End of an era. I remember seeing Stevie Wonder and entourage at the Weho store.
Sad last days: Fred Segal is closing its two remaining stores

Biggest mistake Fred Segal ever made was moving from its iconic Melrose location up to Sunset Blvd.

I had at least four pairs of their Linda Ronstadt satin shorts c.1978.

Never heard of it so I don't care.

Not really sorry to see it go. Always thought that was an overrated and overpriced place.

Fred Segal had some of the rudest most obnoxious employees I have ever encountered, which is really something of an achievement in LA retail.

R5 Mauro's Cafe at WeHo store was fun for people watching. That being said, I could never figure out how they stayed in business - it didn't seem like they had a lot of stock out on the sales floor and what was there was weird.

How did it last this long? They're leaving the clothing business which makes sense but staying in the furniture business.

The one and only time I ever went in Fred Segal (on Melrose) I spotted a t-shirt I liked. Then I saw the price tag and left, never to return.
$200 for a t-shirt.

When I was at NYU, I stayed with a classmate from Los Angeles for a few weeks until I found a place to live. I had never heard of Fred Segal before, being an east coaster. I would borrow his clothes and I loved his Fred Segal shirts so much, I "liberated" them and had them in my closet for something like 25 years before I finally dumped them.

"where's my white collarless shirt from Fred Segal!"

Next you'll be telling me that Don Loper's exclusive salon is closing!

Is Zody's still in Burbank? I went to Hollywood by myself as a teen and I knew if I just made it to their parking lot I'd feel safe.

R13 No Zody's Burbank on San Fernando is long gone, so is the K-Mart that replaced it. Last I heard on Reddit they were using it for filming.

Zody's went out of business, R13. All their stores in California closed in 1986. What was the Burbank location is currently vacant; see photo at link.

Before her resurgence on America’s Next Top Model, Janice Dickinson was spotted by my friend having a meltdown at Fred Segal.
She was screaming at a salesperson, and my friend said, “She is seriously mentally unwell. Like, SERIOUSLY!”

That's so interesting, OP! Stevie remembers doesn't remember seeing you.
Or DOES HE?

The original Santa Monica store was great. It was the West Coast's answer to Barneys. When that store closed (years ago), the "real" Fred Segal was no more. The newer stores on Melrose, Sunset, etc. did not have the same scale or prestige. They were basically novelty boutiques coasting on the Fred Segal brand. So, while this is a sad development, it's not a big loss for LA.

When the Sahara in Vegas was rebranded as SLS, they had only Fred Segal stores inside. I knew it was the beginning of the end for them.

Fred Segal was acquired by another company years ago. It hasn't really been 'Fred Segal' in a long time, and as is often the case the brand lost whatever luster it once had after it was sold, sealing its fate.
