by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 4, 2024 2:15 AM |
I work from home and generally have either the I Love Lucy channel or the Murder She Wrote channel running all day, usually on mute but sometimes I actually engage. I’ve seen every episode numerous times (Lucy moreso by an order of magnitude). It’s just comfort food for me.
On the weekend I will usually tune into the Golden Girls on Hallmark or wherever it airs. I will still actually pay attention to that show for a couple hours even though I’ve seen every episode dozens of times (except maybe the Empty Nest tie-ins).
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 4, 2024 2:18 AM |
I got a phone call from your neighbor, Mrs. DeVries, across the street. She knows you're a little peculiar, but she wanted to make sure nothing was wrong since all that was on your TV screen was a black and white program from 73 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 4, 2024 2:20 AM |
I think you need a break, OP. Take some time out. Maybe you can get tickets to "Over the Teacups."

OP sounds like an addict, r16. If he could tear himself away I’m sure he’d be The Most Happy Fella.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 4, 2024 3:13 AM |
The episodes are all complete and they look good, unlike the episodes in syndication. But damn, hearing Ricky (Desi) sing, you realize he had nerve saying Lucy had no talent. The best episode was Flapper Follies of 1927 with the ancient showgirls ala Follies and that was totally Lucy's doing. People must have been desperate for entertainment if they like Babalu. They always cut it out of syndication and when you hear it, you understand why.

The Quiz Show
Don Juan is Shelved
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 4, 2024 4:52 PM |
I can't watch that show. I was always frightened about how much trouble Lucy would be in when Ricky got home. It didn't help that my folks physically resembled them, except my dad didn't work at a club, he worked at IBM. I have PTSDILL.

Lucy's Last Birthday was an episode I hated as a kid but I watched it on Pluto and was surprised at how moved I was at Lucy's vulnerability. It's a fine episode.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 4, 2024 5:20 PM |
I love seeing the Ricardos and Mertzes just doing normal everyday things like having a nice at-home dinner together, watch television, attend a Broadway show, have a sandwich at the soda fountain counter, play cards, and just act like normal socialized adults. It makes all the other shenanigans funnier because we see them when they're just doing mundane things as well. It's the balance that makes them so funny.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | August 4, 2024 11:42 PM |
When Ethel joined Lucy on the camping trip (driving, no less, something the writers forgot when Lucy tried to teach her to drive), she told Fred she was going to visit her mother. So Fred was in charge of taking care of Little Ricky. Of course, he had Mrs. Trumbull's old snatch to lick so it was a vacation for him as well.

How come we never got to see the Robert Taylor orange (or its source)?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | August 5, 2024 3:43 AM |
R97, we did see it a few times. The last time was after it was totally moldy and Lucy notes that it says Robert Taylor in a deep crevice. We didn't see the moment where she had it signed but we did see the Richard Widmark grapefruit being signed.

by Anonymous | reply 134 | August 6, 2024 7:36 PM |
R134, it was cool that Loper said something nice about all the wives, "the very pretty", "the very glamorous", "the very lovely".
So we also come to a question when it comes to the Fashion Show. Loper says that Mrs. Alan Ladd was going to wear Loper's Basic Dress to the fashion show. We never see her or the dress. Was she one of the ones who was drunk backstage? When Lucy goes on the Hollywood Bus tour, they go past Alan Ladd's house and Lucy says "it would be nice if we could see Sue Carroll walking around."

One of my favorites is Lucy getting the part of the showgirl with the huge headdress (The only thing is, it’s hard to believe a director would call an actress or bit player “Mrs. Ricardo” even if her husband was “MGMs new star” Ricky Ricardo).
Btw the aftermath of Ricky starring in a Hollywood movie and becoming famous, knowing all those stars, being on a first name basis with them, then just returning to relative obscurity is never really explained. Nobody ever says he flopped, yet he didn’t succeed.

Ricky's "Don Juan" was "shelved" by MGM, and nothing else was ever revealed as to why.

Because she could use her room for a whorehouse. The salesmen and stockers from Bloomingdale’s loved to pass an hour at Miss T’s Salon. She was known as the queen of the backdoor.

I rented a boxed set one time and came to the conclusion that 1 in 5 were funny. They had some real duds.

R162 Right, and none of that made any sense.

by Anonymous | reply 172 | August 7, 2024 11:55 PM |
R171, I thought the reason was because Americans are so stupid that they believed Don Juan was a real movie so they nixed that and put him into another movie that was unnamed. No confusion for the stupid.

Ricky was not very talented
I hate ALL of his shitty musical numbers and his fake laugh is cringe
by Anonymous | reply 174 | August 7, 2024 11:58 PM |
No matter the reason, it was a swell way to get off to a lousy start in Hollywood. Thankfully everything worked out ok.

Why hasn't Hollywood done an ILL reboot? They seem to have redone every other show. Why not this? And Deb Messing could be Lucy.

Die in a grease fire.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | August 8, 2024 5:30 AM |
The part of Lucy would probably go to Wanda Sykes. “Ricki” would be played by Billy Porter. Guest starring Sara Gilbert as Ethel with Ezra Miller rounding out the cast as Phred.

"They" Love Lucy

Starring Lens Dunham as Fred Mertz.

Obviously it's got to be Lucie and Desi Jr as their parents. Yeah a little incestuous but can't have everything. Vicki Lawrence as Mrs. Trumbull, Madonna as Mrs. McGillicuddy.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | August 8, 2024 5:52 AM |
With Jasmin Savoy Brown and Quinta Brunson as Charli and Carolyn Appleby.

[quote]And Deb Messing could be Lucy.
Why do people keep saying this? Messing is nothing like Lucille Ball. She’s not even funny.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | August 8, 2024 12:31 PM |
R191 I agree, I don't want to see Debra Messing play Lucille Ball. I don't even care for Messing. But as for the reason people keep saying it:
You wouldn’t be the first person to tell Debra Messing that she looks like Lucille Ball. You also wouldn’t be the most important person to mention it — that honor belongs to Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz.
Last year, the cast of “Will & Grace” filmed a very special “I Love Lucy” tribute episode, which aired on Thursday night. Messing recalled, on the “Variety After-Show,” the moment when Arnaz came into the dressing room to see her full transformation for the first time.
“I was in the green dress. We were about to shoot the song and dance [number] and she walked in and she just looked at me and didn’t say anything.” Messing told Variety. “Then she hugged me and she said, ‘This feels really good. It’s been a long time since I’ve hugged you,’ and everyone started to cry.”
“And then she smiled and she said, ‘I know how long you’ve been wanting to do this, Debra. And I’m so glad we were able to make it happen.’” And then I had to go [to the stage],” she continued. “As I walked away, she said, ‘Break a leg, Mom.’ Everybody just flipped out and cried. It was really moving.”

Starring Taylor Swift as Lucy
Jelly Roll as Ricky Ricardo
Lizzo as Ethel Mertz
Danny Devito as Fred Mertz
by Anonymous | reply 193 | August 8, 2024 1:51 PM |
Messing looks like a drag queen version of Lucy. Lucy had delicate features and was quite beautiful. Messing does not have similar features.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | August 8, 2024 3:14 PM |
Cocoa Peru *is* Lucille Ball.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | August 8, 2024 3:17 PM |
I posted the reboot comment just to stir shit up. They shouldn't do an ILL reboot, I'm just surprised it hasn't happened yet since they've redone everything else.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | August 8, 2024 3:20 PM |
Ahem r196!!
by Anonymous | reply 197 | August 8, 2024 3:32 PM |
ILL is so iconic that any remake would come under heavy scrutiny. Plus they would have to get Lucie and Desi Jr on board with it.
Additionally, there’s nobody that can do that type of acting. Screwball comedy is not taught in acting schools, so it would take a special type of actress to pull it off.
