Thanks for the new thread.
I look forward to all of your support through this difficult day as it marks the start of when I will officially lose the ability to call myself tied for the Most Decorated US Gymnast at the Olympics. While my voodoo doll really came through for me in Tokyo, it seems that I'm no longer favored by the Gods and that little cheating, drug using, bitch, Simone will officially overtake me.
I give my gratitude to all of you, my fans, who love and adore me, for sticking by me and acknowledging that cunt Simone could never wear a scrunchie or dance as elegantly to violins as I did.

It's really terrible how the media puts everyone else on the taem on the back burner and focuse solely on Simone by calling her the "headliner." It's really a spit in the face to the rest of her teammates who are often better than she is, and don't need illegal drugs to perform.

Twisties, my ass.
She just didn't want to be at those Olympics in 2021 because there weren't enough FANS to adore her and shower her with cheers.
So the loser just dropped out.
Now that everyone's in Paris and the crowds are back, all of a sudden she's in "champion mode" again.
Fuck her.

It's ridiculous that a skill can be considered so dangerous that you can have someone spot you on it and take a deduction. The rule should absolutely be that if you need to have someone spot you on your skill, you should not be allowed to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 28, 2024 10:32 AM |
You should also not be able to fall or go out of bounds and still be competitive. Those mistakes should force you out of the competitin.

My crush for Olympic gold U.S. swimmer Jack Alexy began last night when i looked into those moody, sexy deep blue eyes fringed with heavy black lashes (eat your heart out, J.D. Vance) and set off by heavy black brows. I literally gasped and got an instant erecrion.
He. Is. Beautiful.
6’8” which is too tall, and with the long race horse-like body proportions that don’t ususally turn me on. But that face, those eyes, the nose (which hints at Big Dick Face though not on evidence of what one can see in his speedos) the pretty pink lips have me aflame. The boat ride was a disaster with a bunch of athletes looking miserable in the rain and USA especially going near the end when it was dark and rainy didn’t help. By the time they arrived at the Eiffel Tower, people tired and a lot of them left. The only redeeming quality was Celine Dion.

[quote] Terminated again: Australia's Titmouse hands Ledecky another Olympic defeat
NANTERRE, France (AP) — It was billed as one of the most anticipated races of the Paris Olympics.
Ariarne Titmus turned it into a blowout.
Titmus left Katie Ledecky in her wake on a raucous opening night at La Defense Arena, leading from start to finish to win the 400-meter freestyle Saturday.
Titmus, the Australian star known as “Terminator,” handed Ledecky a second straight Olympic defeat in an event the American won at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
With her fingernails painted Aussie yellow, Titmus strolled on deck with the confidence of a reigning champion, flashing a big smile and waving to the fans.
Titmus knew she was the swimmer to the beat, even with one of the greatest ever in the lane next to her.
Then, she went out and proved it.
Titmus actually faced her stiffest challenge from Canadian 17-year-old phenom Summer McIntosh but won comfortably in 3 minutes, 57.49 seconds.
McIntosh claimed the silver in 3:58.37. Ledecky wasn't even close, settling for bronze in 4:00.86.
“My legs are a bit tired, but I’m just relieved more than anything,” Titmus said. “I probably felt the expectation and pressure for this race more than anything in my life, to be honest, and I’m pretty good at handling the pressure of it.”
Ledecky, 27, remains at six individual gold medals in her brilliant career, still the most of any female swimmer in Olympic history.
But, she couldn't find the speed to chase down Titmus.
“I just didn’t have it on the last 200 or 250 that way I wanted to,” Ledecky said. “I felt like my first 150 was pretty good. I went out with the field and felt like I was within striking distance. I just couldn’t kick in into that next gear that I would have wanted to finish it out.”

Flash poll:
Should medal table rank be based on overall medals or overall medals weighted by type (i.e, 3 points for gold, 2 points for silver, 1 point for bronze), such that a country with 2 golds would be higher on the medal table than a country with 5 bronzes. I'm not sure when it started, but you see more of the weighting method than in previous eras.
IMO overall medal count and gold medal count are worthy of independent recognition.

In the UK they always report the medal table in gold / silver/ bronze ranking, rather than total numbers of medals. They also don't count 4th places in the table
Using R66 's example the table would be:
1. Australia - 4 / 2 /0 2. France - 3 / 2 / 2 3= Japan 3 / 2 / 1 3= Rep. Korea 3 / 2/ 1 5. United States 2 / 4 / 3

A country with ‘only’ 10 golds should be ranked ahead of a country with 3 golds, 10 silvers and 15 bronzes.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | July 28, 2024 8:38 PM |
For people who know the sport....when did not sticking the landing in gymnastics become no big deal? I know they still get a small deduction but it seems to me like nobody really cares. Simone flies out all over the place and still wins. You can fall all over the place and still qualify or medal it seems like. When did this change? I remember the crowd used to gasp- gasp!- if somebody even hopped backwards a little bit.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | July 28, 2024 8:48 PM |
R93 it happened when they changed the code and scoring system so that you could just pile on all these points, but they didn't update the penalties. Essentially as long as you put a bunch of skills in your routines that are worth a lot of points, it doesn't even matter if you can execute it or not, because even if you fall, the deduction isn't more than the skill is worth. That's why you can see so many gymnasts fall off equipment or go out of bounds and they can still medal. That's the biggest mistake of the code.
The most laughable thing is that something like stepping out of bounds on floor is only 1/10 of a point deduction, which is what it was 30 years ago. The differnece being that 30 years ago 1/10 of a point was supposed to be crucial and would knock you out of the medals (think Kim Zmeskal). Now it's still 1/10 but who cares when the point values are so high? Especially if you're Simone and you can just add skill after skill. 1/10 is not going to have the same impact on her as it will someone else who doesn't have as much difficulty.
What they should have done was make falls and step outs a mandatory percentage off your base score. Like 5% off for a step out, 10% off for a fall, etc. That way the deductions are equally weighted.
That's why Simone would have never have had the career she has now in the old system since she can never stay in bounds.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | July 28, 2024 8:59 PM |
Actually, if they were to revise the deductions as a percentage it should be 10% deduction for each step out and 20% deduction for each fall.
For some perspective, there's a gymnast competing a bar routine that is valued at 17 points. Under the current system she can fall twice and still win Gold.

I don't remember a narrator explaining the reason for the entry via Paris's famous sewers. Frankly, this segment set the wrong tenor from the git-go. Like, are we on the River Styx?
And the boats. Totally preventing too many athletes from bring seen clearly.
I really don't care if la famille Legend is in attendance.
Team USA Women's Gymnastics outfits: Upon close viewing one can see all the red, white, and blue sequins, but otherwise they are lost amidst all the black.
Team USA Women's Synchronized Diving suits: Just say "No."
Team USA Men's Gymnastics: Rooting for Stephen "Glasses" Nedoroscik. I read once that James Dean's iconic sexy squint was caused by his refusal to wear his eyeglasses for acting. Stephen had that James Dean look when he took to the pommel horse.
Team USA Women's Gymnastics: I think SB will win All-Around and Individual Floor Ex, but that Romania will win the Individual Balance Beam in a shocker.
Paris: Outstanding! There was one shot during a Peacock pause of the Eiffel Tower with a very small cluster of skyscrapers in the background. It really showed how Paris has maintained her beautiful architecture as the city's true masterpiece, basically what King Charles has spent decades trying to preserve for London.
And the use of Versailles as a venue was brilliant.
Surfing in French Polynesia: Brought back fond memories of "Adventures in Paradise" and the gorgeous Gardner McKay. Colin Jost was there why? To be smarmy about the word "lei" (about which he felt compelled to mention his verbal restraint) when telling us about the mother who encouraged her daughter in the sport? The waves were a huge, or, more accurately, a small disappointment. All I could "see," really, were the shark-baiting dangling legs of the photographers. Cue "Jaws" theme....
Team USA Men's Basketball: Did anyone think Serbia had a chance?
Retrospective Snippets: Ah, yes: Mark Spitz. None more stunning, before or since. And I don't mean medalling!

I think it's because scores aren't capped. In the 10 era, a landing deduction really mattered because most (if not all) of the top gymnasts were doing routines that had a 10 start value. Now, athletes can just fill their routines with difficult skills and there's no cap. Add another acrobatic element on beam and get MORE points. Simone's routines (at least most of them) generally have very high relative start values compared to most other (if not all) gymnasts, so a landing deduction matter less. That's the case for any athletes with a routine on any apparatus that has a comparatively high start value.
Make no mistake, athletes should be rewarded for doing more, but I still sometimes think there should be a cap (a fairly high cap, but still, a cap) - so instead of "how much can I possibly fit in" it becomes "can a fit enough in to meet the cap and distinguish myself through execution and form so I can beat the elite group gymnasts who also meet the cap."
But many would understandably argue otherwise - why shouldn't an athlete be able to stack points with no limit if they have that capability. I totally get that view.

Agree. They should be rewarded for more difficulty if they can properly and successfully compete the skill. If not, that's where a percentage based deduction would come into play. It would ensure that everyone's deductions are worth the same and would dissuade an athlete from just stacking skills for points that they can't execuute well.

Simone makes no sense. She is publicly stating she is over the Tokyo Olympics and wants people to stop talking about it (Glad you're over it, what about your teammates that aren't), but at the same time she's the one that also named the team the Redemption team and is telling the media they're there for redemption.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | July 28, 2024 9:51 PM |
R107 the Romanian team is such an interesting case study of a once dominating power completely dropping off the face of the earth.

All this talk of swimmers reminds me of guys that claim a swimmers build on the apps. Few actually have it. Either they swam back in high school and have gained a few pounds or they're drug addicted twinks that have never done it a moment in their lives. Less common these days to see that description, but still funny.

It's not really hard to understand the change in gymnastics. There is a difficulty score that gets higher the more difficult elements you successfully put into your routine. Then there is an execution score that starts at 10 and goes down based on your errors. These scores are added togethwr to give the total score for that gymnast on the apparatus.
The judging panels for these are separate. And the execution judges are BRUTAL. No one is overlooking anything. An execution score of 9 or above is really good. No one gets a perfect ten in execution. There are always errors to be found. And yes, those crazy almost falls are worse than little hops and that's reflected in the execution score. But getting that D score as high as possible is the key to winning at their level.

I can’t be the only one that’s not a fan of Simone Bile’s gymnastics. It’s very ugly to me. I haven’t seen her stick a landing in anything. It used to be that when you fall off the balance beam, it’s game over for AA gold. The only reason why she’s able to do all these difficult moves is because she’s only 3 feet tall and that’s unfair to the rest of the girls. I missed the grace and beauty of the likes of Khorkina, Comaneci, and Shannon Miller.

R68 was that the race where Ledecky had to tell the other competitor she was in her lane? It was supposed to be "accidental" but seemed more like it was to get in her head a la Katarina Witt.

For all the accolades and athleticism, Simone is a circus act.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | July 28, 2024 11:08 PM |
Oh stop it, R114. They both laughed about Titmus putting her gear in the wrong box before the start of the race. Nobody was in Ledecky’s lane. She lost, by a significant margin.
What’s worse is the focus on Ledecky coming third - the Canadian Summer McIntosh swam a great race for Silver but this was ignored by NBC.

R127 since the majority of Titmus’s times were set in domestic Australian competitions and since her closest rival, with whom she swapped the world 200m record recently, is Australian and also her close friend and training partner (they share a coach), I’m pretty sure that she got to the gold medal by swimming faster, not mind games.

Japan's decision regarding their Women's Gymnastics team is so bizarre. They kicked off their most notable gymnast for violating their rules, but then did not replace her with their alternate, which they had... which then forces them to compete with one less member and no luxury of throwing out a score. This most likely jeopardizes their chances of making it into finals. People are saying that this was intentional to punish the team and make them angry at their captain, who broke the rules.

R156, she's hellbent on making my life miserable. That kind of motivation can get you through anything.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | July 29, 2024 1:50 AM |
So I was neutral on Biles going into this. But when I watched the American girls in the prelims on the balance beam, I couldn’t get over how tentative and sloppy they all were. Then just now they showed some of the Chinese and Italian women on the beam and they were so confident, graceful and elegant. They made the American girls look like horses by comparison.
So at one point earlier, while Biles was getting her ankle taped, one of her teammates came up to her after doing her thing and Biles gave her this huge, encouraging smile — which collapsed the second the girl turned her back on her to be replaced with a hard, calculating look.
And it’s also clear that Biles and the pretty blond (who is the tallest, slimmest on the American girl’s team) hate each other. When the blond fucked up her floor exercise (her specialty, destroying her chances at an individual medal) the other girls were sympathetic but not Biles, who went nowhere near her. Then the blond did really well in her vaults and the other girls rallied round to essentially congratulate her Biles was again nowhere to be seen.
My first takeaway is that the American female gymnastic team does not for a minute deserve their lofty reputation, they are distinctly mediocre, at least at this Olympics.
My second is that Simone Biles is a phony, and though strong and athletic is not at all as graceful and precise in execution as many of the women from other countries. Are the U.S. coaches emphasizing degree of difficulty (for the points) and strength over real skill and dancer-like elegance?

There's a lot you can fault and criticize Simone for but I think you're reaching on these two points. Simone wasn't aruond to console or congratulate Jade on floor or vault because Simone was next up to compete.

R162, I noticed that after Bars, there seemed to be tension between Suni and Jade, maybe because Suni had just edged Jade out. I wonder if Jade thought she was a lock for the second AA position since Suni needed an insane score to pass her.
They stayed on opposite sides of each other when taking photos after the event.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | July 29, 2024 2:07 AM |
Okay, Simone and Jade just hugged but I’m not buying it.
Biles is very strong, but I miss the grace, the dancer-like precision in arm and hand placement that female athletes from other countries have been showing. Is that old-fashioned? Sexist? I suppose it’s just a question of style and taste. But the American girls seem crude to me.

There may be tension between certain gymnasts, but I guarantee that a lot of you are reading too much into the few seconds of expressions you're seeing. Everyone in qualifying is super focused on themselves because they want to qualify on their own for AA and event finals and there's only two per country allowed. You will likely see more smiles and signs of friendship during team finals.
As for the Amercan ladies' reputation, they absolutely deserve it. That's why they finished so far ahead in qualifying despite some issues. And remember... there were major injuries during US trials. This team is made up of a few that weren't even expected to go before then. That's how deep the American field is

She wasn't the first to do a triple wolf turn... and she doesn't do 3 consecutive backflips, she does a backhandspring into two layout step outs, which she's not the first to do that either. That series has been routinely competed since the late 80s/90s.

I have mixed feelings about the Olympics. I like the opening ceremonies and seeing parts of Paris with the mysterious torch bearer— like the Louvre and the painted subjects leaving their paintings. I liked Gaga’s performance but I wish they had chosen someone French to perform.
The dancers on the sides were good and the horse on the Seine. I liked the women’s heads peaking out of the water and Marie Antoinette’s severed head. Celine was great and heartfelt. The singing in the Seine with the piano on fire was cool, too. The boat entrance was interesting and novel.
What I didn’t like was the emphasis on celebrities like it was a red carpet event. In fact I hated it. And when I think of sports, old potheads Snoop Dogg and Flava Flav don’t come to mind. WTF.
Why have a former NFL player and a talk show host at the opening ceremony. Were there no former Olympians available? Not one?

The idiots posting in this thread realize that Simone already has several Olympic golds, right? She competed in Rio all the way back in 2016 and in addition to team gold, won the AA, Vault, and FX (that's floor exercise for you "experts" that somehow don't know these things). Her many, many world championship golds and the Olympic medals she already has show that Tokyo was a fluke.

R247, Tokyo wasn't a fluke, but a revelation of her character. If we believe the whole twisters thing, then the twisters didn't just happen at team finals. If she had them, she should have withdrawn before the competition so that US could have substituted someone who was prepared to compete.

R263, I find Tom Daley and Tom Daley's husband's "public image" quite nauseating, especially when it's very different to what goes on in their private life, and I'm not a huge fan of surrogacy, but they way they've helped normalise same sex couples being parents is quite positive at a time when many influential people in the US want to remove their rights.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | July 29, 2024 11:51 AM |
R265, pretty much no-one with a public profile has a 'public image' has that reflects their private life (which they are completely entitled to keep private), so why is this example a big deal to you?
by Anonymous | reply 266 | July 29, 2024 12:23 PM |
Daley and Daley's husband push a more wholesome public image of being devoted to each other and hands on parents, when they fuck around constantly, take drugs, are horrible to service staff and leave much of the childcare to Daley's mother.
Fucking around constantly and taking drugs is ok within reason - I was listening to George Michael earlier - but the management of the image when they've got a reputation for being unpleasant just grates.

U.S. men’s gymnastic team comes into competition at a time when support for men’s gymnastics at the college level is much diminished.
Make the top eight at the Olympics but only after a series of mediocre performances.
Helped by mistakes from the leading Japanese and Chinese teams (which get tremendous state support from their home countries) but buoyed by superb work from all five across the board (including the deluded Trumper) U.S. gets the Bronze medal, which no one would have predicted after their initial performance a couple of days ago.
Bronze may not seem like much but it’s a lot given this team’s setbacks and inherent problems. Will it help revive interest in men’s gymnastics in the States?

The US Men's Program is like China's Women's Program in gymnastics.... well, they're not as good as the Chinese women are but they are exactly the same type of headcases.
Will their medal help garner interest in the sport again in the states? Probably not.
Best case scenario, they'll follow the Chinese Women's lead, and get their technical scores and focus up in preparation for the next Olymics being in their backyards. Like the Chinese, they'll do really well and then immediately go back to being head cases again and fall off the face of the earth... but not as badly as Romania.

Simone Biles should have withdrawn from the competition when she realized she was injured. It jeopardizes the team's success. What if she falls or starts limping during the team's competition? She'll be out and the American team will not be able to sub in a replacement. As heroic as Kerri Strug was doing that vault on an injured leg, she could have impaired her leg for the rest of her life. It's not a good example for little girls who want to do gymnastics.

Those are two separate things. A gold medal count would rank by the number of golds. A medals count would rank by the number of medals, regardless of color.

A team with 10 Golds will always come ahead of a team with 11 bronze.

I watched Tyler Downs doing a livestream today on TikTok and he was with friend Jaye Patrick, female diver. She was reading comments and someone was asking about him and her and she repeatedly shouted, “He’s gay!” to explain why they couldn’t be together. Someone else wrote that she is his “twink handler”. She asked for someone to explain what that means it agreed that she could be in that role.
Andrew Capobianco was also there and someone on the chat said he looked like Jeffree Star, and Andrew didn’t know who that is. Andrew looked it up and said, “That’s fucking rude!”
by Anonymous | reply 370 | July 29, 2024 9:49 PM |
R367 it all depends on which table best presents the USA performance. At present the Americans are way down on total Golds compared to, among others, Japan, France, China and Australia, so R360 is going with total medals - America can’t be beaten by a bunch of foreigners!
He’ll switch over once the USA picks up some more Golds.

You are correct that that would be a gold medal ranking, with ties split by looking at the other medals. However, an Olympic medal count ranking would be ranked by total number of medals of all colors.

Tyler Downs is in that set of people who feel no need to say the sentence, “I’m gay,” but rather just live publicly as gay. Because he hasn’t stated the magic words, some people are afraid to label him, but he’s rightfully showing up anyway in gay Olympian lists.

This is the first time I've heard of an entire squad being made up that way.

I like Michael Phelps a lot.
Competing at the highest levels of sport over a sustained period — with the insane expectations placed on him — takes such a toll. And transitioning to a life without competition can be equally challenging.
He’s reckoned with his mental issues and helped normalize those struggles for other athletes and people in general.
He can wear his hair however he wants. A force for good.

The same thing happens with football in the UK. Players can't get into the England team and discover they have a Welsh, Scottish or Irish grandparent, or if they're from migrant families play for those countries. In the women's world cup last year there was a very pale girl playing for Nigeria who is English but qualifies through a Nigerian grandparent.

Those complaining about going out of bounds and falling and still winning a Gold. The actual very hard things the Chinese men, Japanese men, Simone Biles are able to do is out of this world. They create a lot of kinetic energy and going “out of bounds” or falling and still winning Gold is fine with me. They can do things NO OTHERS CAN TOUCH. It’s not like they can’t do the skills in the air. I LOVE a stuck landing and the commentators have said the floors are bouncier so it is not as easy to stick. The Chinese men fell too many times. I agree, maybe a stiffer penalty for some things is warranted, but don’t diminish what those like Biles can do. The other athletes just cannot rake up the points. They aren’t gifted enough.
Honestly, they were too harsh on the athletes back in the day when a tiny hop on the landing crushed your dreams.

by Anonymous | reply 549 | July 30, 2024 10:42 PM |
The gymnasts are already rewarded for being able to do the big skills. They should absolutely be penalized more if they don't do it successfully. Because they don't penalize it more significantly, you have more gymnasts doing skills theyre not technically able to pull off or master, but they don't care because they know if they fall, they're still rewarded for it. I personally think if they did penalize the mistakes more, it would help push the competitiveness of the sport and make it more interesting.
People get tired of watching one or two people just dominant the sport. There's no competition.
If you can do the big skills great, get rewarded for it and win. If you do a big skill, and fall, and it makes the competition more competitive, even better.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | July 30, 2024 10:48 PM |
R550 They have mastered the skills. Hops or going out of bounds does NOT = not mastering their skills. Constantly falling? That would be not mastering the skill. I don’t see that happen. Hardly anyone stickers their landings. A lot go out of bounds.

by Anonymous | reply 553 | July 30, 2024 11:28 PM |
R553 Yes it is. She takes the deductions, but she mastered the skill. She LANDS it. They ALL hop. There’s hardly any sticks now for men or women. The FLOOR IS BOUNCIER. When you’re powerful, you bounce more.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | July 30, 2024 11:37 PM |
No, it really isn't. If you can't consistently land in bounds doing your pass, you haven't mastered it. What she's doing is taking the deductions in lieu of needing to master the skill and honing in her power required to do the skill. That's the problem, the deductions are so low, who cares if you fall or cant stay in bounds? You'll score big!
If the deductiosn were in fact more severe, like 10% of your base score instead of just 1/10, you would absolutely either re-work the skill so she can stay in bounds or omit it completely.
And she's not to blame for it. She's playing the code by stacking so much dififculty it doesn't matter if she falls or steps out. The code needs to be revised. It's ridiculous that they changed everything else but the 1/10 deduction.

What you're describing is the result of non-capped scores. If there's no limit to how how an athlete can score (e.g., 10), then that encourages stacking elements, and the more you stack, the less big a of a deal a specific deduction will be. When there's a cap, a two tenths landing deduction matters. It matters less when the there's no limit to how high an athlete can score. But, then you have to ask if scores should be capped. If they were, I'd think the cap would need to be fairly high - you still want to reward athletes who can do more than other athletes. But at some point does doing "more" not really add anything overall. Well, it depends. If "more" is at the expense of clean routines and good form vs. if "more" is generally executed well. I think there's a medium somewhere. Cap routines at 15 or 15.5 or something.

What the hell has happened to the Chinese women? They usually range from podium-level (i.e., at least a bronze) to right off the podium in 4th. And they usually have at least someone great on beam and bars.

R586, you can have an open ended scoring system and reward athletes for what they can do and also implement percentage deductions so they are fairly and equally deducted for the mistakes they make. A percentage deduction allows a fall or a step out to have equal severity for all athletes, regardless of what they're start values are.

Who is “they”, R584?

R587 they do what they do best... implode. It's literally what they do at most of the Olympics they go to.
And they do have two great beam and bars workers. I believe the two routines with the highest difficulty for those events come from the Chinese Team.

But but but R585, if Silver and Bronze weren’t included then the US eh wouldn’t be leading the medal table according to R548!
And we can’t have that.

These bitches like Terry Gannon can really take a page from Will Smith and kindly keep my damn name out their mouths!
Kindly stop reminding everyone that Simone beat the record I held for TWENTY EIGHT years.

After four days of the swimming comp it’s great see the spread of gold medals across multiple countries instead of just among the usual suspects:
China 4 gold
Australia 4 gold
Italy 2 gold
USA 2 gold
Canada 1 gold
South Africa 1 gold
Ireland 1 gold
Great Britain 1 gold
France 1 gold
Japan 1 gold

"I just seen that sports presenter down the bikini waxers"
"Clare Balding?"
"Nah, she loves a full bush"

It’s great for Ireland, isn’t it, R596? They also picked up a Bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke today (or yesterday, depending on where you are).
Good stuff!
