PART 1: Angelina has HARRRRRD. CORE. attachment wounds from her parents' divorce. That's first and foremost. Her mother was so gutted when John left her that she had baby Angelina removed from her sight and cared for in an adjacent apartment for the first few years of Angelina's life. A former nanny writes: "At some point they started renting an apartment above their own. I still remember the address - 468 South Roxbury in Beverly Hills. It was supposed to be for Jon's production company, but Angie [then a newborn INFANT] ended up living there with a team of nannies. We are talking literally three floors above the one where Marcheline lived with her son Jamie. Meanwhile, Angie's dad John Voight had run off with Stacy, one of his young drama students. He rarely visited his young, vulnerable children during this time. PART 2: Essentially, John was a selfish Ryan O'Neal type who cheated on their mother and then threw her in the garbage like a piece of trash. And then went on to live his best actor life and did very little parenting of his children. And when he did, he found that the kids resented him and sided with their long-suffering mother, who I imagine was histrionic and broken and never recovered from the divorce. While there are always nannies and helpers around, Angelina and her brother James were severely neglected by their actual parents. The mother was not able to be fully engaged in the task of parenting due to her mental health issues and eternal anger towards her ex, their father. So they were raised with zero boundaries or strong parental guidance. It was, in other words, a free-for-all. What is more, Angelina and her brother were parentified and made to feel responsible for their mother's feelings and needs. This makes a child very protective over their mother and blind to the realities of her deficits in parenting.

By her teen years, Angelina was completely off the rails. Her drugged out, animal-torturing, little-girl-lost goth queen teens and twenties are the years everyone looks back on with wagging fingers, judging her and assuming she is still this same rebellious, angsty, self-destructive and attention-seeking wild child. I believe that when Angie made the decision to adopt Maddox and she became a mother, a switch was flipped. I believe Angie truly did have a leveling-up moment and she was changed by this new maternal feelings she was experiencing. I think becoming a mother was deeply fulfilling for Angie and tasted for the first time, a kind of love that felt wholesome, selfless, spiritual and clean. And it felt so meaningful and beautiful to her that she wanted to expand and expand that love, that maternal bliss, and grow a garden of children through which she could create and experience the kind of familial warmth, love and security she was not provided as a child herself.

PART 3: I believe that she was drawn to Brad because he subconsciously reminded her of her own father. I believe Brad is very much a John Voight type. Old school Missouri values. He was raised in a right-wing Christian household. I'm sure his father used the belt on them, and I can say this with a degree of certainty because I grew up in Springfield, MO, too. I am just a few years younger than Brad. I grew up with a Jewish single mom. We hailed from Kansas City, but my formative years were in Springfield and the religious middle class were all around me. Very patriarchal, very organized and Jesus was Lord. The socio-religious expectations for children --and consequences for violating those expectations -- were always clear (unlike for me, growing up with my hippie Bu-Jew laissez-faire mom and NO DAD - I got away with MURDER!). Kids would get the belt, they would get grounded, they would be put to WORK. NO BACK TALK ALLOWED. GET IN THE TRUCK, WE'RE TAKING MEE MAW TO CHURCH. ZIP IT, BOY.

Brad "escaped" down-to-earth Missouri for the rarified Hollywood dream. He may have been a "pool boy," he may have been a bohemian pothead, he may have embraced his gay friends and gone to weird parties with weird creative types. But that Missouri upbringing was in there, waiting to spring forth. Becoming a father probably awoke some programming in him that would have clashed MIGHTILY with Angelina's free-spirit nature. Angelina, who did not grow up with a full-time father and did not speak the language of father-ness at all.

I believe that for Angie, Brad's form of "father" was a bummer. Raised voice, raised hand, "you BETTER not look at me that way again, now go to your room" and all the rest. Totally aggressive and shocking, to a sensitive woman who grew up with only a permissive mother at the helm. I don’t know what the “new” allegations are, but as a criminal-defense and Family Law, lawyer, I will say that years and years after the initial filing, having “new” allegations is very suspect. Also, despite what some people on this thread, think, it is not at all unusual for someone who has full custody and hates their ex to engage in such parental alienation that the children vehemently hate the other spouse. Time will tell.

As a criminal defense lawyer and Family Law lawyer, how would you deal with drug addicted/alcoholic spouses who physically assault their kids and spouse? Do you say it was an isolated incident or that we'll get the kids therapy? Perhaps parental alienation occurs when a young child witnesses a drunk/whacked out father or mother go slap happy on the family.

R249 All cases are different. You need to hire experts to interview the children to ascertain, if you can, the actual facts. If the children have been exposed to abuse from a parent resulting from drugs and alcohol, you request that the court order that parent into rehab, parenting, classes, and coparenting classes. You may also ask for conjoint therapy with the parent and the children, and either supervised, or no visitation for that parent until the situation has been addressed. If the child has just been alienated with false allegations of abuse, then both the child and the parent need to undergo individual therapy and also conjoint therapy. If the child has definitely been abused, then you need to have supervised visitation for that parent, or no visitation to that parent until those issues have been addressed and obviously, rectified. That would be the judge’s call. I have represented parents accusing their ex of abuse, parents, justly accused of abuse, parents falsely accused of abuse, and have been appointed by the court as Minors Counsel protecting the children. So I’ve seen it all. Often, allegations of abuse are years old and arise only when the parties are splitting. Sometimes the abuse allegations are completely legitimate. Other times, they are fabricated or exaggerated to weaponize that party’s position.

R249 I will add that during the pandemic I had a case where the father was accused of abusing a 12-year-old male child. The abuse wasn’t necessarily significant as far as abuse goes, but my client denied it. Because it was during the pandemic, everybody had to appear via zoom in our court. The case dragged on for nearly a year and a half. We had multiple hearings. The mother’s family was very wealthy and paid nearly half $1 million for her legal representation. My client paid me something like $3000. Luckily, we had a very savvy judge, and he listened very carefully to all of our arguments and ascertained that the child’s allegations against his father were coached by the mother and were false. Nevertheless, by the time the hearing was over, the case of dragged on for so long, that there was definitely a significant estrangement between father and son. The father wanted to aggressively regain custody of his son. I did not believe that that would be appropriate in this case, since there had been such severe parental alienation. I knew that the child would not do well with his father for period of time. Another year passed and things weren’t going so well with mom. My client now has regained custody of his son, who is doing very well. Sometimes you need to let time sort things out after this kind of vigorous parental alienation.
