You don’t lose a tennis match from one bad call. She should apologize for her childishness and take responsibility for losing the match and then grow from the experience.

Idk OP if the ball is called out before you hit it then they should at least have replayed the point. And it was at a very significant part of the match. She’s upset because she cares about it obviously. And Idk if you know much about how tennis works but you can lose a match from one bad call on a point. Especially where break points are concerned, like in this case.

I'm fine with the umpire overruling the line judges, but only if they've consulted the cameras first. Because there's no way they see the faults better than the line judges.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 30, 2024 3:25 PM |
R2 I am a life long tennis player. Keeping your cool is essential and everybody gets a bad call now and then, it’s how you deal with it that really matters. You would NEVER see Chris Evert or Roger Federer behave this way. Hopefully she grows from this and next time she gets a bad call doesn’t demonstrate her emotional weakness to give her opponent the edge.

This is the difference between a great tennis player and a champion.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 30, 2024 3:41 PM |
R3 It's very rare for an umpire to overrule a line judge. They only do it when they're absolutely sure and sometimes their added height does mean they can judge it better.
The key thing is that once an umpire makes a call like that they're always going to stick to it. Imagine if, after the player argued for a few minutes, the umpire said "actually yeah, you might have a point", they'd ruin their authority. So they have to stick by any call they make.
Besides, one bad call won't ruin an entire match unless the player lets it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 30, 2024 3:46 PM |
R9 so you agree it was a bad call. Funny that none of you are complaining about the umpire. She should have called for the referee.

It's the Olympics; no one cares. It's not like it's Wimbledon.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 30, 2024 4:00 PM |
R10 The line judge appeared to get it wrong yes, so the umpire overruled them. It's unfortunate that Gauff reacted to the line judge's call, but the umpire had to overrule it if he was certain.
There's nothing that can really be done, other than take it on the chin and keep playing. If she was good enough to win the match, one bad call wouldn't have stopped her victory.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 30, 2024 4:03 PM |
Well, SERENA is her idol. Throwing a tantrum over a bad call is perfunctory.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 30, 2024 4:05 PM |
R12 point should be replayed if the call affects how they strike the ball. So, two bad calls rather than just one. And you’re still saying it’s her problem. You gals haha.

R16? Now that you mention it, I haven't see ol' Charlie here for awhile. I know he was elderly, because of the memories he posted of long-dead celebrities.
Hope he's OK.

charlie still posts here (look for any Streisand thread), he just doesn't sign his name.

But, she was the flagbearer for the USA, along with egomaniacal coach-killer LeBron James. Maybe amateurs should always have the honor to be in the spotlight for once by carrying the flag. It will mean something to them.

Interesting comment. Isn’t the Olympics considered the most prestigious event in all of sports?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 30, 2024 6:45 PM |
Tennis players compete to win Slams (with Wimbledon being the most prestigious of all), not Olympic gold, which is considered a bonus.
Monica Puig, who won the gold in 2016, and Belinda Bencic, who won in 2021, weren't Slam threats, though Bencic had a surprise run to the US Open semis once. It's easy to tell the Olympic fans from the tennis diehards in this thread.

Puig!

If there is any doubt the call impeded the swing then the point should be replayed. IMHO.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 30, 2024 7:25 PM |
R12 is correct. Feelings and opinions are irrelevant. Every player worth their salt knows the rules and understands if a call is overruled them that is it. You move on and don’t let it ruin your concentration.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 30, 2024 10:27 PM |
R24, not in tennis. Of course the Olympics matter, but winning a slam is harder.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 30, 2024 10:31 PM |
The ball was called out, so she didn't go for it? And she's a villain?
WTF?

Hey R29 you must have forgotten to reply to my comment at R7. I was wondering when you’d show your face again lol.

[quote]Tennis players compete to win Slams
That's GRAND SLAMS. Tennis players must win many other tournaments besides Grand Slams to maintain their ranking. Then their draw is better in Grand Slams. They can't just excel in those - ask Serena Williams who has half the tournament wins of Chris Evert in the non-grand slam events. That's why Serena is not nearly the GOAT, darlings.

Yes, but that's irrelevant to the question of what's the most prestigious prize in tennis.
The timing of the Olympics couldn't be much worse on the tennis calendar, so it's a treat when top players show up healthy and hungry. Venus and Serena were amazing Olympians, as was Andy Murray. It'll hurt if trash like Zverev joins Murray as a two-time gold medalist in singles.

I’m still here and I use my name. I’m a fan and a player. I’ve played all my life contemporary of Vitas G and Peter Fleming locally as a teen- played them many times. Coco has a bad day. Mostly she needs to focus on a glaring weakness in her game- forehand. She will not be a multi slam winner unless she fixes it. She arms the ball- doesn’t rotate from the waist consistently.
