What is the profile of the average Datalounger?

Middle-aged. Fussy. Horny. Thinks he looks 20 years younger. College-educated. Watches 10 hours of TV per day?

Age and Generation

The average age of a DataLounge poster tends to skew older compared to more mainstream social media platforms. Many users fall within the 35-55 age range. This demographic includes those who have been part of the LGBTQ+ community during pivotal moments in history, such as the AIDS crisis and the fight for marriage equality. Their experiences and perspectives shape the discussions on the forum, often providing historical context to contemporary issues.

Gender and Sexual Orientation

While DataLounge is open to all, it is predominantly populated by gay men. This demographic has a significant influence on the forum's culture and the types of conversations that dominate the site. However, there are also lesbian, bisexual, and transgender users, along with a smaller number of straight allies. The discussions reflect a wide range of LGBTQ+ experiences, though the focus often remains on issues relevant to gay men.

Geographic Distribution

The majority of DataLounge users are from the United States, particularly urban areas with large LGBTQ+ populations such as New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. However, there is also a significant number of users from other countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and various parts of Europe. This international presence brings diverse viewpoints and cultural perspectives to the discussions.

Socioeconomic Status

DataLounge users generally represent a middle to upper-middle-class socioeconomic status. Many users are professionals in fields such as entertainment, media, and technology, industries known for higher concentrations of LGBTQ+ individuals. This socioeconomic background influences the forum's discourse, which often includes discussions about career, finances, and lifestyle.

Education

A high level of education is common among DataLounge users. Many posters hold college degrees, and a significant number have advanced degrees. This educational background contributes to the articulate and often intellectually stimulating nature of the discussions. Users frequently engage in debates about politics, culture, and social issues, drawing on their educational experiences.

Interests and Topics of Discussion

The interests of DataLounge users are varied, but there are common themes that recur on the forum. Entertainment and celebrity gossip are particularly popular, reflecting the community's historical connection to arts and culture. Political discussions are also frequent, especially regarding LGBTQ+ rights and broader social justice issues. Personal anecdotes and advice-seeking posts about relationships, health, and everyday life are common as well. Cultural and Social Dynamics

DataLounge has a unique culture shaped by its user base. The forum is known for its sharp wit, sarcasm, and sometimes acerbic tone. This cultural characteristic can be attributed to the demographic's shared experiences and the historical context of LGBTQ+ communities, which have often used humor as a coping mechanism and form of resistance.

Conclusion

The average demographic of a DataLounge poster is an older, well-educated, middle to upper-middle-class gay man from an urban area in the United States. However, the diversity within this average includes various genders, sexual orientations, nationalities, and socioeconomic backgrounds, all contributing to the rich and dynamic discussions that characterize the forum. This blend of backgrounds and experiences makes DataLounge a unique and vibrant online community within the broader landscape of LGBTQ+ digital spaces.

Right on, R33!

I much prefer The Data Lounge to any other social media platform or forum.

My particular obsession? I love the wit of many posters here, and I aspire to their level of wit. And I love the snakiness of the "Royals" posts.

by Anonymousreply 34July 26, 2024 12:20 PM

Circles on a Venn diagram,:

Men in their 50s and 60s who have bravely sacrificed lucrative and powerful positions in cockring sales to slather Mother's legs and feet with lotions. "I couldn't possibly think of leaving Mother to the care of my rich siblings -- She depends on me!"

Lesbians on fixed incomes.

Tsk-tskers who don't understand why all the rest of the world could apply sheer dedication to attaining spotless Ivy League backgrounds and sparkling careers against hardscrabble origins. At 69 they want to work until they can attain the highest level of Social Security benefits because they are worried that their $6M in accounts and $4.5M in real estate are insufficient cushion for their Golden Years. It's really very simple, they just set aside a large portion of their large salaries (and the larger salaries and notable inheritances of their husbands); "Why does everyone pretend it's difficult?"

The Sentimentals: gay men in the 50s and older stuck like bugs in amber in their glamorous pasts of Dynasty and Academy Awards parties, creaming their panties over Tom Selleck and Harry Hamlin and Designing Women and if the firm believe that everything in life post1980s has been pure shit.

Wal-Mart gays with takes of Dollar Store favorite products and traders if recipes involving (lots of) mayonnaise. Many have endless hard luck tales and more stories of the men who wronged them than there are pearls on a triple strand necklace.

Fans of musical theatre.

Fans of daytime soap operas.

Bitter librarians (retirement does not relieve the bitterness.)

Trolls

British Royal Family fans dreaming of a life of tea cosies and scones.

Breathless fans of people I've never heard of anywhere but here.

They are semi-recluses who have an encyclopedic knowledge of every tv show and tv movie from the 70s and 80s.

by Anonymousreply 37July 26, 2024 1:45 PM

As a retired human who does, in fact, spend too much time looking at screens... I note the "watches TV all day" is dated. I'd deny I watch more than a few hours of TV... but then I reflect that YouTube, podcasts, other social media... yeah, the interaction with "screens" (not cable TV) has replaced actually having a life. I do refuse to have a recliner though. I sit in half-lotus and watch/listen to podcasts. The new old man.

I do wish DL had more lesbians. Like "elder lez", I often disagree with her but she always says something smart. The usual DL post is not, um, smart... I like smart lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 38July 26, 2024 2:39 PM

I picture a fatter Jack McBrayer.

by Anonymousreply 39July 26, 2024 3:58 PM

It really is amazing how many elder DLers live in the past and have little understanding of the modern world or society.

by Anonymousreply 40July 26, 2024 4:29 PM

I know I'm in the minority by I picture DLers to be of various ages and mostly well-groomed and attractive. Reason being, I spend a lot of time here so I prefer to think I keep company with an aesthetically pleasing crowd.

by Anonymousreply 41July 26, 2024 4:47 PM

R41 Too many DLers tuck their shirts in. "Aesthetics" are relative.

by Anonymousreply 42July 26, 2024 4:59 PM

Petty, bitchy in a mostly unfunny way, arrogant and dull. Thinks he's an intellectual just because he claims to be a liberal and hates Trump, but then will turn around and ferociously bark out radical right wing talking points when it comes to the homeless, the poor, the disabled and women.

If he disagrees with someone's arguments but cannot successfully counter them (which happens most of the time), he will accuse the other person of being a Russian, Chinese, Iranian or North Korean bot. If this doesn't work, he will call the other person ugly, old, fat, effeminate, poor, a tranny or a basement dweller (obviously, most DLers who do this don't have mirrors at home). If this still doesn't work, he will downvote the other person time and time again, in a desperate attempt to convince himself that he's a genius by silencing everybody else.

Still, this place is saved by the men who are wickedly funny, willing to engage in conversations with anyone so they can understand how others see things and willing to share juicy gossip. Oh, and let's not mention the Tasteful Friends threads, which tend to be simply awesome.

by Anonymousreply 43July 26, 2024 5:00 PM

Serious question: when people see so many replies on DL that contain “I’m a straight woman…”, does your mind blot that out since it doesn’t conform with what you want to believe are the demographics on the site? I just want to understand how your mind reconciles the explicit admission of the women on DL with your replies on this thread that the users are men.

[quote]Serious question: when people see so many replies on DL that contain “I’m a straight woman…”, does your mind blot that out since it doesn’t conform with what you want to believe are the demographics on the site?

To be honest, R46, when I realize that the poster is a straight woman, either explicitly or (much more common) implicitly, I stop reading and skip to the next thread or reply. Gays, lesbians, bisexuals might all have something to contribute (or not), but I don't come here to seek the insights of sad straight women who want a safe space. I prefer an unsafe space among homosexuals and some part-timers. I've little interest in what some sadsack (who usually hides her straight perspective) thinks about anything at Datalounge.

I have plenty of straight female friends, none of them are sad chicks who harbor some illusion that gay men are some kind of safe space or playground for them.

by Anonymousreply 65September 6, 2024 4:04 PM

Average D/Ler:

Is fat;

Has a tediously exhaustive knowledge of 1950-1999 female-led sitcom;

Collects early 20th century Milanese flatware (and porn);

Lives for those moment when he gets to tut at someone for using apostrophe’s wrongly.

by Anonymousreply 66September 6, 2024 4:05 PM

R54's claim cannot be substantiated because (1) her personal, anecdotal sample of four fellow alcoholic depressives does not comprise a basis for her conclusion, and (2) anyone who types "IRL" is untrustworthy and a menace to the men, children and animals around her.

by Anonymousreply 67September 6, 2024 4:07 PM
