The thought of swimming in water thousands of feet deep is terrifying!

Swim calls on US Navy vessels are a longstanding tradition allowing sailors to enjoy a break and swim in the open ocean. This practice, which dates back to at least World War II, involves sailors jumping off the ship into the water for relaxation and morale-boosting. The activity often occurs in calm, warm waters and can be accompanied by additional leisure activities like cookouts.

Safety measures during swim calls include posting armed guards, such as sharpshooters on the ship or in rigid-hulled inflatable boats, to watch for sharks and other potential dangers. The crew members take turns jumping from the ship, often using aircraft elevators that lower them closer to the water to reduce the risk of injury from high jumps.

Swim calls can involve various Navy vessels, from submarines to aircraft carriers, with the latter offering a dramatic experience due to their size and height above the water. This tradition allows sailors to unwind during long deployments and is often considered a highlight of their service time.

I don't know which is more terrifying, the shark or the guy shooting at it.

Those poor swimmers!

Oh please OP, the chance of getting chewed up and spat out in the ocean is infinitesimal. We sail loads with friends around the Pacific. The peace and quiet are the best parts, floating in the ocean is such a joy. Having said that my Mother never let her feet leave the ground when in the water. She never said why.

Get back to us when they're doing it naked.
