“Drop Dead Gorgeous” Turns 25 This Week

And it’s still a DL classic. Kirstie Alley screaming at hicks. Drunken priests. Interpretive dance. Lutefisk. And Allison Janney as Loretta, Queen of the Trailer Park.

I like the movie more each time I rewatch it.

by Anonymousreply 1July 26, 2024 2:30 PM

It's a classic. I tried to see it in the movie theater and it disappeared after two weeks. Same experience with Idiocracy and both of them are in my Top 10

by Anonymousreply 2July 26, 2024 3:17 PM

I really think "Smile" and is better and funnier.

God I love this movie. Saw it with my summer fling the summer between freshman and sophomore years in college. We got high in his car and then saw it. What a hot fuck.

I thought it was so good I even bought the CD soundtrack.

When it came out on VHS, I made my college friends watch it. My future husband loved it and we probably watched a half dozen times the spring of 2000.

by Anonymousreply 7July 27, 2024 4:59 PM

I was 14 when came out in theaters. I remember seeing the trailers. But, my local theater never screened it. I saw it the summer of 2000 on cable. I bought the DVD a few years later, but lost it during a move. I bought a blu-ray copy and maybe I'll watch it over the weekend.

by Anonymousreply 8July 27, 2024 5:01 PM

One of my favorite rainy day movies I can watch over and over again.

by Anonymousreply 9July 27, 2024 5:03 PM

Not a bad performance in the movie. Becky’s talent was hilarious and made it funnier with Loretta and Annette laughing their heads off

by Anonymousreply 10July 27, 2024 5:15 PM

I always thought it was a fantastic movie, and has a special meaning for me.

When I ran away from home as a senior in high school, I lived in my car and went to the clubs every night. The first real friendship I made was with an older mentor type who’d run away at the same age.

He was a bartender/stripper/escort/minor drug dealer/satyr with a genius IQ and the best taste in art, music and just about everything else of anyone I’ve ever met. He also had a heart of gold and would give a stranger his last dollar, the shirt off his back, and a blow job.

He took me under his wing and under his roof and made sure I didn’t get into trouble. He taught me about gay culture, history, humor, and relationships. I worshiped him and he relished being gay Willy Wonka to my wide-eyed guttersnipe Charlie.

When this movie came out, I’d been staying with him for about six months, had graduated from high school, and was training for my first real job, with American Airlines that he got me through one of his regular Johns. I was working and studying for my admission test and didn’t go see it with him. When I got home and walked into the den, he was sitting smoking a joins and the minutes he saw me he screamed “We’ll here’s Dianne Sawyer!”

From that day until this, his nickname for me has been Diane Sawyer and some people I only know through him call me Dianne when they see me because they don’t even know my real name.

He swore that I was the gay twink version of Amber and, though he would never admit it, he was very much like Loretta. I’m definitely rewatching it this weekend and texting him to check in and tell him I love him.

"Take down the Goddamn Freda sign, ya lazy sons of bitches!"

by Anonymousreply 12July 27, 2024 5:29 PM

I never enjoyed this. I couldn’t relate having never had an imaginary friend as a child. However, the always adorable Phoebe Cates is adorable as always.

by Anonymousreply 13July 27, 2024 5:44 PM

That’s Drop Dead Fred, R13.

by Anonymousreply 14July 27, 2024 7:42 PM

Overrated cult classic. A little something for people who didn't "get" Heathers.

by Anonymousreply 15July 27, 2024 7:49 PM

I was nine years old when with this came out theatrically, but as a video store gayling of the early 2000s who was obsessed with horror movies, something about the glamorous cover art combined with the murderous plot of the film made me want to rent it. I was probably twelve when I saw it. I loved it then, but the humor only got better as I got older and rewatched it. The cast is phenomenal. I’ve always been a big Kirsten Dunst fan in general, and Kirstie Alley, god bless her—she was fucking hilarious in this movie. I know she was a bit of a Scieno nut in real life, but she was a talented comedic actress.

by Anonymousreply 16July 27, 2024 8:00 PM

She was funny as hell R16. The supporting cast were all top notch and the dialogue was hilarious. We watched it as a family one year at the holiday gathering and most of them didn't get it. Maybe too off beat and subversive? The stuff I was laughing at were things the rest of them didn't laugh at. Maybe they lack a satire gene.

by Anonymousreply 17July 27, 2024 8:34 PM

It's a hilarious film. I have always found the way in which the characters casually show how insane they are is what makes it so funny, as well as endearing. It's superbly written and everything is delivered very naturally, so as to ensure that the 'mockumentary' aspect is never lost.

It's a great film that should be much more popular than it already is.

I loved the scene of the nurse wheeling Mary around the pageant during the Melissa Manchester lip-synching number.

by Anonymousreply 19July 27, 2024 11:12 PM

The screenwriter was Minnesotas Junior Miss in 1985 and based the film on her experiences competing in that pageant. Her name is Lona Williams and she ended up being the 1st runner up at the national pageant.

As a screenwriter she was a one hit wonder.

Here’s the 1985 America’s Junior Miss pageant hosted by Caitlyn Jenner and Mary Frann.

by Anonymousreply 20July 28, 2024 3:24 AM

Sorry here’s the link. One of production number in this pageant were parodied in Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Lona Willams did write another screenplay that was produced. But, she didn't like that her original script was toned down and the screenwriter was credited as Mandy Nelson.

I remember watching this as a kid. I thought Denise Richard's was SO beautiful. Looking back, she really was. Her facial proportions, her hair, the body.

by Anonymousreply 23July 28, 2024 3:33 AM

Will Sasso stole every scene he was in.

Oh, real nice R24. You know the babysitter's dead!

by Anonymousreply 27July 28, 2024 4:38 PM

I love the beauty pageant elders at the state competition, drunk off their asses on camera.

"I can lookit this glass, and say it's half-full. Which in the beauty pageant biz means 'WHERE THE HELL'S MY WAITER?'"

"Oh, somebody get a mop and a bucket!"

"That bitch from Wisconsin!"

I remember it popped on Hulu about five or six years ago for awhile and then was on HBO Max for a bit. The movie isn't even available for digital purchase.
