“Enjoy The Silence” is better than “Personal Jesus”

Out of Depeche Mode’s two massive #1 smashes (and classics) Enjoy The Silence is the better one. Personal Jesus is more loved and acclaimed but the former is the better song.

I agree, OP.

Love these guys.

People are People, their breakthrough smash will always define the band musically.

Any song off Some Great Reward is better than either of their #1s.

They had many great songs in the 80s. They might now have been #1 hits but they were great and loved and popular. I loved “See You”, a fixture on MTV.

"Violator" was the beginning of the end for DM. It peaked with the classic "Black Celebration" and "Music For The Masses."

They're both meh. "Halo" and "Clean" are better.

"Never Let Me Down" kicks some serious ass. "Music For The Masses" and "Violator" were peak Depeche Mode.

That said, I loved this later gem from "Ultra."

"Barrel of a gun" and "Useless" were great too. "Suffer Well" was the best song on Playing the Angel. But this song so encapsulated the 80's. I was listening to it the other day, sad that we have no Princess Di type anymore that brought everyone together.

Yes OP I started the other thread where I mentioned Violator. It's a perfect album. Enjoy the Silence and Policy of Truth back to back is nirvana.

They had a bit of a low after Playing the Angel, until Memento Mori which is peak DM.

In Your Room for me

I was never really a fan of Personal Jesus, though it was popular. I much preferred Enjoy the Silence and its video.

Blue Dress. Bloody exquisite.
