Republican leaders urge colleagues to steer clear of racist and sexist attacks on Harris

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican leaders are warning party members against using overtly racist and sexist attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris, as they and former President Donald Trump 's campaign scramble to adjust to the reality of a new Democratic rival less than four months before Election Day.

At a closed-door meeting of House Republicans on Tuesday, National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Richard Hudson, R-N.C., urged lawmakers to stick to criticizing Harris for her role in Biden-Harris administration policies.

“This election will be about policies and not personalities,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after the meeting.

“This is not personal with regard to Kamala Harris,” he added, "and her ethnicity or her gender have nothing to do with this whatsoever.”

The warnings point to the new risks for Republicans in running against a Democrat who would become the first woman, first Black woman and first person of South Asian decent to win the White House. Trump, in particular, has a history of racist and misogynistic attacks that could turn off key groups of swing voters, including suburban women, as well as voters of color and younger people Trump's campaign has been courting.

The admonitions came after some members and Trump allies began to cast Harris, a former district attorney, attorney general and senator, as a “DEI” hire — a reference to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“Intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel,” Wyoming Rep. Harriet Hageman said in a TV interview. “I think she was a DEI hire. And I think that that’s what we’re seeing and I just don’t think that they have anybody else.”

Since Biden announced he was exiting the campaign, Republicans have rolled out a long list of attack lines against Harris, including trying to tie her to the most unpopular Biden policies and his handling of the economy and the Southern border. Trump campaign officials and other Republicans have accused Harris of being complicit in a cover-up of Biden's health issues, and they have been mining her record as a prosecutor in California as they try to paint her as soft on crime.

Johnson said both Trump and Harris have records in White House policy and said voters can compare how families were doing under the Trump administration with how they’re doing now under Biden.

“She is the co-owner, co-author, co-conspirator in all the policies that got us into the mess,” Johnson said.

May as well try to tell fetid garbage not to stink so much. This your base assholes. You cultivated this pile of shit. You can't force it to be anything but the shit it is. It's its natural state of being

by Anonymousreply 1July 24, 2024 3:02 AM

It speaks volumes that he felt the need to make the request.

by Anonymousreply 2July 24, 2024 3:02 AM

They unleashed hell on America and now they want everyone to (somewhat) behave?

Way too fucking late.

by Anonymousreply 3July 24, 2024 3:03 AM

On day one. He had to say it.

by Anonymousreply 4July 24, 2024 3:05 AM

Good luck Dr Frankenstein!

by Anonymousreply 5July 24, 2024 3:06 AM

It's hilarious how they toss out "DEI hire" now on anyone who isn't a straight, white male. Talk about intellectually bottom of the barrel

by Anonymousreply 6July 24, 2024 3:07 AM

[quote] “Intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel,” Wyoming Rep. Harriet Hageman said in a TV interview. “I think she was a DEI hire. And I think that that’s what we’re seeing and I just don’t think that they have anybody else.”

This is just so fucking stupid.

Don't they have anything better?

At some point, I hope Americans see that Republicans have nothing more to offer than racist and misogynistic insults against their opponents.

by Anonymousreply 7July 24, 2024 3:08 AM

These are the trad-cons, Hudson and Johnson, guys who still think they can moderate the MAGA types and hold on to suburban swing districts by not being blatantly sexist, racist, and nationalist. They know you’ve got to win 218 seats to hold the House, where all legislation must technically originate.

The problem is the half of the party that are in such safely gerrymandered seats that they know they’ve already won so they can try to climb over one another to curry favor with the Capo in hopes of a cabinet position or a plum appointment to a court or ambassadorship.

by Anonymousreply 8July 24, 2024 3:13 AM

If they weren't a bunch of racist sexists they wouldn't need the warning.

by Anonymousreply 9July 24, 2024 3:16 AM

DEI hire is especially ridiculous when Donald Trump, the leader of the party, is a nepo-baby

by Anonymousreply 10July 24, 2024 3:38 AM

Policies and not personalities, eh? So Donald Trump suddenly developed some policies? Some non-racist, non-sexist policies?

Sure, I’ll believe that! And if you have any bridges to sell I’ll take a couple of them, too.

by Anonymousreply 11July 24, 2024 3:43 AM

Keyword: "overtly"

by Anonymousreply 12July 24, 2024 5:16 AM

I bet they will be on good behavior. They’re vulgarians but not stupid.

by Anonymousreply 13July 24, 2024 5:36 AM

Yeah, right.

by Anonymousreply 14July 24, 2024 5:49 AM

Good luck with that. 🤣🤣🤣

by Anonymousreply 15July 24, 2024 5:49 AM

Like anyone can tell Trump to keep his big yap shut.

by Anonymousreply 16July 24, 2024 5:50 AM

[quote] “Intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel,” Wyoming Rep. Harriet Hageman said in a TV interview.

Well, I guess we can't all be as intellectual as the current crop of MAGA Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 17July 24, 2024 5:53 AM

Mike Johnson is so creepy. I wonder if he and his son are still monitoring each other's porn usage?

by Anonymousreply 18July 24, 2024 7:32 AM

[quote] “This is not personal with regard to Kamala Harris,” he added, "and her ethnicity or her gender have nothing to do with this whatsoever.”

And then he winked 😜so hard, his scalp split open.

by Anonymousreply 19July 24, 2024 8:19 AM

Wonder who will be the 1st to break this 'rule'? Can the Dems then attack Mrs Usha Vance full throttle?

by Anonymousreply 20July 24, 2024 8:26 AM

“Republican” leaders? Who are they? Were they at the MAGA convention?

Do they mean Hulk Hogan? Or Kid Rock?

by Anonymousreply 21July 24, 2024 8:26 AM

The big problem for the MAGA party is that Kamala is already turning out new voters. Something like 60% or more of her recent small dollar donors had donated for the 1st in this election cycle. That’s going to kill the MAGA party up and down the ballot.

Elon Musk can donate $45M a month but he still only has 1 vote. The same vote that a small dollar donor has.

When the Trump campaign bragged that they raised $51M post-conviction that was from like 2 donors. Even their small dollar donors are completely tapped out. Some may even be done with him, given the drop in ratings for the RNC.

by Anonymousreply 22July 24, 2024 8:33 AM

Oh yeah, like they’re gonna listen 🙄🙄🙄

by Anonymousreply 23July 24, 2024 9:18 AM

What gets me is all of this "What has she done" bullshit. It's like...check her Wikipedia, motherfuckers.

by Anonymousreply 24July 24, 2024 10:50 AM

" Republican leaders"................... best example of an oxymoron.

by Anonymousreply 25July 24, 2024 1:06 PM

"She didn't fix the border that we voted against fixing!!!"

Ain’t no stopping Trump

(Is he going to ask for her college transcripts?)

by Anonymousreply 32July 24, 2024 1:57 PM

If you go over to conservative reddits, you'll find a shitload of threads about their Trump donations being taken monthly when they thought they'd just donated one time. Only to realize a $50 donation has somehow become a $1000. He's a shady piece of shit

by Anonymousreply 33July 24, 2024 2:35 PM

Might as well ask them to stop breathing.

The GOP is panicking because its carefully crafted "Biden is old" talking point is now worthless, and the arguments made in support of that now apply to their candidate.

It's a true "Leopards ate my face!" moment.

by Anonymousreply 36July 24, 2024 4:28 PM

[quote] The GOP is panicking because its carefully crafted "Biden is old" talking point is now worthless

Their desperate new spin on this talking point is: "Kamala Harris knew that Biden was old! Why didn't she do something about it?"

by Anonymousreply 37July 24, 2024 4:54 PM

"Why didn't she have her blood pumped into him, you know, like those twinks and Peter Thiel!"

Hahahahahaha, I love it!

There's a MAGAT sucker born every minute.

I hope Trump bleeds them dry, so they can't donate another cent after that!

by Anonymousreply 41July 24, 2024 5:32 PM

R36 there was some bitch on fox yesterday crying about how unfair it is that democrats get to be "cute" and spin this age thing around and how it can't be allowed because it's just soooooo unfair. they can't even think of a plausible complaint really they're just so transparently mad.

by Anonymousreply 42July 24, 2024 5:35 PM

When used to refer to Kamala, DEI is absolutely a racist dog whistle. Like "thug," it's a more palatable surrogate for the N-word.

by Anonymousreply 43July 24, 2024 11:13 PM

A few of Hageman’s bona fides vs Kamala’s:

After graduating from Fort Laramie High School, Hageman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Wyoming and a Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming College of Law.

In 1997, Hageman represented Wyoming in Nebraska v. Wyoming, a dispute over management of the North Platte River. In the case, she advocated against the United States Forest Service's roadless rule and lost.

Hageman was a candidate in the 2018 Wyoming gubernatorial election, placing third after investment manager Foster Friess and the eventual winner, state Treasurer Mark Gordon.

Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

She began her law career in the office of the district attorney (DA) of Alameda County, before being recruited to the San Francisco DA's Office and later the city attorney of San Francisco's office.

In 2003, she was elected DA of San Francisco.

She was elected attorney general of California in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.

Harris served as the junior U.S. senator from California from 2017 to 2021; she defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African-American woman and the first Indian American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

by Anonymousreply 44July 24, 2024 11:40 PM

THEY HAVE NOTHING

by Anonymousreply 45July 24, 2024 11:42 PM

I haven't seen people this excited since Obama. The difference is Republicans lowered the bar on acceptable behavior so I've heard groups of 60 something women hooting about Trump being a pervert who rapes his own daughter or laughing about Trump's tiny dick.

by Anonymousreply 46July 24, 2024 11:47 PM

Johnson looks delusional.

by Anonymousreply 47July 25, 2024 12:42 AM

When they go low, they'll go even lower.

by Anonymousreply 48July 25, 2024 12:58 AM

Harriet Hageman wins the Bob Barr award for multiracial denialism.

by Anonymousreply 49July 25, 2024 2:25 AM

R43, I complete agree.

The ironic thing is, while I’m sure JD did well at Ohio State, those same three letters are almost certain to have played a big role in his admission and nearly full-ride scholarship to Yale Law.

White man he may be, but Yale Law has plenty of the same begging to get in with just as impressive transcripts who can afford to pay their own way.

No, Yale Law picked him because he was a southern son of hillbilly junkies who managed not to get a felony, knock some girl up, or overdose and if that ain’t DEI then I don’t know what is.

by Anonymousreply 50July 25, 2024 2:43 AM

They won't be able to do it.

Not even for one day.

Republicans have no self control, when it comes to hateful attacks.

by Anonymousreply 51July 25, 2024 3:07 AM

Was Usha Vance a DEI hire??

by Anonymousreply 52July 25, 2024 3:18 AM

Yes.

She charges $4.40 an hour to BEARD for JD.

by Anonymousreply 53July 25, 2024 3:19 AM

It's a hardship position, R53, and she's right to charge that much. Just think of all the furniture cleaning in the house.

by Anonymousreply 58July 25, 2024 3:35 AM

Scott Jennings, a Republican CNN air contributor--and someone I'm strangely attracted to--was hot as fish grease last night about Kamala running instead of Biden. He said that Biden OWES the country an explanation for why he allowed big-money Democrat donors and people like AOC to convince him to quit. This was before Biden's speech last night. He's always been oddly dismissive of her--probably the DEI shit. Now I'm reading Beyonce and Swift are hosting a benefit for Harris.

I TRULY believe they are scared shitless.

by Anonymousreply 59July 25, 2024 10:49 AM

OF COURSE they are scared shitless, r59.

Harris excites youth, women, and Blacks. I'm sensing 2008-levels of excitement. If I were a GOPer, I'd be scared, too.

by Anonymousreply 60July 25, 2024 10:52 AM

For trump’s followers racism is all that they have

by Anonymousreply 61July 25, 2024 12:13 PM

No Democrats is demanding an explanation. Republicans lost the little league game and are whining "no fair."

by Anonymousreply 62July 25, 2024 12:47 PM

The sad part is that grown adult people have to be told not to use racist and sexist attacks. Yet we keep hearing that no one is racist or sexist in this country.
