47 years ago this month. Were any of our eldergays there for it? Great PBS documentary at the link.

I was watching "Lovers and Other Strangers" when my downstairs neighbor called to ask if my lights were flickering. Just then, all the power went out and we both screamed. We joined up downstairs and ended up at the local bar. It was fun. Some of the guys in the bar would run out when anyone heard that they were looting anywhere along the block.

I was asleep. I was in nursing school, constantly in the library, studying, writing papers, etc. I was wiped out, fell asleep. My mother me about it the next day.

I was a teen in Greenwich Village and I remember walking around to see what's what. I actually remember the below scene at Mother Bucka's Ice Cream on West 8th Street SE corner of MacDougal Street, but I didn't go in.

We were at my grandparents house in North New Jersey. A family party. I was 7 so I was watching television. Suddenly, and this was before cable, channel 5 went all snow. I tried to change the channel, but it was all snow save for channel 9, whose transmitter was in Secaucus, NJ. First the adults talked of a possible Russian invasion. Then, after listening to the radio for a bit, they understood.

All the NYC television stations were snow until about 1pm the next day. It was HELL!

by Anonymousreply 22July 24, 2024 3:00 AM

If you were in New Jersey I would have been more concerned about a Martian invasion.

R22. Did you guys know past the time by doing some snow. This was 1970s NYC after all. Ive heard it ALL.

by Anonymousreply 24July 24, 2024 5:25 PM

R21 That is an amazing documentary of NYC in the late 1970s. I saw it when it first came out, and it encapsulates the mood of the city in a very comprehensive and accurate manner.
