Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars new song “Die With a Smile”

I’m digging it.

by Anonymousreply 73October 1, 2024 1:53 PM

I really like to like it but idk. Something is missing. Not catchy nor memorable enough? I love them both but I felt neither gave it their best shot.. I hope I'm in the minority.

by Anonymousreply 1August 16, 2024 4:36 AM

It's not very catchy. I was distracted by her cigarette. She's getting too actressy with her props.

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2024 4:53 AM

Yeah they both are capable of irresistible earworms, and this one is underwhelming.

by Anonymousreply 3August 16, 2024 4:55 AM

I dig it. I really dig it. Good ol fashion musicianship, well written lyrics with a hook that isn’t overly “meme” worthy.

by Anonymousreply 4August 16, 2024 5:00 AM

It’s like a whole generation of people who have been affected by low brow top 40 and Single Ladies Put a Ring on it, even though the latter is a brilliant catchy pop song. A song can be great without being catchy.

by Anonymousreply 5August 16, 2024 5:02 AM

What's with her Dolly wig?

by Anonymousreply 6August 16, 2024 5:04 AM

Looks like it was made for the Joker soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 7August 16, 2024 5:08 AM

R6 I told you Queen Bey started the trend this year with lionizing the Country/Western aesthetic.

by Anonymousreply 8August 16, 2024 5:09 AM

This song sucks

by Anonymousreply 9August 16, 2024 6:19 AM

It's a very, very well constructed song. Well produced for sure. The melody, in particular, is damn good. Especially the soaring chorus.

It does lack that It Factor thing. Maybe because it's more a Bruno sounding song than a Gaga sounding song (and I prefer Gaga)? But that might change with more listens.

That said, I think it has the potential to be a pretty big hit. There's nothing like this in the top 40 right now. Which could work in its favor.

by Anonymousreply 10August 16, 2024 8:42 AM

Its a grower....but only cos its them that i'll end up hearing it more...if it was 2 unknowns it wouldn't help their careers. But at least its different.

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2024 9:30 AM

Just a reminder that Bruno was born intersex.

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2024 10:28 AM

^Where did u hear that?

by Anonymousreply 13August 16, 2024 2:01 PM

Corny

by Anonymousreply 14August 16, 2024 2:02 PM

It's really good and they will win the GRAMMY for best duo...if there is a category for that.

by Anonymousreply 15August 16, 2024 2:09 PM

Do they promise to follow through on it? ☠️☠️

by Anonymousreply 16August 16, 2024 2:46 PM

Gaga looks like Amy Winehouse discovered (and tested!) Clairol Herbal Essence, Old Tammy Faye honey blonde (8G), at the tail end of a crack bender, while shopping for a box of wine at 4AM to take the edge off.

by Anonymousreply 17August 16, 2024 3:11 PM

It's very meh. Not bad, but not good. Bruno's music always feels corny.

by Anonymousreply 18August 16, 2024 3:32 PM

Garbage.

by Anonymousreply 19August 16, 2024 3:47 PM

Boring

by Anonymousreply 20August 16, 2024 4:04 PM

I hate the cigarette. You could have styled this without it.

by Anonymousreply 21August 16, 2024 4:05 PM

R21 agreed that was weird.

by Anonymousreply 22August 16, 2024 4:20 PM

NYTimes -

a romantic, lightly apocalyptic slow-dance that offers both the opportunity to belt to the rafters. Despite the music video’s George & Tammy cosplay, there’s not much of that ever-so-trendy twang to be heard on the actual track. Instead, “Die With a Smile” is a lush, soft-rock torch song accentuated by weightless, trebly guitar. “If the world was ending, I’d wanna be next to you,” they sing together on an anthemic chorus, striking the right balance between grit and polish — just two consummate professionals doing their thing.

by Anonymousreply 23August 16, 2024 8:52 PM

R23 I think that's a near perfect review. It's exactly how I feel about the song.

And it's a song that gets better the more you listen to it. At least it has for me so far.

by Anonymousreply 24August 16, 2024 8:56 PM

It's okay. I can tell it will be something I hate in a few months when it's inescapable in every grocery store and Kohl's.

by Anonymousreply 25August 20, 2024 8:59 PM

This song is blowing up. It's everywhere online. Number one on Apple Music. Number three on Spotify. Number one in sales (doubling the number two song). Nearly universal positive reviews.

Sorry Gaga haters, it's looks like a hit.

by Anonymousreply 26August 21, 2024 1:24 AM

She will be winning the Grammy and oscar next year.

by Anonymousreply 27August 21, 2024 1:37 AM

It grows on you. I appreciate the 70's variety show kitsch but the cigarette was hella distracting because of my OCD.

by Anonymousreply 28August 21, 2024 2:09 AM

Is Bruno her new Tony?

by Anonymousreply 29August 21, 2024 3:02 AM

Honestly, I'd be hear for a Bruno/Gaga duet album, R29.

Never would have guessed it, but they sound wonderful together.

by Anonymousreply 30August 21, 2024 3:18 AM

I think watching the movie first, then listening to the song would probably have improved the experience. The mood of that song is pretty unique for a pop song. I am sure they captured something that is in the movie. Once that is apparent the song should make more sense. I like it. But as it was said upthread, it grows on you with repeated listening.

by Anonymousreply 31August 22, 2024 5:43 PM

It’s not good

by Anonymousreply 32August 22, 2024 6:00 PM

It's a stand alone single, R31. At least that's what both Bruno and Gaga have said so far.

It's projected to debut at number three on Billboard. Huge for a non album track with zero promotion and no radio deal. In fact, radio is what hurt it's chances to debut at 1 or 2. Which, again, is crazy for a random single drop.

The reason it charted so high is because people really seem to like it: It's the biggest streaming song in the world right now on Apple Music and I think the biggest on Spotify (might be number two). And it's, by far, the highest selling song in the US.

So the two metrics were the "customer" decides? It's number one. The one metric where "the man" decides? It's still trailing the top songs, but gaining.

by Anonymousreply 33August 22, 2024 6:02 PM

[quote] I really like to like it but idk. Something is missing. Not catchy nor memorable enough? I love them both but I felt neither gave it their best shot.. I hope I'm in the minority.

My initial reaction at first listen in R1. I can now say it has grown on me a lot since then. Btw, I don't understand why this is not supposed to be tied with Joker 2 at all? Or are they keeping that a secret?

by Anonymousreply 34August 23, 2024 3:22 AM

R34 it's apparently a single they wrote together. Just a stand alone.

It has nothing to do with Joker or any album.

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2024 5:13 AM

A black man and a white woman who likes to hangout with Liza Minelli recorded a country song?

That ain’t country and this ain’t Texas.

by Anonymousreply 36August 24, 2024 9:20 AM

Nahh, I'm good.

by Anonymousreply 37August 24, 2024 10:08 AM

They sound great together. I'm not sure it'll be a hit, because it sounds too "adult" to appeal to the biggest audience of downloaders, but it's definitely a good tune.

And I really like the video.

by Anonymousreply 38August 24, 2024 12:16 PM

R13 Well, for starters...

by Anonymousreply 39August 24, 2024 12:18 PM

R39 Is that Anita Baker?

by Anonymousreply 40August 24, 2024 12:26 PM

R33 zero promotion? They have been playing this on the radio like crazy and they made a music video BEFORE its release.

by Anonymousreply 41August 24, 2024 5:52 PM

Is it the costuming, or has The Ga gotten porky?

by Anonymousreply 42August 27, 2024 10:37 PM

Wow! Debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

by Anonymousreply 43August 27, 2024 10:59 PM

I like the slow motion quality of the video. I wonder how fast they had to play the song while Bruno and Gaga lip synched to it in the video.

by Anonymousreply 44August 27, 2024 11:02 PM

R36 what? did I miss something on this thread lol.

by Anonymousreply 45August 27, 2024 11:28 PM

R40 You bitches are randomly hilarious sometimes. Are you saying that because of the fat cheeks and hairstyle.

by Anonymousreply 46August 27, 2024 11:29 PM

I don’t know what it is about Bruno Mars and his high notes, but I can’t stand it. It’s grating to my ears. He seems to always be screaming in every song.

by Anonymousreply 47August 27, 2024 11:34 PM

R43 and the only reason it wasn't number one was that there was no radio deal. It was number one or two (vacillated between both) in streaming and far away number one in sales.

(I don't think either Bruno or Gaga thought it would be such a huge hit right out of the gate, otherwise they would have no doubt paid for a radio deal.)

by Anonymousreply 48August 28, 2024 12:01 AM

Brat. The perfect melancholy late summer bop.

by Anonymousreply 49August 28, 2024 12:11 AM

R36 It's not a country song. The video just has country costuming.

And Bruno Mars isn't black. He's Puerto Rican and Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 50August 28, 2024 12:20 AM

R50 How could forget his Filipino heritage. I mean that’s what he mainly looks like.

by Anonymousreply 51August 28, 2024 12:28 AM

What kind of a stage name is Bruno Mars? It sounds as fake as, well, Lady Gaga.

by Anonymousreply 52August 28, 2024 12:32 AM

R51 His mom is Filipino and Spanish. His father was Puerto Rican and Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 53August 28, 2024 12:32 AM

R53 I know.

by Anonymousreply 54August 28, 2024 12:41 AM

Sounds like a teen garage band. Especially the lyrics. I keep expecting Mrs. Gaga to bring in some lemonade for the kids.

by Anonymousreply 55August 28, 2024 1:06 AM

I like the song. Bruno's and Gaga's vocals are strong and their voices blend well together. The song has great orchestration, too.

A surprising power ballad from an unlikely pairing.

by Anonymousreply 56August 28, 2024 2:16 PM

The song is officially the number one song on the world on Billboard's Global 200.

That's crazy for a random power ballad dropped for no real reason.

by Anonymousreply 57September 3, 2024 9:12 PM

Sure to snag Grammy nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

It really is a terrific song - great lyrics, great instrumentation, great vocals.

by Anonymousreply 58September 22, 2024 8:50 PM

The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Their voices blend together so beautifully.

Good old fashioned pop music with two real musicians.

by Anonymousreply 59September 22, 2024 8:53 PM

It's been the number one streamed song in the world for well over a month.

Gigantic hit for Gaga and Bruno. Might end being one of the biggest for anyone all year.

by Anonymousreply 60September 22, 2024 8:56 PM

So odd that this has no tie in at all with with Joker 2. The title alone seems inspired by the movie. Could easily snag best Oscar song. Maybe it was initially intended but I heard they decided on not having any original song for Joker.

by Anonymousreply 61September 22, 2024 11:33 PM

Did you hear? I'm gonna record a duet with Bruno!

It'll be the highest charting duet of all time!

by Anonymousreply 62September 22, 2024 11:47 PM

R61 apparently it's just a stand alone single. But it does feel like it could be for Joker 2.

However, I just saw the Joker 2 soundtrack list. And Die With a Smile is not on it.

It does have some really cool standards.

by Anonymousreply 63September 23, 2024 1:23 AM

This vocal coach analyzes the song and the incredible vocal abilities of Bruno and Gaga. This guy knows what he's talking about, and he points out why this song is such a masterpiece.

Sounds too manufactured. Not authentic. It doesn't generate any feelings from me.

by Anonymousreply 65October 1, 2024 2:30 AM

That was super interesting R64.

I didn't really care for Die With a Smile at first, but now I love it. It's such a throwback love song. Refreshingly so.

by Anonymousreply 66October 1, 2024 2:34 AM

R65 Manufactured? Nah.

Sabrina Carpenter is manufactured, not Mars and The Ga.

by Anonymousreply 67October 1, 2024 10:30 AM

r1 "I hope I'm in the minority. "

Why would you care?

by Anonymousreply 68October 1, 2024 10:36 AM

r67 Definitely sounds manufactured - the song, that is

by Anonymousreply 69October 1, 2024 10:37 AM

I got sleepy 20 seconds in - sounds boring. I was hoping they'd do something upbeat.

by Anonymousreply 70October 1, 2024 10:44 AM

Lady Ehhh needs someone to have a hit. This is a hit because of Bruno. And ONLY because of him. No one gives a fuck about Lady Try Hard (see her jazz album flop). She cannot have a hit song without someone else on the single. She sucks as a songwriter. Her voice is foghorn try hard and nothing special. All those great “reviews” including the vocal coach is payola as is most of the streaming likely paid for by the movie budget for Joker so she goes into it with a “hit”. She’s such a fucking joke. And ugly. And old.

by Anonymousreply 71October 1, 2024 10:44 AM

Take your sominex, Madge at R71.

by Anonymousreply 72October 1, 2024 11:50 AM

It sounds like an existing Silk Sonic song.
