Humidity exhausts me
I’m old (54) and live in Southeastern Wisconsin. We are having a hot and humid summer this year—with humidity worse than ever.
I took a vacation day today and find that I just have zero energy/motivation and feel weak because of the humidity. Even with the AC running, I just feel like lying around.
Other elders, is it normal to be this drained from the heat/humidity? I’m otherwise in good health and am pretty active once the cooler weather rolls around.

I feel the same. 64 years old in hot and muggy NYC.

I have never been a fan of humidity but man, perimenopause and humidity DO NOT MIX. I joke to people that I know the secret to spontaneous combustion because it's a special kind of hell having a hot flash 8n 90 degrees, 75 percent humidity. I can't do it anymore.

Do de-humidifiers work well in humidity? I may be moving to Ocean Springs MS in the fall and I have COPD and am worried about being able to handle the humidity. Got any advise?

I have a portable air conditioner with a dehumidifier feature. it does help but it's still not perfect. and, that's only if you stay inside.

If I don’t run the A/C constantly my bedroom will be 70% humidity or higher.

Dehumidifiers work but cause other issues if you are prone to sinus problems.

Pick a room and turn the dehumidifier on highest possible. Enjoy your 30% “dry room” when you’re feeling sweaty.

The entire West Coast is pretty much void of hot, sticky, sultry weather. If you enjoy being outdoors, there is absolutely no reason you can't figure out a way to live/move/work/retire/be happy..... there!
But on second thought, don't. We don't want any more people here.

R2 I feel your comment acutely. I am in my 50s and still in peri and I have never dealt with such a humid summer as this one, and with hot flashes. One cannot cool down without the help of A/C and a cold shower. It feels like you're melting from the inside, out.

can we talk about flooding and the mosquito aftermath? because, fuck those little suckers dead. I got 7 mosquito bites just taking the big guy pee- under a minute. I also believe the hot flashes and sweating brings more mosquitoes. fuckers.

I hate humidity more than anything. It's always dank and swampy here in Pittsburgh. I don't understand people who enjoy vacationing in New Orleans and other, even worse places. My life goal is to relocate to New Mexico.

I New Orleans better in the winter or is that area always humid?. I live in NorCal now not on the coast and it gets Horrible heat all summer. this summer has he 115 days. We live with fire all summer but it doesn't get humid here.

R3 Toronto here, humid as fuck, all summer.
I can't live without my dehumidifier. It runs constantly in summer and really improves air quality. You need AC as well, obviously, but some AC systems do not dehumidify (closed loop forced air systems like in condos).

I'm telling you, a cheap window AC is the economical answer for high humidity control.
Use it in addition to your central HVAC.
It can economically remove excess humidity between cycles of your central system.

Wisconsin isn't humid, stop the whining.

All these years, I've been mocking my buds "up home" for whining about the humidity. "Believe me, it's a lot worse in Florida!"
Guess what? After three days on the Jersey shore, I take it all back.
Speaking of which, may I never set foot in NJ again.

I also live in SE Wisconsin and feel the same, but with me it's more sinus related. We've had a lot of rain this summer and everything is in full bloom

Yes it really does. I live in central Texas and lately it's been very humid. Even though I grew up near the gulf, south Texas, it's something I can barely tolerate anymore. I feel your pain r4. I too am at perimenopause and it's torture! Taking estrogen helps, it also makes me horny lol. Kinda like going through puberty. Thank god for a/c and fans. I don't know how people coped before electricity.

Houston here. I get exhausted walking from my front door to my car. House set at 72 and I rarely venture out until the evening though it's still humid but the sun isn't blasting.
People forget that back in the really old days more open grassy space and dirt roads existed to absorb heat. The concrete jungle we've created just bounces that heat back up. It was actually cooler back then though I still think they wire way too many clothes.

OP, I couldn't even handle hot summers at 30, so I don't think this is an "'old' person" thing. (That plus 54 isn't "old" except on DL.) While unfortunately I can't make it this year, I typically head up to Canada for at least two weeks in July or August, though OTOH obviously Jasper is off the table for now.
R20, my mom moved to Philly last year, and I *tried* to warn her that it's fucking miserable in the summer. I admittedly didn't expect that the Northeast would be hotter than Texas this summer, which is largely bizarre, but her response was always, "I can just head to the shore if it gets hot." Now she's pissed that her summer is "ruined" because she didn't listen to me (pissed at herself, that is), and didn't expect the shore to be nearly as bad as Center City.

my perimenopausal sisters- I feel your pain!!
it's going to be 90 here today and the air is so thick it's like walking through a steam room. seems to help keep the Mosquitos afloat though so I bet they appreciate it :/

eldergay who grew up in 1950s desert southwest with traditionally lower humidity
the trend to go to complete air conditioning in this century has it's drawbacks.
as opposed to the lower cost evaporative cooling from previous era.
now you are in and out of AC constantly to 115 degrees....very difficult on the ol' bod.

I am sick to my stomach today and had to walk up to the corner store (1 block) to get a Coca-Cola for my stomach. My glasses immediately fog up the second I step outside and the condensation drips down my face from m6 glasses. like, it's not bad enough I am sweating and sick, but I have to look and feel even sweatier than I actually am. my poor air conditioner can't keep up with dehumidifing my living room and the mosquitoes are lined up outside just waiting for me. yesterday I sprayed myself with deet to take the dog out for a while, got everything but my actual face. 2 seconds later I had an entire face full of fucking mosquitoes.

If you can’t handle humidity in WI you should retreat to Canada
