The Story Behind Nicole Kidman’s Biggest Flop: Grace of Monaco

These are the same people who want to make a movie about MY LIFE and I showed them the door. My incredibly interesting and at times spine tingling story will never make it into a Hollywood biopic. I’m too modest for anything like that.

She was too ugly to play Grace. Not that Nicole is that ugly but Grace Monaco was absolutely beautiful. They would have been better off whitening Vanessa L Williams. Horrible casting.

I can’t believe they cast elderly Kidman when Rosamund Pike was right THERE.

Is she still wanting to play Olivia Newton-John in the biopic of Olivia’s life??

She was too tall and old to play Grace. I've loved her since To Die For, The Others, and Moulin Rouge, but is that her biggest bomb? She makes a lot of indie films that barely see the light of day.

They should have casted Charlize Theron or January Jones.

“So wooden it’s a fire risk” really captured Kidman in a nutshell.

The sad thing is that this part of GK’s life wasn’t very interesting. When her daughters were harum-scarum as eurotrash driving her crazy, it was much more tumultuous.

And as beautiful as those cheekbones may have been, GK really wasn’t a great actress. She possessed poise and elegance, but she had range from A to B.

Biggest flop? Ha.

As usual, the truth would make for a much more interesting movie. Grace had a magic pocket poochie and she made the most of it before she was through. Good for her. Princess Powerpuss.

I can see Brie Larson in the role.

I always associate this movie with the disastrous Diana biopic starring Naomi Watts.

Biggest flop? Ha. Kidman makes terrible films. The CGI Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball scared me.

R10 I hate how these articles always romanticize Grace Kelly's floozy behavior as being some sort of 1950's sex positivity when that was literally as far from the truth as possible...

Two anecdotes is enough to know everything about her character... Back when she was an actress she was sleeping with a friend's husband while her friend, his wife, was on her deathbed in the next room dying of cancer.

Then when she was married to Rainier she was again sleeping with one of her only friend's husband. When her friend found out about the affair and confronted her, she broke down and blamed it on her father passing away. Even though her father had been dead for like 5 years at that point...

I'll try to find the article about the biography that exposed this, and many more about her character.

Grace used to always complain about not being able to make female friends, and claiming that they found her intimidating... When the truth was that she would intentionally pursue taken men in the hopes that they would "choose" her over their wives. And she especially loved to go after her friend's partners hoping that their "choosing" of her put her on a pedestal above her friends. She was a raging homewrecker and a handmaiden for men.

Now of course these men are to blame for stepping out on their wives. And it's repulsive that back then and even today men and their degeneracy keeps getting off the hook. That doesn't excuse Grace's behavior though. Adultery is not just stepping out in a relationship. It is also willingly helping someone step out on their relationship. And it's even worse when Grace herself befriended these women to get closer to their spouses.

Grace is basically Camilla of Great Britain but with a pretty face, and I hate how she gets to maintain her classy facade even in death while other starlets get ripped apart for doing the same or less.

But… great gowns, beautiful gowns I guess.

I think her Grace Kelly was too much like her Lucille Ball.

The Stepford Wives is another poorly conceived vehicle for Nicole Kidman's eternal quest for movie stardom.

It was a really weird biopic in that the conspiracy Grace uncovers--that Rainier's sister is for some reason plotting against him--never happened, as far as I can tell.

Or rather: it happened BEFORE Grace married Rainier. Their engagement immediately scuttled any plans for the conspiracy to replace him because everyone knew she would bear his children.

Ya think Grace and Lucy were bad wait till ya get a load of....

Her next bio-pic, with the aid of CGI, will find her playing both Audrey *and* Judy Landers!

I watched the Diana movie on a long distance flight and it could be that that screen was only 7” wide or whatever but I didn’t think it was so bad. Also watched the Grace movie on the same flight and that was awful and boring to boot. But the Diana movie, I know everyone said Naomi Watts was too old and too short to play Diana but I thought she really captured that Shy Di/chin down/looking up at you with big blue eyes persona really well. And she nailed the voice.

R3 And Rosamund is more talented.

January Jones has trouble walking and talking at the same time, so stop suggesting her. Just awful.

Kidman was miscast, but Tim Roth as Rainier was a terrible choice and played him horribly. He looks nothing like him as well.

R32, was the Diana movie any good? How was the rship with Dodi portrayed?

Just a fling to make her true love (Hasnat Khan) jealous and do something fun while her children were away and because she had no friends (Diana flips through here Rolodex of “friends” - it’s all paid woo-woo pushers like her astrologer)

Nicole can’t play real people anymore, her face is too uncanny.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t good stories out there for her: a sci-fi film about a robot come to life, a poignant drama about an aging Hollywood star who’s fucked up her face, etc

I have awful taste. I liked both Kidman as Kelly and Watts as Diana. I am also entertained by movies I don't need to think about.

Viola Davis IS Grace Kelly!!!!

As much as I like Naomi Watts - and she gets some good D - her casting just always seemed like “Dimestore Diana”. Like she was the Diana you could order from the Argos catalog.

Watts is a midget compared to Diana.

No one has ever played Diana decently other than Emma Corrin. Although to be fair she was helped a lot by having the very dynamic Josh O’Connor as her screen partner, the actor who accomplished the impossible task of making Charles compelling to watch.

I thought Debicki was better as Diana and looks eerily like her from some angles in The Crown. That being said, I think Watts.pulled off Diana very well. Got the voice spot on. And I read at the time that Watts asked permission from Diana beyond-the-grave to play her. Watts said there was an answer and that's why she took the role. Helena Bonham Carter asked the same of Princess Margaret before taking.on the role.

The princess looks like she was ready to Grace that presidential DICK.

I’ve never seen it but it looked so boring.

And dated. It looked like a movie that would have worked in the early 2000s during the Oprah TV show years.

The Diana movie and arc on The Crown strike me as being the same, r46.

I got to Margaret's wedding in The Crown and couldn't bring myself to watch another episode. There were few happy endings in that family, and viewing made-up detail and dialogue to portray the drama didn't appeal. The first episodes dealing with the last illness and death of George VI were pretty grim.
