At risk of sounding like the pussy of ALL PUSSIES!!!!!
Election Night 2024.
I really cannot imagine a more stressful/impactful/horrendous/life changing night to be alive (minus the days of 9/11)
This is in my 44 years on this earth.
I suspect I will take an Ativan or 2 and just go to sleep very early.
I don't think I am mentally prepared.

I'll go to bed and wake up to the results. I get anxious just thinking about opening DL in the morning on the 6th.

MARY!
But seriously — it’s likely to be a long and tiresome process. We’ll be waiting for final counts which could take all night into morning if not several days. Plus if it is a narrow Harris victory the MAGA crowd will likely start all kinds of shit. I’m hooked on politics and I’ll be going to bed at 11.

Do what I did during the 2020 election.
I turned off the TV and computer at 6:00 pm election night, read a book, and went to bed early.
When I got up the next day, I kept the TV and computer off and made some breakfast.
Then I took a deep breath and turned the TV on. Thankfully, it was good news. But either way, I avoided all the unneeded stress of election night.

I am not waiting until November or January to feel dread.
After the events of the last two-and-a-half weeks, all bets are off for everything.

Whatever happens, we already know Trump is going to declare victory, and quicker than in 2020 at that. I wouldn't be surprised if he had the "President-elect" podium and seal ready on the night of the election and gave a presser about his victory.
So best get mentally ready for that NOW, so you won't have to get ready for it LATER.

This time around, Trump is a known quantity so forgiveness for voting for him will be impossible if he wins (god forbid ptooey ptooey). Let's face it, some of us have friends, family or associates who are low info and are sticking with him. I am feeling cautiously optimistic since Biden dropped out though.
There should be sedatives available for everyone that night. Haha, r6.

As terrible as a Trump victory would be, we've already been through it before. I don't think anything could be that traumatic again. Not saying the presidency wouldn't be worse this time around, but we've been innoculated against the shock.

For me it will be more traumatic if he wins this November because we know what we're in for, he's a known quantity which he wasn't back in 2016. We didn't know exactly what he'd be capable of back then, I recall talking to co-workers and them holding out hope he wouldn't be that bad. We know better now.

I keep hoping Trump will finally drop dead or close enough, shortly before the election, and become King of all October Surprises.

If ever there were a night to smoke copious amounts of pot, silly, it's Election Night.

Exactly, R9, the orange thing is even nuttier & more emboldened than he was in 2016.
I still can't believe we are living in the nightmare known as trump.

I don't believe you guys who say you won't be following it. You'll all be here with me commenting on the results as they come in.

And I will be drinking and smoking copious amounts of pot, as usual.

We just need this one last push and we'll be rid of him forever. No way in hell does the GOP run him again in 2028 when he loses for the second time.

In 2020, I went to bed early on election night. I couldn't stand the anxiety anymore. I woke up around 4:30 and opened my laptop. I subscribe to the Columbus Dispatch news alerts (I am a native Ohioan) and I had an email in my inbox. All I could read was, "BREAKING: Trump wins." The rest of the subject line was cut off.
I closed my laptop and made coffee, and read a book, trying to process things. Again, I thought. He won again. I tried to envision my future, and the future for my family and friends. I finally decided to brave the internet again, and then I realized the election hadn't been called yet. The entire email subject had been something like, "BREAKING: Trump wins Ohio ..."
I know I will sound like a MARY!!!!! but 2016 did traumatize me a bit.

I plan to spend election night with Ben & Jerry and Jim Beam.

r16 I love that anecdote so much, I'm gonna steal it and pass it off as my own the next time I'm swapping election war stories.

The day after election day will be a Wednesday, and people across the country will do what they do on a Wednesday no matter who wins. People who believe in apocalyptic visions of the future create their own trauma.

Those making fun of the Marys in this thread will be the first ones to break out a handkerchief when Kamala wins.

2016 was total denial and disbelief for me. I doubt I can ever be that shocked again by an election result.

Whoever wins, you know there's going to be a rioting.

I can’t watch. When I saw the first returns in 2016 I had to go buy a bottle of wine. 2020 gave me hope for humanity but it’s eroded again.

R29- Definitely-
I am thinking it will be close like 2020 and nothing will be final that night. Just another reason not to sit there and be tortured.
My gut tells me PA may save us/surprise for some reason
As people are unhinged I expect full blown hysteria for weeks.
It is only 3 months away.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 31, 2024 12:52 PM

I expect the same, OP. Potentially worse as people were not expecting Trump to win last time, including Trump himself.
This time, post Jan 6 etc, people on both sides will be blicked up and ready for action.

The more she leads in the polls leading up to the election, the less manoeuvring space they will have to cry a rigged election, and the less chance for violence. They have three months now to pre-grieve and pre-cope the fact that Trump is never setting his foot in the White House again.
