Punkie Johnson Announces Departure From 'Saturday Night Live' After 4 Seasons

Punkie Johnson announced that after four years she will not be returning as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” next season. “I just want to let you know after four seasons, I will not be returning to SNL for the 50th,” Johnson said Thursday in a video on Instagram.

“It wasn’t even a dream because I never thought that I would get there. That’s how surprised I was,” she said. “I’m just this little lesbian chick from New Orleans who is just enjoying life doing comedy and thinking that’s it.”

HuffPost reached out to Johnson’s team for comment on why she is leaving the show but did not receive an immediate response.

She is easily replaceable

by Anonymousreply 1August 2, 2024 6:11 AM

R1: Lorne Michaels

by Anonymousreply 2August 2, 2024 6:14 AM

I didn't know she was still working

PUNKIE GONE??!!

(This should have been Bearking News, OP)

by Anonymousreply 4August 2, 2024 6:24 AM

Nit surprised she was fired. She barely registered for four years.

by Anonymousreply 5August 2, 2024 6:25 AM

I hated her at first but she really grew into the role. SNL usually burns off cast members around this time of year. Don't expect her to be the only one. Devon Walker is lousy. Andrew Dismukes is kind of one note...

by Anonymousreply 6August 2, 2024 6:26 AM

Marcello is one hot tamale.

by Anonymousreply 7August 2, 2024 6:28 AM

WHO?

by Anonymousreply 8August 2, 2024 6:29 AM

was she a DEI hire?

by Anonymousreply 9August 2, 2024 6:30 AM

Please please please dump Sarah Sherman.

by Anonymousreply 10August 2, 2024 6:34 AM

Marchello is adorable. So fun......Michael Longfellow is a waste of space.

They need to dump half the cast. Having more than 10 SNL players is just fucking annoying especially when you consider from the time the show first started through the 80s they just had maybe seven or eight regular cast members. The show back then was a lot more funnier than it is now.

I actually like Punkie but you don’t need so many players that the opening credits are damn near 2 minutes long introducing everyone.

by Anonymousreply 12August 2, 2024 6:46 AM

I'm surprised she got the chop before the 50th season, because, well ... black lez.

She's never been essential to the show but ultimately found her spot.

Yet four seasons is a long run. Belushi and Aykroyd were only on the original SNL for four seasons.

by Anonymousreply 13August 2, 2024 7:17 AM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 14August 2, 2024 8:35 AM

She never broke out. Or they never gave her much to do. SNL audiences won’t miss her.

by Anonymousreply 15August 2, 2024 8:44 AM

I repeat -- WHO? Good for her "announcing" her departure. If she hadn't, we would never have known she was on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 16August 2, 2024 9:12 AM

Though she never had that much to do on the show, I liked her and wish her well in the future.

by Anonymousreply 17August 2, 2024 11:43 AM

This would be upsetting if I’d ever heard of her.

by Anonymousreply 18August 2, 2024 12:53 PM

The show is not in a good state. She didn't carry any sketches, so the effect is minimal. We need some bigger changes.

by Anonymousreply 19August 2, 2024 1:01 PM

[quote] We need some bigger changes.

1. Cut the cast in half. 2. Fire both Lorne Michaels and Head Writer(?) Michael Che. 3. NBC BEG and offer a lot of money to Tina Fey to replace them both.

That would be a great start.

by Anonymousreply 20August 2, 2024 1:05 PM

Lorne has been grooming Tina Fey for the top spot. It's been the subject of gossip for ages. I think he'll announce his retirement around or after the 50th.

by Anonymousreply 21August 2, 2024 1:12 PM

She wasn’t that funny.

by Anonymousreply 22August 2, 2024 2:14 PM

I watch the show consistently and can’t remember a single memorable Punkie moment.

by Anonymousreply 23August 2, 2024 2:21 PM

I think her most memorable moments have been playing the straight man sister in the “Lisa from Temecula” sketches, which is a pretty meagre return after four seasons.

Realistically, she’s much more of a standup comic than a sketch actor - and if you aren’t able to get sketches produced around your standup persona like Leslie Jones and Pete Davidson were (or end up as Weekend Update anchor), you’re probably not destined for much on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 24August 2, 2024 2:51 PM

Now get rid of screeching Sarah Sherman and unfunny Bowen Yang.

Oh, and that other black guy who's so unmemorable I can't even think of his name.

by Anonymousreply 25August 2, 2024 2:56 PM

It’s the 50th season coming up, and probably Lorne’s last. There aren’t going to be any major changes until Liz Lemon takes over next season.

by Anonymousreply 26August 2, 2024 2:57 PM

This is just like when Li'l Sebastian died, except no one remembers her.

by Anonymousreply 27August 2, 2024 3:00 PM

You could replace the entire cast and no one would notice or care.

by Anonymousreply 28August 2, 2024 3:03 PM

R27 Who?

by Anonymousreply 29August 2, 2024 3:20 PM

SNL should be cancelled. It hasn’t been funny for years.

by Anonymousreply 30August 2, 2024 3:24 PM

Sarah Sherman and Marcello Herandez are both standup comedians who have managed to seize a good amount of air-time that centres their standup persona (Nickelodeon 90s baby surrealist weirdo for her, Gen Z Latino “baby girl” for him).

Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and Molly Kearney (who might be spared so they can have a big fat genderqueer person play JD Vance) haven’t managed that and probably should leave as well.

by Anonymousreply 31August 2, 2024 3:38 PM

Whether or not you or I think it’s funny is not what determines whether it gets cancelled, r30. It’s a for-profit business.

It should determine whether or not we watch it, but in my case, at least, it doesn’t. The rare classic sketch is enough to keep me watching. On DVR.

by Anonymousreply 32August 2, 2024 3:39 PM

Molly out:

WHO??!!!!

by Anonymousreply 36August 2, 2024 7:47 PM

Good. That other chick is hilarious. I believe her family is from Nigeria.

by Anonymousreply 37August 2, 2024 7:50 PM

I meant to add she’s not funny^^

by Anonymousreply 38August 2, 2024 7:50 PM

Punkie Johnson’s comedic timing sucks but this chick is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 39August 2, 2024 7:52 PM

On her Twitter she would retweet people who were pulling for her to play Kamala on the show but obviously that didn’t happen. It would have immediately given her the spotlight she never got so I’m sure that’s one reason she left.

by Anonymousreply 40August 2, 2024 8:02 PM

I think Punkie’s best moments were the times she appeared on Weekend Update saying how terrible she is with celebrity names. Those bits were pretty funny.

by Anonymousreply 41August 2, 2024 8:07 PM

There are too many SNL players thus not allowing many of them to shine.

by Anonymousreply 42August 2, 2024 9:47 PM

SNL has become bigger than itself. Nowadays some A list star or former cast member calls Lorne to play the hot people of the moment. So wack.

by Anonymousreply 43August 2, 2024 10:10 PM

Keenan Thompson has been on SNL for over 20 years. He simply won’t age.

by Anonymousreply 44August 2, 2024 10:12 PM

[Quote] —bring back Kate McKinnon and Bill Hader

WHO?

by Anonymousreply 45August 2, 2024 10:18 PM

Molly Kearney added zero to the show. I was surprised they got a second season.

by Anonymousreply 46August 3, 2024 12:57 AM

Was Punkie a Black Lesbian or a gender fluid negro?

by Anonymousreply 47August 3, 2024 1:01 AM

R47.???????? What would make you randomly use the word negro. And yes she was a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 48August 3, 2024 1:03 AM

Gender fluid Black?

by Anonymousreply 49August 3, 2024 1:05 AM

R46 Was she the one who tried to promote herself as a Mama Cass soundalike?

by Anonymousreply 50August 3, 2024 1:29 AM

No, R50, that is Chloe Troast, who should be on thin ice as well.

by Anonymousreply 51August 3, 2024 1:31 AM

I’ve been enjoying the 70s and 80s shows on Peacock, even though they’re mutilated.

I think I’ve outgrown the new SNL. That Beavis and Butthead sketch that was supposed to be SO FUNNY didn’t make me laugh at all. I did like Lisa from Temecula.

by Anonymousreply 52August 3, 2024 1:40 AM

[quote]Andrew Dismukes is kind of one note

We are NOT going to say mean things about my Andrew Dismukes. You got that!!

by Anonymousreply 53August 3, 2024 1:44 AM

R51 So she's the one who promoted herself as the nonbinary cast member?

by Anonymousreply 56September 10, 2024 2:38 AM

Surprised Chloe Troast left. She seemed to be hitting a stride

by Anonymousreply 57September 10, 2024 3:28 AM

These people are too young and haven't the experience or the chops. It'll just be high school-level skits with stereotypical clowns.

Have they ever tested the demographics to see who actually still watches the show? Lorne seems to think it's Gen Z, chilling before they go out and cruise last call at the bar.

by Anonymousreply 58September 10, 2024 3:47 AM

R57, according to her post, she was let go.

by Anonymousreply 59September 10, 2024 4:38 AM

R58 You hit the nail on the head. I’ve always enjoyed the show when cast members are a little older and have knocked around showbiz a bit. You can guarantee any venom they spew toward Hollywood is real.

by Anonymousreply 60September 10, 2024 1:38 PM

R55 They're promoting Devon Walker to featured player?

Why? The guy isn't remotely funny or talented.

by Anonymousreply 61September 10, 2024 1:55 PM

How the hell is this godawful show still on??

by Anonymousreply 62September 10, 2024 1:58 PM

I never heard of her

by Anonymousreply 63September 10, 2024 2:10 PM

The nonbinary one needs to go too.

by Anonymousreply 64September 10, 2024 3:42 PM
