by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 21, 2024 11:23 PM |
In America R1 the Vice President is there to replace the President should the President have to step aside. The voters voted for Harris to be the Vice President. So this the opposite of an assault on democracy. I know this all must be mind boggling for you.

I don't get the anger, R8. It's not like Manchin's talking about running as an independent. He's running as a Dem in the open convention. And he's not going to win.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 21, 2024 11:39 PM |
I firmly believe that another term would have killed Biden. I hope this extends his life. Leaving aside politics, he is a good man who has been dealt too many bad hands. To lose your wife and daughter in a car accident and then have your son die of a brain tumor is brutal. It would be nice if he could now have several good years in Delaware with his grandkids and his dogs. Far away, in every sense, from that orange scourge.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 21, 2024 11:49 PM |
The entire election takes place in 7 or 8 key states. It’s not about pushing Dem turnout in blue states. It’s about independent voters in a few states.
Biden should NOT resign. That’s ridiculous.

All of these “a woman/gay man/brown person can never win…….because those middle Americans won’t vote for them” are full of shit. There is no "border crisis" (although I give it 2 months until we hear about the "caravans" again). What there is, is two-fold:
Border Patrol stopping record numbers of attempts; and
Republican smugness in their lies, as they know we can't verify OR disprove their claims.
R47, Cleveland served two terms. If Trump is elected and lives until 2029 January, HE will have served two terms. So your "3 consecutive one-termers" would be, I believe, inaccurate, if we mean the men and not the separated terms of office.

I don't think Trump CAN bow out, he needs to be President so he can weasel out of all his crimes (not that he's exactly had the worst run of doing just that anyway) but I was trying to mentally game out what would happen if he did drop out. It's not the same with him since he's just been officially nominated, while Biden hadn't yet. Would Vance become the candidate? The GOP has become such a cult around that one bloated disaster conman I don't see how they pick up the pieces without him - without a complete meltdown.

Republican voters are very comfortable with hypocrisy and they believe words, not actions. In its current state, the party is a grifters paradise. It's because of who Trump is. Everyone acknowledges his astonishing luck - but due to his disgusting character the sane population has no inclination to wallow in sympathy.
Trump will naturally still attempt to wring pathos and admiration by saying he 'took a bullet for democracy.' But in fact he suffered a flesh-wound. It was a blameless fireman who took a bullet.
Big events will continue to make Trump's flesh-wound recede into irrelevance, try otherwise as he will. As we've already seen, this'll make his bitter tweets all the more berserk - yet more useful material to show the weirdly undecided what horror needs to be crushed in November.

I think the ugliness will work in the Democrats favor because it will get terribly ugly.
This is going to be close in all likelihood, nail biter close, but I think it would have been, in the end, even with Biden as nominee. It will come down to slivers of voters in suburbs and amongst women. Those people are likely to take a broader view of the election than your run of the mill rural voter outside these groups. So the more ugly they see, if Harris presents as calm, capable and with a clear, mostly moderate view of moving ahead, they will move toward her and she will carry the day.
But the polls will probably freak us out through November and it will be terrifyingly close, but I think she will prevail and I think the Republicans and Trump will help her as much as anything else. She's basically Biden without the age worries. Biden's biggest strength was he's not Trump. Neither is she.

This is a perspective from Canada... it makes some positive observations about Harris' candidacy:
"To understand why better-informed Democrats have come to that conclusion, it may be worth looking at polls – but not the ones we usually see. In those, Mr. Biden has consistently averaged several points behind Mr. Trump since his shambolic June 27 debate performance gave voters a sense that he was suffering a serious impairment.
Ms. Harris has generally fared a bit better. When voters are asked about a hypothetical Trump-Harris election, she has sometimes come out ahead by a couple points, sometimes behind. But those polls aren’t that useful, because most Americans know little about their Vice-President.
More important are surveys that pit Mr. Trump against what pollsters call “generic Democrat” – that is, any opponent who isn’t Mr. Biden. The last time this was asked directly in a large-scale poll, in November by NBC News, Mr. Biden lost by two points to Mr. Trump while the generic figure won by an impressive six points. Another poll this month showed “generic Democrat” figures, albeit at the congressional level, leading Republicans by three points. Such polls have generally shown Democrats ahead of Republicans all year. Indeed, CNN found earlier this month that three times as many U.S. voters believed “someone else” would have a better chance of winning an election than Mr. Biden.
In other words, if you erase voter concern about Mr. Biden’s appearance of advancing age and incomprehensibility, and replace him with any Democrat who doesn’t have those liabilities, you probably have a winning candidate."

Kamala and Hillary are two different beasts. Fair or unfair, Hillary came with a decade of baggage and a unique level of partisan revulsion. Hold your caftans, again, I'm not saying it was fair and yes, yes, she won the popular vote but how'd that work out for her (and us?) HRC was a far more complicated prospect than Harris, and she ran a campaign that could have been better.
If Kamala is as open to advice as the party is to her candidacy, she can do it. 100%. And what a miracle that would be: America electing it's first woman and of color. Fucking mind blowing.

I disagree she needs to go too hard on Trump. Trump is baked in. She can paint the contrasts, for sure, but she's a fresh start, she needs to look forward. Overdumping on Trump is stuck in the past, which was Biden's second biggest problem after the perception of his age and mental capacity. It's a fine line and I'm not looking to deprive anybody of their Trump bating or bashing entirely, but she cannot run too heavily on bashing Trump. To look forward will be to draw the greatest contrast. The candidates who land big wins are the optimists: Obama, Clinton, Reagan, Kennedy...

R283, the problem for Democrats is that literally all of Trump’s past and present is already baked into the numbers. It has no additional impact beyond the impact it already had. Now, you may counter as Michael Corleone did, with "Who's naive, Kay" in regards to the world of politics, and you may be accurate in finding it just like the corrupt world of business, in which case Trump's life was indeed preparation for the White House.

Kamala Harris has pulled in $81 million in donations after Biden exited the race on Sunday, setting a new national record, her campaign announced Monday.
The donations add up to the highest amount raised by one candidate within a 24-hour period and include funds from more than 888,000 grassroots donors, 60% of whom were identified as first-time donors in the 2024 cycle, according to a statement released by her campaign.
For comparison, Trump’s campaign said it pulled in nearly $53 million in the 24 hours after his New York felony conviction in May. That sum was boasted at the time as breaking online records for Republicans.

This is the important part. The majority of the country was begging for a new nominee not named Trump or Biden.

Risky move!!!!
Joe Biden was the most voted person in the history of the US, and like it or not he had the advantage of being a straight white male.
The average democrat couldn't care less about Kamala being a brown woman, they're all excited to vote for her or for whoever is not Dump.
But not everybody who voted for Biden in 2020 was an average democrat, if the independents who skipped the 2016 election also decide to skip this one, Dump becomes the president once again.
On the bright side Trump is now a convicted felon, which he wasn't before 2024, and everybody who hated him in 2016 and 2020 now hate him even more, So I am really hoping that Kamala will be the first female president of the USA from 2025 through 2033. It's about time.

From the Quinnipiac poll, this is very unexpected. I would think, even with sympathy for the shooting: "Donald Trump: 46 percent favorable, 49 percent unfavorable, 2 percent haven't heard enough about him - the highest favorability rating for Trump since the Quinnipiac University Poll first asked this question of registered voters in May 2015."
"Kamala Harris: 37 percent favorable, 51 percent unfavorable, 11 percent haven't heard enough about her."
Although Harris is a lot less popular, she still has 11 percent undecided about her and that leaves room for her to grow her favorability rating. Trump's favorability may wane as more time passes after the assassination attempt.

Kamala so suavely saying she knows how to handle men like Trump brilliantly put him back in his sordid little box. The absolute lack of respect for his flesh-wound will incense him.
All Trump can do now is dredge for more ugliness. He has no charm energy or intelligence to contribute. The implosion will be spectacular and glorious.

by Anonymous | reply 374 | July 23, 2024 7:48 AM |
I said this in another thread, but Trump really is between a rock and a hard place.
All the usual insults that he and the right-wing media at large will try to fling at Kamala -- a la "dumb as a rock" -- are going to alienate the very same undecided voters that he desperately needs to win the election (women and people of color). At this point, I think anyone who is not a dyed-in-the-wool MAGA is tired of Trump: his insults, his capriciousness, his rancidness. Look at the way he's acted since the assassination attempt. He's a festering sore on the American body politic.
Unfortunately, Trump really doesn't have anything else to grab from his bag of tricks. He has no unifying ideas anymore. No "Build the wall" or "Lock her up." All that's left is bombast and insults. And as we've seen since 2015, there is no pivot. I was listening to right-wing media in the car yesterday (as is not my wont, but I wanted to get a sense of how they're framing Kamala). They, too, can only really insult Kamala based on identity. "She's the diversity hire you love to hate!" And "Dems can't win without cheating!" That's not nearly enough to sway anyone who wasn't already going to vote for Trump.

"Lyin’ Kamala Harris, the Biden appointed “Border Czar” who never visited the Border, and whose incompetence gave us the WORST and MOST DANGEROUS Border anywhere in the World, has absolutely terrible pole numbers against a fine and brilliant young man named DONALD J. TRUMP!"
"NBC News Poll: Lyin’ Kamala Harris is the most unpopular Vice President in history. WOW, that is not a great sound bite!"

“Kamala Harris’ office has had a staggering 91.5 percent turnover rate since she became vice president, an investigation from government watchdog organization Open The Books (OTB) revealed on Monday. Of the 47 staff members hired when Harris took office in 2021, only four reportedly remained in her employment as of March 2024.
The report comes as Biden’s X account announced he will “stand down” from his reelection campaign and “fully support” Harris as the new nominee. OTB utilized U.S. Senate disclosures to obtain records from the vice president’s office, including 2021 and 2024 payrolls.”

A note for those freaking out over polling:
I am not saying the polls are wrong, and I'm not saying we can be complacent. However, as a reminder, in 2022, the Detroit Free Press had polling that showed Gretchen Whitmer was an extremely comfortable nine points ahead, and was cruising to reelection. But her Republican opponent published its own polls showing a much tighter race, and that sold more papers, so they released a series of articles about how she was struggling and might be in trouble. Fast forward to election day, she absolutely wiped the floor with him and won by an even larger margin than the non-biased polls suggested.
All this is to say that the media has an agenda, and it's not truth. If you really want a sense of what's going on, ignore the noise, ignore the concern trolling, and focus on how the campaigns are actually acting. I think it's very clear from how much the GOP is freaking out and don't know how to respond that they realize Harris has a real shot here. Don't get complacent: give money if you can, talk to people, and for God's sake, vote like your life depends on it. But the only sure way to lose is to give up.
Also, Nate Silver is Peter Thiel's butt boy now, so don't pay attention to a single thing he says.

Asked Monday morning if she was prepared to take the vice presidency if it was offered, Whitmer replied, “No, I’m not planning on going anywhere.”
“I am not leaving Michigan,” Whitmer told WLNS political reporter Tim Skubick caught up with her as she left an event at the state capitol. “I’m proud to be the governor of Michigan. I’ve been consistent. I know everyone is always suspicious and asking this question over and over again. I know you’re doing your job. I’m not going anywhere.”

I disagree. I think there are plenty of people who are winnable, but don't want to feel that they are totally excluded from the whole thing. Yes, it's fragile male ego or whatever the fuck, but it's there, and we shouldn't make our need to change everything immediately the goal. We are asking for some radical stuff already, including somebody who technically didn't really win a primary despite our legalistic arguments that she sort of did.
We can do what we can to allay any additional fears and worries, and still make a huge advance in progress for this country. "Go for it, all of it!" I don't think is a winning strategy right now.

And the bigger problem is that the issues with Israel are way more nuanced than either extreme wants to admit, and I will not be turning this into a thread about it. Since he did graciously step aside, I just feel gratitude and euphoria and a feeling that yes, we have real hope, and we can do this, and in fact we WILL do this.
I'm not usually New Agey, but I kept feeling this idea that "sometimes what you fear the most is what you need the most to set you free." And that's kind of where I am now. I feel so much more free than I did before Biden's announcement. And I don't seem to be alone in that.

We are in a fortunate position where there are no bad choices for veep. I like every single one of them, and every single one of them adds something to the ticket.
This is a good place to be.

Much like with Kamala declaring almost immediately, I feel like the same should be done with her VP pick. The longer the wait, the more opportunity for division. Should be done as soon as possible after Biden's speech today, internal polling be damned.
by Anonymous | reply 483 | July 24, 2024 1:52 PM |
No. Let them do thorough vetting. On the surface, we have nothing but good picks, but if there's a Ralph Northam-in-blackface image of one of them floating aroung out there, we need to know ahead of time.
It seems like the GOP is having buyers remorse with Vance. Let's not fall into the same trap.
by Anonymous | reply 484 | July 24, 2024 1:54 PM |
Eventually, it will be the person she feels most comfortable with. Perhaps, there's a bit of tension in the background of her not being so close to Bashear, but advisors suggesting him as the strongest political asset?
by Anonymous | reply 485 | July 24, 2024 1:58 PM |
It's notable, I think, that it seems like Bashear and Walz are the ones who have been all over the media since Sunday. Which is why I thought it was odd that when they first dropped the list of people they were vetting, Basher wasn't on it.

by Anonymous | reply 490 | July 24, 2024 2:16 PM |
The Republicans are have a bad time.
The only media play they're getting is retooling against a new opponent, scolding the rednecks about DEI hire quotes, and Vance: in or out and how bad was the childless comment?
Not a good stretch for a campaign that practically should have been ready to go after Harris of all people - the playbook should already be written. Even if they retool, they should be out there using the messages as if she was only Veep.
I mean, it's great, obviously, but a bit of an exposure as to how little is actually on offer from this candidate and his bottom of the barrel team.

That’s also probably why it won’t be Cooper, who’s even older.
Kelly was also born the same year as Walz and Harris (and is actually the eldest of the three), but he reads as more youthful. The rest are in their 40s and 50s.

If Tay Tay endorses Kamala, it will be a Reagan-esque landslide. I just had a conversation the other day with a Swiftie and it was like talking to a cult member. She went on and on about how wonderful Taylor Swift was and that she has spent thousands of dollars on tickets. If Tay Tay says to vote for Kamala, they absolutely will do it. She needs to do it soon so that they can get their asses registered in time.

The community notes on the tweet point out the lie:
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Axios previously reported on April 14 & March 24, 2021 that Kamala Harris was appointed as Border Czar:

by Anonymous | reply 542 | July 26, 2024 5:20 AM |
R542 is right. The only way they can replace Vance is if Vance resigns. That’s what occurred in 1972, Eagleton had no intention of quitting but was “persuaded” to resign for the good of the campaign. Sadly, it didn’t help McGovern at all.
This is the most likely scenario, if Dump has buyers’ regret. They will “persuade” Vance to resign. And just like Eagleton, it won’t do them a lick of good.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | July 26, 2024 12:15 PM |
Again I ask: how exactly does Trump ditch him? Change the rules, and if Vance doesn't like it - tough? Say privately to him "I made a mistake, quit or I'll disown you!"?
by Anonymous | reply 544 | July 26, 2024 12:30 PM |
r544 Why on earth would Vance talk back to Trump in that scenario? Of course he'd go along with it, he's a fucking nobody.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | July 26, 2024 12:33 PM |
R544, it happens as you say: Dump privately persuades him to resign. Although Repukes have no morals, if Vance refuses I can see Dump working to change the party rules to remove Vance. But that would be messy and might take time. The easiest path is for Dump to make Vance an offer he can’t refuse.

I adore Mighty Joe, but I was wary and had misgivings when he announced a couple of years ago he was running again.
And let me throw this in, too. Because Pelosi has been so effective at wielding power, we think she's somehow excluded from regret and pain.
I think she hated to, and was in pain at what she knew had to be done to oust her old buddy Joe. That had to hurt just from a human standpoint.

Nancy Pelosi is the best Speaker of my lifetime, and up there with the rest from history. In a very real sense, I consider her the House counterpart to the whole Master of the Senate thing that LBJ had.
If/when Kamala Harris walks into the White House as President in January. it won't be because America is finally "ready" for a female President. It's because Nancy Pelosi read the tea leaves and did what what had to be done. If Nancy was a man, we'd just accept that without needing to justify it.
