Courtney Love's portrayal of Althea Flynt in "The People vs. Larry Flynt" (1996)

At the time of its release, many joked that she was basically playing herself. Others seemed to think it was a great performance (especially critics), and Courtney did get a Golden Globe nomination. I do wonder if her portrayal of Althea had a bigger dose of "Courtney" in it in some ways than was true to the person. For example, Althea dons some really edgy, goth-y outfits in the film, especially toward the end—I've never seen any photos that indicate Althea ever dressed this extravagantly. I know Courtney said she spent a lot of time with Larry to try and get a feel for who Althea was as a person. True to Althea or not, I think it was a very good, honest performance.

I remember at the time Courtney was dressing better and improving her image, she may have been dating Edward Norton then.

I thought she was fantastic.

Did this lead to her feud with Madonna, since Courtney was a better actress? And I agree she was brilliant in the role. She was definitely Oscar-worthy.

I found her portrayal reductive.

I always remember her little dialogue about women not needing batteries.

She was basically playing a disgusting version of Sharon Stone’s Casino character.

[quote]I thought she was fantastic.

Absolutely.

And as for the remarks that she was just playing herself - If it were that easy to play a junkie stripper, everybody would be doing it.

She was fantastic in this.

She could star as Faye Dunaway in Blockbuster: Story of a Woman and her Videotape. She’s a dead ringer for 1980s Dorothy Faye.

She was wonderful in this film. As was Milos Forman's direction. I wish more filmmakers took Forman's less conventional approach to biopics.

This is a fun segment of Courtney being interviewed about the film by queen supreme Brian Linehan. It is possibly the most conventional, "girl next-door" I she ever looked Well spoken too. I have always regarded her as extremely intelligent, but sometimes the drug scrambled stream-of-consciousness word vomiting renders her thoughts lost in translation.
