He was great as Iron Man.

Why does Dr. Doom have to be in every FF movie?
It's like having Luthor in almost every Superman movie.

r8: But you don't have the Joker in every Batman movie, or the Green Goblin in every Spider-Man movie.
Why not have the FF fight the Puppet Master for once, or the Frightful Four?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 28, 2024 2:42 AM |
Because Batman has many iconic villains. As does Superman. FF specific villains aren’t iconic outside of Doom

I’m sure he had to lose weight for the role. They’re provided nutritionists and personal trainers when they take on these roles
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 28, 2024 3:02 AM |
See this annoys me because now D Jr. is just going to be playing Tony Stark as shtick. It comes down to: what is an Avengers movie anymore? Is it still an Avengers movie when the Avengers are no longer the Avengers?
Fantastic Four is introducing what exactly? It’s set in the sixties but in an alternate universe. Why is Tony Stark an old man in the alternate 1960s?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 28, 2024 3:04 AM |
R12 - 2005 FF had a budget of $87M not counting marketing which can double or even triple that amount. It made $333M worldwide. Not a bomb but not a raging hit, especially when compared to the Marvel Universe about to unleash itself upon the world or the then-current X-Men movies. And yes, I know it spawned a sequel, which killed the franchise for awhile.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 28, 2024 3:05 AM |

then why do they only use Luthor and General Zod?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 28, 2024 3:06 AM |
R16 stop speaking about what you don’t know. Youre speaking of 2005 marketing budgets in a modern lens. Back then they didn’t spend nearly as much to market as they do now. Not to mention FF had a lot of ad placements aka they were paid by companies to display their merchandise.
A sequel was rushed out because it did well.
Stay in your lane.

$333 million in 2005 was a lot. Very few movies made the money you see these days. Spider-Man was an outlier back then. X-Men made less than Fantastic Four but was considered a massive success.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 28, 2024 3:32 AM |
Okay, I have to ask it.
Is someone going to notice that Doom looks like Tony Stark? Or are they just going to skip over that part?
I'd love them to explore the Stark character in a different way - this just seems like desperation on the part of the casting director.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 28, 2024 4:32 AM |
What a stupid casting decision.
ALso, really annoyed that all that Kang build up through movies and series is just going to be ignored now.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 28, 2024 4:36 AM |
Every time a Fantastic Four movie is in the works, everyone makes a big deal out of it as if they’ve ever done anything at the box office.
It’s a licensing situation. Certain IP’s have a time period before the rights are put back on the market. I think as long as an IP is in production, studios can retain the rights.
Like for example, Dimension Films lost the rights to “Halloween” by 2015 after going only 6 years without making a movie.
So this is all bollocks.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 28, 2024 5:01 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 28, 2024 5:23 AM |
Jeez, RDJ. Do something else. Everyone knows he made a fortune playing Tony Stark, he doesn’t need the money. That was a different era of Marvel. Just let it be. He’ll regret doing this when people say all he can play is “Tony Stark” or it’s not as good as Ironman, etc. Just shows how much he needs the attention.
Also shows he can’t really develop his own material or get anything else made.
Also, Vanessa Kirby - just taking Emily Blunt’s scraps. She’d probably marry Krasinski if they ever got divorced.

To R6, R15, R31
You do see the RDJr Doom is in a movie called AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, right?
It's NOT a Fantastic Four movie, it's an Avengers movie.
And, from speculation of comics nerds it could be based on a Multi-Verse "Variant" comic run where Anthony Stark is Dr. Doom --- Or, it's just fun casting letting RDJr play a new character in the MCU
Either way, it's not a Fantastic Four movie. Galactus is going the be the baddie in the next FF movie
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 28, 2024 8:40 AM |
R33, here...
Ok, now I've actually read OPs title and noticed it WRONGLY says "Fantastic Four"
Now i know why some commenters didn't know it's an AVENGERS MOVIE and not a FF movie
So, my R33 was for OP mainly I guess
I mean, Jemus OP, it was very blatantly stated he was Doom in "Avengers: Doomsday" <<--- it's pretty much right there in the title.
Sorry to R6, R15, R31 as I missed OPs wrongwrongwrong title mentioning Fantastic Four.

There was a comic run about ten years ago called Infamous Iron Man, which had an antiheroic Victor Von Doom acting as Iron Man.
I wonder if Avengers: Doomsday is going to borrow from the Emperor Doom story from the late 80s. Kang Dynasty took its title from a series that ran in 2001, but it also had a very large set piece where the Avengers surrendered to Kang after he launched a devastating attack on Washington DC, which really went over like a lead balloon after 9/11.
The Emperor Doom story had him using Purple Man to warp reality so that the world thought he was ruler, and only Wonder Man knew anything was wrong. Since there’s a Wonder Man series coming, should we hear about David Tennant coming back to the MCU…

Excellent contribution as always, VotN/R49. I’m wondering if they’ll have a similar desert abduction story as our MCU’s Tony Stark for this Earth’s Victor Von Doom (though maybe set in the Balkans). But instead of the suit being built in the cave, he’ll bungle some experiment that gives him powers and we have our MCU antihero “I…am…Doom!”
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 28, 2024 2:13 PM |
I would love to see David Tennant in the MCU. I still think he's sexy as hell.
I love RDJ but this is either going to be brilliant or - much more likely - a disaster. It will only work if he plays Doom as the opposite of Stark - someone glacial and humorless. Doom is a control freak.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 28, 2024 2:55 PM |
R37 it was a hit at the time. Yes. It was. Especially for a Marvel character film. DC movies always did well at the box office. Marvel films didn’t. Blade was the first semi-hit a Marvel character had. Spider-Man was the only big box office hit Marvel had for a while. X-Men made $296 million worldwide and was deemed a big hit. Why? Because it was the best Marvel had at the time.

It seems a very strange move. Downey Jr. was so iconic as Iron Man, it seems unimaginable that anyone would be able to watch him as Dr Doom and not see Tony Stark. It will be very confusing I think. It will take me out of the movie. It will be uncanny and really difficult to keep suspension of disbelief going.

R59 you are having an autistic meltdown
Do you need a Lil Buddy?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | July 28, 2024 6:18 PM |
It’s a parody of the genre. It’s completely metatextual. The idea of film “worlds” being different based on studio licensing deal from twenty years ago is itself ridiculous. The average person does not care that 20th Century Fox doesn’t exist anymore. Fox’s universes didn’t even acknowledge each other.
Speaking of studios, it is ironic that Marvel has basically replicated one of the most unpopular aspects of WarnerBros/DC’s Snyderverse films, which was killing off Superman in Batman V Superman and then having home come back, but as evil (this never came to fruition because Justice League Part 2 was cancelled, but the storyline was set up in BVS.) People called that decision lazy back then, and this decision is just as lazy.
At this point I don’t know if Feige should be in charge any more. It seems like too much power is concentrated into his singular vision, which no longer takes into account the reality that people are tired of superhero films and tired of multiverses. Rather than saying, “Let’s try to do something else,” he just doubled down on his worst instincts. Which is exactly what happened with Zack Snyder, he took the criticism about Man of Steel very personally and doubled down on the most controversial aspects in BVS and made one of the worst superhero movies of all time.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 28, 2024 6:34 PM |
R83, I generally agree with you save for one thing.
Evil Superman is a contradiction in terms, at least cinematically. There is no indication that anything in Superman would ever lead him down such a path. In fact, evil Batman would be far more obvious a choice.
Tony Stark is a deeply damaged, conflicted and often frightening character. It doesn't take much to imagine an evil version evolving from what we know about his intelligence, addiction issues and family background. If that's the true identity of Doom this time around, RDJ may very well pull it off. But it would mean a completely new approach to the persona - someone cold, calculating, of limited emotional interest and range - the antithesis of how Iron Man was played.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 28, 2024 6:40 PM |
Deadpool 3 was 100% a love letter and send off to the FOX properties. All those forgotten and smaller or more unsuccessful characters trapped in the void, Deadpool having to travel through timelines to find a Wolverine who can fill the void his universe lost when Wolverine died in Logan. It’s why we saw Johnny Storm, Elektra, Blade, etc. and Gambit said he was born in the void.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 28, 2024 6:51 PM |
R84 not Snyder’s Superman. Snyder characterized Superman in BVS as deeply self-loathing and ambivalent about using his powers to help people. I read one analysis that Snyder treats Superman as an anti-Jesus, and having him be resurrected only to become evil completed the parallel.
It’s extremely nihilistic but starts to make sense when you realize Snyder was raised Christian Scientist.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 28, 2024 6:52 PM |
Superman was afraid to use his powers to help people because he always received backlash and hate from the public for doing so.
BvS is awesome and I stand by that.

Downey's deal includes private jet travel, dedicated security and a whole “trailer encampment.”

Jesus Christ Popcrave sucks.
The 80 million is for the RUSSOS.

Most likely, $50 million per picture with performance escalators instead of backend.
Unfortunately, a colossal waste of money given how unpopular this announcement is.

At this point I think Feige is writing his own obituary at Marvel; the idea that you are spending $100 million on just star and director of an FX heavy film is grotesque. Endgame’s budget was up to $400 million; this is one quarter of the budget of endgame just for three people to show up to work. And for basically a Fantastic Four movie. With $50 million per film going to someone who will be wearing a mask in most of his scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | July 30, 2024 4:38 AM |
Definitely a complete waste of money. They'd do better casing an unknown and creating a new star, than stunt-casting an old has-been that has already been in a dozen freaking movies in the franchise.
