This is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s part tragic, part comedy and comments on such of contemporary American life— poverty, the obesity of epidemic, the commodification of fried chicken.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 26, 2024 6:56 PM |
R2 Mariah Carey actually gave a brilliant understated performance in this. That was a competitive Oscar season. Had she not done Gigli she probably would have gotten an Oscar nod. However it wasn’t enough screen time to make academy members forget Gigli

Any Lee Daniel fans. Check out Butler. Don’t let the Oscar snubs fool ya. It a very good, very well acted commercial film. Mariah Carey also has a cameo in the beginning; she plays the title characters mom who gets raped and then her husband, the butler’s dad gets shot in the head after he nonverbally calls out the owner’s son on the sharecrop planation in which they live.

[quote] Alex Pettyfer is so beautiful. He deserves a 2nd chance at stardom.
This is a somewhat unusual question, and perhaps this is not the right place to ask it. Is there something particularly appealing or special to black people about Alex Pettyfer? I’ve seen posters who identify themselves as black on other entertainment sites who go gaga about Alex, in a way white-identified posters don’t seem to, despite his well-known difficult personality. He’s a white guy from the UK, so I don’t know why they would cream their panties particularly for him as opposed to, say, Glen Powell.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 26, 2024 9:46 PM |
Because we blacks know beauty. You think we’d ever prop up someone like Timothy Chamalet. I believe Channing Tatum was hating on him. Team Alex.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 26, 2024 9:50 PM |
Glen Powell is not good looking to me. He is not ugly obviously but does nothing for me and I’m usually partial to bro-ey white guys. He is plain Jane and it’s irritating that Hollywood is trying to force him down our throats as a sex symbol. Can he at least make another hit movie. He let that Tom Cruise success go to his head.

I know it's been commented above but Mo'Nique deserved that Oscar and any other acting award available to her that year. She struck gold with that one scene.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 31, 2024 4:34 AM |
We see Mary's mom in one scene and she seems totally disapproving of her behavior but it's hard to believe that Mary's behavior didn't spring from things in her own childhood. Almost certainly she herself was molested and she says tellingly that she was only doing what her mother told her to do. After Precious says her mom won't see her anymore, it's almost like Mary has a flashback to the time Carl started molesting Precious and remembering the horror and confusion before she rationalized that in order to keep him, she had to let him continue molesting her.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 31, 2024 5:01 AM |

Most abusers, men or women, were abused too. Still not worthy of pity
by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 31, 2024 8:51 PM |
The scene was surprising because Precious doesn't want Mariah to work with her anymore because she's aware that it was doing a number on her. Despite what she'd been through, she still had empathy. And I loved the moment at the end where Mary tries to get Miss Weiss to help her and grabs her only to have Weiss pull her arm back as if to say, "don't fucking touch me".

I wanted to add that in addition to Mary having been sexually abused as a girl, I think it's fairly obvious that Carl was regularly beating the shit out of her as well. Why did she quickly clam up when he told her to "shut her fat ass up" while he was molesting Precious. I could believe that Carl was not beating Precious and that caused more friction between her and Mary and in her sick mind, she decided that his lack of beatings was proof that he preferred their daughter to her.
