem?’"

Released hostage: "I didn't get an apology from you."

Another released hostage: "And you didn't take the blame."

Sara Netanyahu: "There is also the army."

Released hostage:" Who is the leader? He runs the army. He is responsible."

Sara Netanyahu: "They don't tell him anything. How is he supposed to know?"

She then complained about being demonized by the media for being Netanyahu's wife: “I was Sara Ben Arzi, and no one told lies about me. I lived a normal life."

Released hostage: “I also lived a normal life until I was kidnapped with my partner.”

The amazing ability of the Netanyahu's to make the suffering of the hostages about themselves and deny that there is a deal on the table is really staggering. No wonder the trust between the hostage families and the Prime Minister is at such a low ebb."

The Chinese government has never been 'all in' on Russia's war in Ukraine. I could totally see them patiently waiting for the right moment when Putin appears weak and unable to sustain a war on two fronts to act. Plus, he practically gave them a playbook on how to do it. Accuse the Russian government of persecuting certain groups in areas near China or claim neo-Nazis have taken over to launch a "special military operation" to "liberate" those areas from tyranny. Then hold fake elections that show overwhelming support for annexation by China, which would be condemned internationally and wouldn't be deterred by sanctions or isolation.

If the small elite that benefits from him staying in power (these include heads of Security Services FSB, the Defense Ministry, Intelligence) feel the pinch economically or if their status is threatened, he'll be removed.
