I don't like the woman at all and I haven't smoked in 20 years and have no urge to do, but if a 78 year old wants to have a cigarette after a dinner, what the fuck do I care?
It's not as though she light up at my dinner table without asking and left a pyramid if cigarette butts on Mother's favorite china.
It's not as though I can smell her cigarette through the magic of video.
She's already two or three years past female life expectancy in the U.S., I reckon she's well aware of the risks and unpopularity.
She can always quite if inclined, though I'm not sure the same can be said for being a prickly bitch.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 23, 2024 6:53 PM |
Her upper body is a bit stiff and she's got a bit of a hunch back.
Look at her shoes, though. Not super high heels, but not flats or kitten heels. I'd say at least 3-inch stiletto-style heels. If she were in bad shape, she wouldn't be wearing those.
She was pretty considerate in the way that she held her cigarette, but she did take the cig into the car.
Anyway, when I am her age, I'd be happy to be out to dinner with friends.
Here's the menu at Giorgio Baldi. Seems like the same menu over and over.

Just wanna say I quit smoking 8 days ago. I started up again during Covid after 21 years smoke-free, and felt like I was never going to be able to quit gain, because quitting the first time was so, so, so hard. I'm 51 and I knew I had to quit now or accept a potentially shortened and compromised life span marred potentially by health issues. But after many failed attempts, I think I have cracked the code. Instead of viewing myself as a smoker trying to quit, I reframed it as I'm just a nonsmoker, who doesn't smoke. That was the reframe I needed, and I have not felt tormented about quitting. It's been much easier. I just keep thinking "Well, I see there is a craving right now in my body, but I'm a nonsmoker, so...not sure what I can possibly do about that." I suggest anyone trying to quit stop labeling themselves as a smoker who wants to quit, and start referring to yourself as a nonsmoker. It is a powerful reframe, and it works.
Having said all of that, I don't care if Bette smokes. I'm surprised, and I also think it's sort of adorable. Her life, her choices. She's got plenty of money for health care and I assume she's not a chain smoker. She's a real character!

We're otherwise healthy but old. We drink too much. We smoke cigs. We smoke weed. We spend too much money on eating out. Neither of us is overweight. We share clothes.
We have 2 cars. Officially, smoking is only allowed in his old Acura. But we both cheat when either or both of us use my old Camry.

Seeing someone smoking tobacco today in public is very rare indeed. It’s got to be that smelling tobacco smoke when you are out walking is like smelling MJ smoke when you were out walking 50 years ago. That just never happened.
The tobacco smokers may be very few in number today but they are still a very hated minority by the vast majority who shun them and use laws against them..
Now smokers are a sighting as in ——“look look mom there is a tobacco smoker”

As for "since she's old, it's okay"...I don't care if anyone smokes. That's not my business. I don't care about the long term effects on the health care system. What I do care about is that we have a lousy health care system that is bankrupting people, and that people don't use, because they can't afford to, and how Medicare for everyone is overdue by 50 years. THAT I care about.

So its not like heavy smokers are always dying by 45.. many live longer and many of those that do often have a shitload of expensive health issues.
Living with oxygen 24/7 for their lung conditions must not be a happy way to spend their days.
But even then many of those addicted will still be hitting that pipe so to speak.

Alcohol and marijuana, like cigarette smoking, pose significant dangers and expenses to society. Alcohol consumption leads to addiction, impaired driving, and increased healthcare costs due to liver disease, heart problems, and accidents. Marijuana use, though often perceived as safer, can impair cognitive function, contribute to mental health issues, and lead to dependency, increasing healthcare and social service burdens. Both substances also result in lost productivity, legal costs, and enforcement expenses. The societal impact of alcohol and marijuana, in terms of health risks, economic costs, and social consequences, parallels the well-documented harms of cigarette smoking.

Most smokers are inconsiderate and will flick their ashes, or put them out wherever convenient for them. Many years ago I was in a lunch room and someone was smoking and they were flicking their ashes in my can of soda, which I didn't notice. I went to take a sip and nearly vomited. I threw the can across the room and walked out. If I had stayed, there would have been a punch thrown.

A big cause of house fires.
And lung cancer is just one of the many cancers smokers are prone to get. Also a big problem for pregnant woman and their unborn and of course young kids who are around smokers.
Smoking is the leading cause of premature death and disability in the country.

I do appreciate Bette Midler’s friendship with Barry Manilow. He was her accompaniment, early in Bette’s career. This association no doubt helped him to get heard by record executives which after signing and success established him. Barry introduced Bette to Melissa Manchester who was among the first of Bette Midler’s famous Harlette’s. Within a span of months or a few years, Melissa Manchester was also signed to a record label and began a successful career in music.

I miss that car it was so damn comfortable especially on a long trip.

Liza has had substance abuse issues since before she was born. Nobody is surprised that she’s smoking in a limo. It’s surprising that she’s still alive.

Judy Garland's uterus was a fetid swamp of Seconal, Phenobarbital, Nembutal, Dexedrine, Blue Nun wine and Salems. It's a miracle anyone survived it. God bless Liza, Lorna and Joey. They really were miracle babies.

Smokers make 17.5% less a year than non smokers. Smokers are less likely to be hired than non smokers. Smoking is much much higher among the poor. Well known facts.
Addictions are rarely helpful to a quality life. Smokers get lots of support on DL. DL has many suicide threads from those members who want to kill themselves often because they are poor.
It’s nature at work or as some might say As the World Turns or It is what it is

Deep thoughts R145. I like to smoke a cig after a good meal. Standing in the street so as not offend those on the sidewalk with my sad and triggering habit, these two fully-clenched gay finger-pointers strolled by holding hands. As they went by, they didn't make eye contact, just gave me a side-eye smirk and frantically fanned the air as they passed. Yaas girls, judgment noted.

Smokers always think if they turn their head and blow their smoke, or stand next to an open window and blow their smoke, that it's somehow fine and tolerable...no, it fucking stinks. People still have to deal with your funk, do that shit at home.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | July 27, 2024 2:42 PM |
Why would you ever be “impressed” by someone who smokes?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | July 27, 2024 3:14 PM |
All four of my grandparents smoked. I watched 2 grandparents die from lung cancer. It’s a horrible way to go. Third grandparent got COPD and spent his last years gasping for air. Also awful to watch. Fourth grandparent had a stroke at 62. All 4 were dead before 75. Their parents were dirt poor but lived into their 80/90s. My great grandfather barely survived the famine in Ireland but lived to 97! So, I got the message. We don’t have the genes for smoking! I never smoked or vaped and seeing a young person smoke in real life tends to bring up awful images of the suffering of my grandparents.
However, the sight of Liza puffing away in her limo or Bette sneaking a smoke after dinner doesn’t bother me. I kind of think “good for them and I wish I had those genes!”
by Anonymous | reply 151 | July 27, 2024 7:27 PM |
My grandfather and great grandmother both smoked like chimneys, unfiltered cigarettes. He lived to be 84 and she lived to be 91.
It's really all about genetics.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | July 27, 2024 7:46 PM |
I used to smoke. I loved it. If it was free and healthy I wouldn't have quit. I'm not sorry I did though not by a longshot. Drinking is also pretty unhealthy and no one looks down upon it
by Anonymous | reply 153 | July 27, 2024 7:57 PM |
R153 True. I think it’s because alcohol is far less likely to kill you. You have to be a raging alcohol for a long time to die directly from alcohol. I have many alcoholics in my family. None have a drinking related illness (yet) but one uncle has PAD from smoking to the point that he cannot walk to his mailbox (he’s 64) and my other uncle is already dead (at 58) from lung cancer. Both men drank an ocean of booze over decades.

by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 27, 2024 8:10 PM |
R154 It kills indirectly too if you think about so many crashes and accidents caused by alcohol. Also lots of fights, violence and domestic violence. And stupid decision making. It's not great.

I've known more nonsmokers who died from esophageal cancer related to alcohol intake.
[quote]The risk of developing esophageal cancer is 1.3 times higher for people who consume one or two drinks per day and 5 times higher for those who consume four or more drinks daily. The risk of esophageal cancer is also higher among individuals who consume alcohol and have an atypical form of ALDH2.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | July 27, 2024 8:53 PM |
Smoking is also a big risk factor for esophageal cancer.

by Anonymous | reply 159 | July 27, 2024 8:58 PM |
Smoking is a GIANT pleasure but only up to 30. Possibly 40. It's a young person's unhealthy habit.
Most of the culture that supported smoking pleasurably and glamorously is gone now, even in Paris! Oh well.

Bette can do as she pleases with her body, However, I do find it somewhat ironic she founded a non-profit which cleans up parks, plants trees and gardens yet this old broad has no issues inhaling carcinogens then blowing them out into the atmosphere as a form of pollution. Hypocrite or just a self-involved asshole?

by Anonymous | reply 170 | July 29, 2024 5:56 PM |
R167, I hate to break it to you, but there are a hell of a lot more smokers than there are private jet owners. Every time she exhales she's creating pollution which affects her precious "green" agenda.
R170, multiply that by 30 million US smokers and their "couple cigarettes."
She creates green spaces which thrive on oxygen in order to survive, while depriving her lungs of the same. Makes sense.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | July 29, 2024 6:20 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 173 | July 29, 2024 6:22 PM |
Unless climate change is impacted by fires, home fires, forest fires, etc I doubt smoking plays much of a role in climate change.
Smoking is a significant cause of fires inc fatal fires. Not the major cause a significant cause.

I have often heard that unattractive people age better because they already have hard, uneven features that do not change dramatically with age, as can be the case with those who are attractive. Sadly for Bette, this is not the case for her: she's always been ugly but God, she now looks like she should be playing every Disney witch in history.

[quote] I let friends of mine smoke in my car. As long as they hang the cig out of the window it's not bad.
Those things always end up blowing in the back of the car smoldering causing fires. The person flicks it and the wind makes it swing back in or ash lands in the back seats. Happens all the time. Dumb idea.
