What does Shapiro canceling weekend plans have to do with the VP announcement on Tuesday? Lots of back-and-forth on having Shapiro on the ticket when NOTHING has been announced and OP has offered nothing in the way of inside knowledge or proof.
Nothing to see here folks...
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 1, 2024 7:50 PM |
This doesn't mean anything. Even if Shapiro isn't her VP pick, it would make sense that he would appear and speak at the rally in Philly in support of her candidacy. He's the governor of the state after all, and has vowed to do anything in his power to back her campaign.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 1, 2024 7:52 PM |
An announcement tomorrow makes sense. They will bring in an astronomical sum over the weekend, and they can be the focus of the Sunday newspapers and news shows.

Identity politics is nothing to be proud of. Identity politics is what go us into this mess in the first place - people on both sides more concerned about "identity" than policy and leadership.
Be "proud" if she picked someone with strong educational credentials who has shown leadership and a strong knowledge of policy and its impact.
Be "proud" if her choice adds depth and breadth to the ticket with the strongest opportunity to win the election.
Be "proud" if he's a candidate who has shown strength and courage to do what's right, not what's expedient.

R14, I agree with your stance on identity politics, but politics has always been about politics. Johnson was picked by JFK to lock in Texas. It's always been a chess game but the players did indeed know how to play chess back then.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 1, 2024 8:05 PM |
It's premature to declare but yeah, signs are pointing to Shapiro:
- Harris and Veep kick off tour Tuesday in Philly PA - Harris has reportedly deep-vetted just 2: Kelly and Shapiro - Harris says she wants someone with executive experience (that'd be Shapiro or Walz) - PA has those 20 electoral votes - scutttlebutt is that she really likes him
I'm nervous about it being Shapiro, Jewish with a stereotypically Jewish surname at a time when anti-semitism is so high on the progressive left. It just seems like a setup for more bigotry to get flung at the Harris-VP ticket. Fringe orgs are already calling him "Genocide Josh". But he is smart and telegenic and charismatic when you get to know him.
If true, this has me optimistic but nervous. But PA loves the guy -- and he would trounce Vance in a debate.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 1, 2024 8:10 PM |

He would cancel his plans even if he’s just in the running.
And we already know that.

This is shaping up to be the biggest disaster since Gore/Lieberman in 2000.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 1, 2024 8:11 PM |
Absurd, R20. Harris is inspiring a lot more enthusiasm than Gore did in 2000, and Shapiro is younger and smarter and better looking and much more TV-friendly than Lieberman ever was on his best day.
I don't know if you remember how awkward and wooden and ambivalent about being our nominee Al Gore seemed in 2000, but I do. It was "cringe" as the GenZ kiddies say today. It is nothing like we are seeing with Harris and the rallies she's pulled off in the past week-plus.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 1, 2024 8:15 PM |

R21, Gore's downfall was distancing himself from Clinton and the Monica scandal. He thought he'd cruise to victory with a clean slate. The problem was he already had the personality of a blank slate and desperately needed the Clinton charisma to roll him over the finish line. The weasel weaseled and in the end, it bit him in the ass. That and hanging chads and the SC intervening. Oh, well.
R22, is posting from 2000.

[quote]Identity politics is nothing to be proud of.
And yet identity politics is ALWAYS cited as the reason Democratic running mates had to be white men from the South (Bentsen, Gore, Edwards, Kaine) or otherwise appeal to white christian constituencies (Biden was chosen over Mark Warner - a white man from the South - because he was Catholic.) Despite blacks and Jews being the backbone of the Democratic Party for DECADES. Or the Republicans putting the nastiest most extreme candidates (Dick Cheney, Mike Pence) or complete morons (Dan Quayle, Sarah Palin, JD Vance) on their tickets. Democrats always had to apologize for being diverse, and liberal, every four years.
This is a moment anyone who is not a white heterosexual Christian male - which is the entire board - should relish.

This means absolutely nothing. And considering the baggage that Shapiro has, I’d be surprised if he’s picked as the VP. It’s not like he’s needed to win Pennsylvania. Obama/Biden won PA 2008 and 2012. Biden/Harris won it in 2020. Hell, even Gore and Kerry won PA in 2000 and 2004 respectively. He’s not needed to win PA.

R27, KH has until August 7th to make her decision. But as R12 mentioned upthread, it would be to her advantage to announce early on Friday. Then she has the weekend fundraising and the Sunday press in overdrive.
Remember when Trump would fire or lose another staffer they would release the info late on Friday afternoon so it would be buried before he got the hell out of dodge for the weekend.

You're a fucking moron with such binary thinking. It's not about whether women will vote for Trump because of this; it's the fact that some won't come out and vote at all if Shapiro is on the ticket. Many are already voicing their opposition to him being Harris' VP pick (along with progressive anti-war activists over Gaza and teachers unions with his support of school vouchers). There are many others that the Harris campaign can choose from without the headache of causing dissension within the base.
But go ahead and continue championing Shapiro as the VP, and watch how the media ramps up all the negative friction his pick will create among his detractors.

I really don't know enough about Shapiro to have an opinion on him one way or another. But I do know Kamala Harris well enough to know she wouldn't blow her current advantage by pulling a Trumply move and choosing a bad VP who would alienate voters. So far, Datalounge has told me that he will lose young voters because of his stance on Israel, and that he will lose female voters because of something about covering up a sex thing. If he's really that divisive he wouldn't be on Kamala's short list. She's no dummy.

His positions on the war are the same as all the other candidates, but only he is unacceptable to the fringe left. Why? Many Arabs are supporting Trum over "social issues" r120 “Arabs and Muslims are conservative. They believe values. They oppose abortion. They believe strongly in religious freedom and not restricting religious beliefs. They believe in the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. They respect the roles of men and women working together to strengthen their families,” Dr. Boulos said. “This is what they believe in.”

I don't understand the logic of the "it has to be Shapiro" argument. The fact that he and Kamala are friends and came up together gives them a history that provides him with an advantage in terms of constructing a working relationship, but he is divisive and choosing him would seem an unnecessary risk with so many other strong candidates in play. Plus, as others have pointed out, she doesn't need him in order to win PA.

Trump’s main line of attack on Harris is that she’s a radical leftist. Picking Shapiro and angering Queers for Hamas could counter that attack.

If Trump wins Georgia and North Carolina, he only needs to win Pennsylvania to win the election. Just those three states on the top of the ones already in his column. If the Democrats win Pennsylvania, it’s harder for Trump to cobble together a set of multiple states to get 270.

Harris meeting with the contenders this weekend. CNN says "Those finalists include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz." Includes doesn't necessarily mean only, but Beshear is absent.

CNN reference above was incomplete when I looked further:
Among those expected to meet with Harris are Govs. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Andy Beshear of Kentucky and JB Pritzker of Illinois; Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly; and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Most of the meetings are expected to be in person, but some could be conducted virtually. It is possible that additional candidates could be added to the schedule, the source said.
According to the source, Harris has not yet made her choice, and these face-to-face meetings will play a critical role in her decision-making.
Beyond whom Harris gets along with on a personal level, two sources familiar with how Harris is approaching her decision say her top consideration is electability – how and where a vice presidential candidate will help with independents and swing voters, especially in battleground states. And, the sources add, they don’t want someone who will be a distraction.
Multiple sources familiar with the campaign tell CNN Shapiro, Walz, and Kelly are considered among the top contenders for the job. Beshear is also being looked at closely, while Buttigieg and Pritzker are considered less likely to be chosen.

R182, I’m right there with you. I think once she makes the pick, we will all be saying “well DUH” because it’s so obvious that it must be Walz. Strategically, if you go down a checklist of pros and cons, Walz actually makes the most sense because of numbers, he has the most pros and the least cons, that’s how fucking simple and pure it is. He doesn’t have the pedigree of a classical VP pick, but I no longer think tradition matters. We KNOW very well that this is the method by which Queen Pelosi operates. I would imagine that if Nancy enjoys Vegas, that she is a queen at all games involving “strateger-ie”. I would love to play cards with that bitch, she’s my hero. Just pay attention to Nancy right now too, where she points us, I will follow like a good soldier, and I don’t need to question her orders because I hold that much trust in her.
All this to say? Imma pretty sure it’s Walz, AND we will soon know, and we all gotta align behind the ticket. In one way, I’m absolutely obsessed with who she picks, but on another level, I simultaneously realize that it doesn’t even really matter anymore. This isn’t about one person so much as an idea. Anyone who stands behind the true idea and ideals of America fits the bill. So to all of you worry-warts (including myself!), the pick is going to be ok regardless of who she lands on. The Rethugs are going to beat the fucking shit out of Dems as hard as they can, so in some sense, none of it matters, not even Harris herself! This is really a battle for America. Anyone can lead our cause, it’s not about WHO but WHAT they say, what they stand for, and how well they communicate it.
I think I need to start studying the French Revolution now too. I know the mere basics, I studied art history, but I think a deep dive on that might be helpful. If you had tried to tell me I would live through something this dramatic in America, I never would have believed you. I’m Gen X, and all we used to bitch about was that we never got to live through anything historic when we were in our 20’s…..be careful what you wish for! But here we are.

by Anonymous | reply 210 | August 2, 2024 8:04 PM |
I always guess the wrong person will be picked as VP, except for Kamala Harris. I said on election night 2016 after Trump was declared winner that “The next Democratic ticket has to be an older, safe white guy. That will be Joe Biden. He has to pick a woman of color to be VP. That will be Kamala Harris because she’s only half black and doesn’t look very dark or African and that will appeal more to white voters on a subconscious level. There are a lot of white voters who think they’re not racist but really are racist, but in an institutional-racist kind of way, not in a deliberate-racist way. ”
My husband said, “It will be Stacey Abrams.”
I said, “Have you ever seen Stacey Abrams? Have you ever heard of the word ‘optics’? She was out of breath after walking up 3 steps to get on a stage. There’s no way she’s going to be picked. You could literally hear her wheezing. Harris is slim, attractive, has a California accent and smiles a lot without having a huge space between her front teeth. She looks neat and organized. Stacey Abrams looks like she needs to go to the ER.”
It was the only time I was right about a VP pick. It was just logical that it would have to be Biden and Harris and I knew they were going to win.
I really didn’t know Trump was going to be such a shit show. I knew he was a horrible person, but I figured establishment republicans would force him to put neocons in his cabinet. I was very, very wrong about that. He was so much worse than I ever thought he could be …. and I knew he was a shitbag because I lived in NYC through the 1980s-2000s.

Mark Penn weighs in
“The best path to overcoming the hurdle that the Harris campaign faces in erasing Mr. Trump’s small lead is by picking Mr. Shapiro, the only vice-presidential contender I see who can reassure the moderates who are not sold on Ms. Harris. And he would do so not with slick or phony messaging, but with what he has always done: embracing his moderate record and his faith, not apologizing for it, and thinking about what’s in the best interest of everyone, not one faction. His pick would be a genuine gesture that Ms. Harris is willing to listen to the voters in the vital center.”

Why saddle your campaign with this baggage when there are plenty of other candidates to choose from for VP? Harris will have the same problem as Trump with Pence if she chooses Shapiro.

Holy fuck - everyone was up in arms yesterday. Biden was here for a fundraiser last month. Trump was here for a fundraiser in 2020 when he was actually president. Neither event resulted in the absolutely fanatically stupid traffic delays as happened yesterday. Suffolk County police and state troopers went flipping INSANE blocking off traffic for miles and miles on roadways nowhere near either the airport where he arrived or on the roadways leading to the fundraising mansion. People on the Southern State Parkway saw 30 state trooper cars with sirens blasting and lights flashing at 90 mph like 35 MILES AWAY from where Trump touched down and 50 MILES AWAY from the fundraiser. People were caught in traffic all the way out in Montauk for 2 hours. Police shut down overpasses for hours. One woman was blocked by police who wouldn’t let her or her car go 1/4 mile to her home. She had to squat and pee on the side of the road and she was several towns away from any Trump activity.
This is what you have to look forward to, folks. Militarized police locking down an entire metropolitan area because an 🍊 🤡 is meeting with billionaires 50 miles away.. Fucking unreal.
These weren’t rich people being shutdown by police, btw. Rich people fly in by helicopter and private jets. It’s working class people trying to get home from work in East Moriches and middle class people waiting for 2 hours in traffic because they took their kids to Putt Putt Golf in Montauk.

[quote] Having to spend an extra 45 minutes getting to your FIP share this weekend must've sucked!
What is an FIP share? There are almost a million people living in eastern Suffolk county. They have jobs they have to go to, kids they have to pick up from school, grocery shopping to get to and from. People in Eastport, Manorville, Riverhead and Calverton don’t have “shares” they have lives in their towns. And we have water parks, miniature golf, campgrounds, outlet malls, distilleries, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, nature reserves that local people go to in summertime. No reason to capture people on roadways and hold them virtually at gunpoint 20 miles away from some weird fatass who needs to pass the collection plate among the dirtiest, greediest, most degenerate gamblers on Wall Street.
Everyone who voted GOP however, deserves to be stuck in his mess. Maybe they’ll learn their place in his world. But people who don’t want him shouldn’t be roadblocked like theyre Bonnie and Clyde.

Josh Shapiro is governor of the most important state in this election. He is the most experienced leader and gifted orator of the remaining (strong) candidates. He would present voters with the most dynamic ticket since Clinton/Gore in 1992, and will be ready to serve on Day 1.
The whisper campaigns against Josh Shapiro have dark undertones. Breaking News: He’s Jewish. But just as Thatcher was identified as a game-changing force in politics instead of a woman, Josh Shapiro’s strengths and talents would easily transcend bigotry and identity politics.
Don’t understand the recent attacks on the strongest VP contender? Well, it’s a toxic mix of antisemitism, extremist views on Gaza, and jealous colleagues who don’t want to be blocked out of the presidential sweepstakes for the next decade.

[quote]And by that measure, a Jewish VP must be opposed.
You can cloak your antisemitism in "concern" for Gaza all you want, but it won't make a blanket opposition to Jews any less odious. (Plus Shapiro is actually to the *left* of this issue versus Harris: one of the points of choosing him is – irony noted – giving Harris, or even Biden, cover to finally cut Israel's weapons supply off.)

I'm pretty sure it's Shapiro too. They need the state. There's creeping vulnerability to the lefty label against Harris, and he's a demonstrated centrist.
The downside of Shapiro being chosen for the center is the Harris team's concern there will be a muddle (at least in media) about who is actually running the show. Walz is more progressive, but he can sell it well, so that might give him an upside.
And Kelly still retains strength about the border. It depends which state they want to be the foundation of an EC strategy.

Golly. If you and your (liberal) sister decided something, it absolutely MUST be true!!! Back in the reality-based world, no one is trying to change the minds of diehard Trumpists, and yes, there are *plenty* of undecideds – half of the electorate isn't affiliated with a specific party, a tidbit that's typically "forgotten" by the media during election season, and they're the reason why the US has gone from Clinton to Bush to Obama to Trump to Biden – but it seems clear that you don't actually pay attention to elections. by Anonymous | reply 296 | August 4, 2024 5:33 PM |
I think the campaign shifts once the VEEP settles to policy. There is a lot to be said about a lot of things, but especially choice and voting rights. She hasn't been (rightly in my view) hammering on the issues too much. They're keeping their powder dry. They're currently framing the Republicans (weird and we're not going back), before moving on to the substance of looking foward. The Republicans have to play defence on almost every issue the Democrats choose, because the Democrats have the center and the Republicans don't. They're cornered in their weirdness. Landslides aren't possible now (if ever again.) It's trench war for the hundreds or even tens of thousands that eke out a win. I still think they can pull more EC votes than anybody expects, without necessarily blowing the doors off the popular vote.
The election won't be decided until December. Again. But I do think it gets her the White House.

Before anyone jumps on me re this post about the Fail, I watch them during tense political times like these to see how they report on things. They have a lengthy update on their main page today regarding the Ellen Greenberg murder (suicide?) - the Philly woman found dead of 20+ stab wounds, some to the back of her head, and ruled a suicide. Her parents have been on a crusade since then to have the police and coroner re-open and re-examine the case.
One of the reasons the case was kept shut was the alleged perpetrator - the woman's fiancée, who initially found her - is from a wealthy local family who were major donors to Josh Shapiro's previous campaigns. He had recused himself from the case in 2022, but many think he helped interfere in it b/c of the connections.

The pro Shapiro has been so obnoxious and patronizing that this is quite delicious!

It is amazing that The Obama/Biden template is going v.2 with Harris/WalzSolid progressive who will get us to majority/Minority America, paired with a trustworthy white dude who knows how to move legislation.
If the template runs true, Walz will pick Secretary Pete for his VP whenever he has the chance.
By that time, Trump will either be out of jail or received the hot needle.

Shapiro is a brilliant orator and smart politician, he has great things ahead of him but he wasn't the best choice for VP - he would have been good, but Walz was the best.

R325 how long have you known about Shapiro as most people have never heard of him until last week. And it was just a few weeks ago that people were still saying Biden was sharp as a tack.

I've heard of Shapiro since I live in the Northeast, I know he ran a great campaign for governor and I'd heard him speak before, albeit online in sound clips. He is a great speaker, very reminiscent of Obama (who he emulates, vocally).
