He sounds like a DL'er! Apparently pretended to be a poor relation to an affluent family.

His real name was Patrick Clisham and while he was pretending to be Bunky Cushing and celebrating all of these high society "adopted mothers," he was denying his own mother, a celebrated amateur actress and employee of UM who died 5 years after her son at the age of 95. The clue was when Tribune columnist Mary Schmich was able to interview his sister who did not give Bunky up but allowed Mary to use her full name. A quick search found that while a Bunky Cuyshing was being mourned in Chicago, a Patrick Clisham, Jr. was being mourned quietly in Ann Arbor. Neither obituary referenced the other but the dates were the same.

Sorry, Mama Bunky died at 100. I can't imagine her pain at knowing her son thought their family was not good enough for him.

There is some irresistible appeal to reinventing oneself, isn't there?
