“ Parts of Lydia remind Ryder of a younger version of herself. “In my 30s, I had two disastrous relationships that were—they weren’t wrong, but this was before you would ever think to Google someone,” she says. “When I look back, I’m like, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’ ”
Who are these two?

What is responsible for the absolutely batshit crazy bunny-boiler eyes that just seemed to show up one day out of nowhere? They definitely weren't always there. It seems now like she can't take a single photo without looking like Ramona Singer walking the runway.
Is it a botched eye job or what?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 21, 2024 5:15 AM |
What is up with that body pose? It's like they were trying really hard to come up with a new one at an angle never seen before. Comes across like a parody of a celeb puff piece.

Kind of.
She got a raw deal but she was no angel. But the punishment did not fit the crime.
Far more did far worse for far less.
Her biggest problem was that she never aged. She was always 21 and looked 21 and, eventually, you have to resemble a grown up.
Even now it’s debatable.

By Hollywood standards she didn't do anything too egregious to anyone. Always professional and friendly with costars. her one professional blemish is dropping out of Godfather 3 a couple of weeks before shooting but she really had to be worn down at time. It's Sofia Coppola's assault on on film that even makes it all that bad.

R31 she dated Matt Damon from 1998 to 2000. She got caught shoplifting in 2001. Coincidence? I think not. Dating that closet case would drive anyone over the edge.

I *adored* 90's Winona like everyone else.
But I think she's been..um...unstable for decades now and I don't get the sense she's gotten much better. The weirdo poses and crazy eyes just add to my suspicion. She now seems to vacillate (like lots of mentally ill people) between nuts and numb- medicated. I was intrigued when she was cast in Stranger Things but I when I watched her, I felt it was lifeless, phoned in performance compared to her early work. I'd bet money she needs to stay on her meds to be insurable.....but the performances suffer. Her personality has always been sort of juvenile.....and youth really suited her. Middle age just doesn't seem to be her bag.
I know a lot of people say she never got over Johnny and I'm sure that's in there....but Angelina Jolie should get an honorable mention for stealing her thunder (and never really giving it back) in "Girl, Interrupted."

Living above your means while socializing with trust-fund nepo babies and struggling to maintain the facade of great success and wealth during a lull in your career.
I don’t feel sorry for celebrities but she got a raw deal. People in their 20s are typically idiots and in that business it has to be compounded exponentially.
Considering she was indeed a child star, she’s lucky to be alive.
Good for her having a resurgence.

It was obviously acting out. Someone who is worth millions and millions of dollars stealing like 4 thousand dollars worth of clothes doesn't make a malicious criminal. With the right script, co-stars and director Winona is effortless. But she needs those to come alive.
Teenage performances: Heathers, Beetlejuice, Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands
20s performances: Dracula, Age Of Innocence, Little Women, The Crucible, Girl Interrupted,
30s performances: Black Swan
40s performances: Stranger Things, The Plot Against America

by Anonymous | reply 63 | July 21, 2024 1:06 PM |
She was indeed high or in the midst of some kind of weird episode during the Stranger Things awards show. I think Christina Ricci was doing press for something around that time and was asked about it (maybe by Andy Cohen on WWHL) and she shut it down immeadiately and got very protective of Winona- pretty pissed on her behalf. She made it clear that she couldn't say much....but the implication was that CR thought everyone was a jerk for laughing at Winona in the same way you'd be a jerk for making fun of, say, special needs kids. It was a very 'she-can't-help-it' vibe.

R67 Most tween/teen girls seem to have an inexplicable brief shoplifting phase--usually between 13-15. I have a ton of sisters and each of them as well as my junior high gal pals had one summer where they'd maniacally lift all kinds of little nonsense things like cheap jewelry from Clair's or makeup or hair clips. It would start off with one or two things then by the end of the summer they'd be coming home from the mall with hundreds of dollars worth of shit and drunk with power. Either they'd get scared straight by one of their friends getting caught or they'd just grow out of it, but they all eventually stopped.
I'm not sure what it is--maybe it's just a rebellion thing but it seems like a kind of adolescent rite of passage for girls.
However, shoplifting unnecessarily as an adult tends to be associated with Borderline Personality, which makes sense because Borderline adults basically stop psychologically maturing between 13-16. Shoplifting, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, arrested development....who does that sound like?

She was huge in the late 80s through the late 90s, but I never felt there was a film that she was truly stellar in, warranting all of the things she was put in. R31 R55 Shoplifting very frequently has nothing to do with the ability to afford the items. Some people are thrill-seeking. Some people want to "stick it to the man." Some people use shoplifting like a drug to get dopamine hits. Sort of like gamblers or sex addicts. Some people use it as an escape from internal turmoil, inner emptiness. The void. They want to FEEL something, anything. Similar to any addict. It's a more extreme version of going on an impulsive shopping spree after your boyfriend dumps you. Acquiring new "stuff" gives an instant, although fleeting, lift in spirits. New clothes, new you, etc. Take it one step further and you have your shoplifter, who feels a [temporary] rush of happiness and excitement from acquiring new items. Problem is, that rush is so fleeting, it has to be repeated, like all addictions do, over and over again. And the addict must take bigger hits, or risks, to get the same buzz. Eventually you ARE going to get busted.
